SPONGE HOLDER OR HANDLE.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 363,674, dated May 24, 1887.

To all whom it may concern.-

Be it known that I, WALTER P. PINEL, of Quincy, in the county of Norfolk and State of Massachusetts, haveinvented certain new and useful Improvements in Sponge Holders or Handles, of which the followingis a full, clear, and exact description. A

This invention relates to a holder or handle for a sponge or other absorbent material which it is desired to saturate with water or other liquid. Its object is to enable the sponge, after having been saturated with the liquid desired, to be compressed or squeezed to relieve it of the surplus of such saturation, or, in other words, to make it most suitable for use with- 'out requiring the hands to be brought in contact with it.

This sponge-holder, or handle, as it may be conveniently termed, meaning, however, to embrace any and all absorbent materials to which it is applicable, is composed of a stem, to one end of which the sponge is attached, and of a shell which is carried by said stem and shaped, as said stem is drawn through it in one direction, to compress the sponge, and in the other direction to expose the sponge for use, all substantially as hereinafter described.

In the drawings, A is a piece of sponge suitably attached and secured to one end of a stem or rod, B, and O is a shell, of preferably conical shape interiorly, placed upon said stem. The stem is free to be moved lengthwise through the shell 0, and when drawn in one direction to draw the sponge into the shell and in the other direction to project the sponge beyond the shell, in the first case securing a compres sion or squeezing of the sponge and in the second case a placing of it in position to be Serial No. 225,417. (No model.)

A sponge holder or handle such as described I obviously is most useful and serviceable for various purposes-as, for instance, for sponges to be used by scholars in school and for washing surfaces of various kinds, carriages, windows, &c.and in all cases it is plain the sponge can be compressed or squeezed, as may be desired, without contact with the hands.

In lieu of a sponge, cotton waste or other absorbent material may be used, and it is not intended to limit the invention in that regard. Having thus described my invention, what Iclaim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent,

A handle or holder for a sponge or other absorbent material, composed of a stem, to one end of which the absorbent material is secured, and of a shell through which said stem is arranged to be moved to draw said absorbent materialinto the she1l,and thereby to compress I or squeeze it and to place or expose said absorbent material for use, substantially as de scribed, for the purposes specified.
