DAVID HENRY J ACOARD, OF SAIQ FRANCISCO, CALIFORNIA.
CIGAR-BOX.
EPECIPICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 363,467, dated May 24, 1887.
Application filed April 9, 1886.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, DAVID HENRY J AOOARD, a citizen of the United States, residing in the city and county of San Francisco, and State of California, have invented a new and useful In1- provement in Surprise Cigar-Boxes, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in surprise cigar-boxes; and it consists in a certain device for the attachment of a musical instrument to a cigar-box, so as to play a tune or tunes when the lid is opened. It will be understood by referring to the accompanying drawings.
Figure 1 is a perspective view with the front of the box broken out to show the construction of the same and the position of the musical instrument. Fig. 2 is a plan view showing the lid thrown back and the false bottom broken out for the purpose of showing the position of the musical instrument; and Fig. 3 is'a perspective view showing the front, the ends, and the top broken away to show the operation of the device more clearly.
The following is the construction of the invention:
I construct the cigar-box A in the usual form, and place the partition B so as to conceal the musical instrument and leave the appearance of the intcrior similar to that of an or dinary cigar-box. I place the. well-known music-box instrument as shown by the cylinder marked 0 and the stop-lever G. I form the connecting-rod D with the incline Eat the bottom, and passing the same through the false bottom B at the guide-opening H. I attach the same so as to pass up close to the back of the Serial X0. 198,339. (No model.)
box, and attach to thelid with a joint that will allow the lid to open, as shown in Fig. 1. When the rod D is drawn up, it operates the music-lever G by means ofthe incline E, throwing the said lever G out of contact with the cylinder 0 and allowing the same to operate in the usual way. When a tune is played, the lever falls into a notch or hole in the cylinder, as is common in the well-known music-box construction. It is operated by the spring 8, (shown in Fig. 2,) which is attached to the said lever and serves to hold the same in contact with the incline E.
The object of my invention is to afford a pleasant surprise when the box is opened by immediately playing a tune or more, as long as the box is opened and the lever G held back by the cam .01 incline E, until the instrument runs down, when it is wound up in ordinary way of winding a music'box. It is also asubject of attraction, adapted to the use of those selling cigars as affording an extra attraction.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent,
The combination, with a box, ofamusical in strument located therein, a stop-lever, G, arranged to engage the cscapement-wheel of the musical instrument, a rod, D, having a flexible connection with the lid of the box and provided with an incline to engage the lever G, and the spring 3, secured to the lever G.
