PORTABLE FIRE. PLACE AND FLU E.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 363,210, dated May 17, 1887.
Application filed June 22, 1885. Serial No. 169,386. (No model.)
My invention relates to'improvemenis in portable fire places and fines, the object of which is to provide a cheap, simple, and durable device for burning wood or coal to heat a room. These objects I attain by means of the device illustrated in the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification,
in whieh- Figure 1 is a perspective view of the entire device. Fig. 2 is a section on the line m 00 of Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a section on the line y y of Fig. 1. Fig. etis a modification showing the frame for a double fire-place and chimney.
D is a box of any desired shape and size. It may be made of wood or other desired material, and has a back, cl, with sides d (1 whith rest upon a suitable foundation, 0, which may be made of stone or brick.
d d are cross-bars, made of iron or other suitable material, which are preferably set in mortises in the upper, front, and back edges of the side pitces, (1" d A is a fire-box composed of sheet metal, preferably in one piece, having a back, a, curving forward and upward, and sides a a", flaring outward from the back and provided with flanges a a which are provided with holes a and a This box 'is made so as to leave aIspace, E, between the box D and the sides and back of the fire-box to be filled with dirt or other suitable material. The box A rests on the foundation (1.. Its top is formed of the horizontal cross-pieces 61* (P, the former extending from the back edge and spaced apart to leave the opening 1) into the fine.
N is a hearth, also made of sheet metal, and is provided with catches 0 0, which are made to enter the openings a a, so that it may be turned up against the flanges a a.
P P are hooks attached to the fire-box A may be made smaller as it ascends, the parts being secured to each other by means of strips of metal I bolted or riveted above and below the joint.
Fig. 4 is a modification for a double firebox, one set in at each side. The space between, as in the single fire-place, is filled with earth or other desired material, the fines being separated by a partition resting on the middle crosspiecc, Q.
Thus I have a cheap and simple fire-place that can be easily moved, and one that is safe and durable.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Let ters Patent, is-
1. The box D, comprising a bottom, 0, vertical side and back walls, open front walls, a a, horizontal top pieces, (1 (2 leaving an opening, 1), partition a, forming the filled space E, and the back of the fire-chamber and the chimney, substantially as set forth.
2. The withindeseribed portable fireplace, comprising the flue B, box D, consisting of a bottom, 0, vertical side and back walls, and open front Walls, a a", pierced with openings (0 a horizontal top pieces, (1* (1 leaving an opening, I), partition a, forming the filled space E, and the fireback, the catches o 0, and the movable hearth N, to which said catches are secured, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I afiix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
