2 inlllll m SUMMARY OF THE INVENTION Decanters presently in use and which have been heretofore known, include, among other things, a lid assembly which requires considerable labor in assembling or disassembling the lid with respect to the collar embracing the neck of the decanter bowl. Our invention has for its principal object the provision of a simplified arrangement for attaching the lid to the collar assembly.
The invention will be best understood by reference to the accompanying drawings, in which:
FIG. 1 is a fragmentary perspective view of a decanter having our improved lid assembly associated therewith;
FIG. 2 is a plan view of the same;
FIG. 3 is a fragmentary sectional detail view taken substantially on line 3-3 of FIG. 2;
FIG. 4 is a perspective view of the lid and hinge bar embodied in the invention;
FIG. 5 is a perspective view of the handle embodied in the invention;
FIG. 6 is a fragmentary sectional detail view taken substantially on line 6-6 of FIG. 3.
The preferred form of construction as shown in the drawings includes a decanter bowl 10 which is customarily made from clear heat-proof glass. This decanter includes a neck 11, on the upper peripheral edge 12 of which is a sealing ring 13 formed substantially channel-shaped in cross section to provide an outside depending apron 14 and an inside apron 15 between which is embraced the peripheral edge portion 12 of the neck 1 1.
Embracing the neck 11 is the collar 16 of a pouring spout 17 having a pouring lip 18 integral therewith. The collar 16 has a vertically extending slit 19 which extends partially but not completely through the collar 16 and which slit permits the collar 16 to be compressed about the neck 11, with the sealing ring 13 in sealing position with respect to the peripheral edge portion 12.
Formed integrally with the collar 16 on opposite sides of the slit 19, are parallelly extending arms 20 and 21. Between these arms 20 and 21 is located the shank 22 of a handle 23. The opposite vertical walls 24 of the shank 22 are undercut so as to provide spaced flanges 25 and the shoulder 25' which, when the shank 22 is fitted between the arms 20 and 21 overlie and abut, respectively, the edges 26 of the arms, thereby providing a firm antitiliing connection between the handle 23 and the arms 20 and 21 of the collar 16.
The pouring spout 17 has a central opening 27 which is normally closed by a lid 28. This lid 28 has an upward extension 29 which is V-shaped in cross section, with the outer leg 30 of the extension provided with an opening 31. The wall 32 of the leg 30 is slightly beveled for reasons hereinafter made apparent. A hinge plate 33 is provided, at one end of which is formed an open hook 34 which is hooked to the leg 30 by inserting the hook 34 into the opening 31. The provision of the bevel 32 facilitates the insertion of the open end of the hook 34 into the opening 31, the leg 30 being trapped in the hook 34 by the edge portion 31 ofthe spout 17 (see FIG. 3).
The plate 33 is substantially rectangular in plan view and provides at a point below the hook 34 a projection 35 which cooperates with a flange 36 to receive therebetween the shank 22 of the handle 23 so that when the hook 34 is hooked to the lid 28 by projecting the same through the opening 31, and the shank 22 is inserted between the arms 20 and 21, the projection 35 will be disposed above the shank 22, while the flange 36 will be located beneath the shank, thereby providing a connection between the hinge plate 33 and the collar 16 to pivotally support the lid 28 with respect to the opening 27.
While any form of bolt connection, including a rivet, wing bolt, or the like, may be employed to rigidly connect the handle 23 and collar 16, in the form shown the shank 22 is connected to arms 20 and 21 by inserting into a substantially square openin 37 formed in ann 21, the head 38 of a threaded socke 39, the head 38 being square and fitting rnto the opening 37 as well as a square counterbore 40 formed in the shank 22. Inserted in an opening 41 formed in the arm 20 is a threaded bolt 42 which threads as at 43 into the socket 39, the head of the bolt 42 being thereafter swaged as at 44 upon the arm 20, thus to complete a rigid connection between the handle 23 and the collar 16.
A lifting lug 45 which facilitates manually pivoting the lid 28 from the forward end thereof may be provided, if desired. This lug 45 may also serve as a weight for pivoting the lid 28 into closed position with respect to the pouring spout. However, by placing a finger upon the extension 29, the lid 28 may be effectively pivoted during the pouring or filling operation of the decanter.
From the foregoing description, it is apparent that we provide a novel, simple, and inexpensive arrangement for attaching the lid to the pouring spout of a decanter, thus facilitating assembly.
While we have illustrated and described the preferred form of construction for carrying our invention into effect, this is capable of variation and modification without departing from the spirit of the invention. We, therefore, do not wish to be limited to the precise details of construction set forth, but desire to avail ourselves of such variations and modifications as come within the scope of the appended claims.
Having thus described our invention, what we claim as new and desire to protect by Letters Patent is:
1. An improvement in a lid assembly for the pouring spout of a decanter in which the pouring spout includes a neck, an opening, and a lid for removably closing the opening, the improvement comprising a. a hinge plate b. means for providing a hinged connection between one end of the plate and the lid,
c. means extending from the neck of the pouring spout laterally in parallel spaced relation with respect to each other,
d. a handle having a shank positioned between said lastnamed means,
e. lateral extension means provided by the hinge plate in spaced relation with respect to each other to receive therebetween an end portion of the shank of said handle,
f. and a bolt connection between said means extending from the neck of the pouring spout, and said shank.
2. The improvement in a lid assembly for the pouring spout of a decanter as defined in claim 1, wherein the means providing the hinged connection between the hinge plate and the lid comprises a hook provided at one end of the hinge plate, and an extension provided by the lid and having an opening formed therein to receive the hook.
