UNITED TATES FFICE ATENT BOX-TASTENER.
SPECIPICATION forniing part o1 Letters Patent N0. 362.831, dated May 10, 1887.
Application filed lIo.rch 5, 1887. Serial N0. 229,757.
T0 all w7wm z't may concern:
Be it known that I, AUGUST H. GAERTNER, of St. Louis. Missouri, have made a. new and useful Improvement in Box Fasteners, of which the following is a. full, clear, and exact deseription.
The improvernent relates 130 the special means for fastening the cover to the body of the box, substantially as is hereinafter deseribed and claimed, and illustruted in the annexed drawings, making parb ofthis speoification, in which Figure l is a view in perspective of a box in whioh the improvemenb is embodiecl. Fig. 2 is a view in perspectiveupon a smaller soale, of the box, t-he oover being unlooked and raised. Fig. 3 is a horizontal secbion 011 the line 3 3 of Fig. 4 one ofthe lockinglevers heilig unlooked; and Fig. 4 is an end elevation of the box.
The same lebtersof reference denotethe same parts.
A represents lshe body of the box, and B represents the eover. Their eonstruotion is such as now in use. saving as it is1modified by the improvemenbin question. The oover ab euch encl is provided with adownwardlyprojecting flange, b. which is slol;ted ab b 10 I6 eeive what may be bermed a. looking-lever, O. This last-narned parb is pivoted ab 0 to enable it to be turned to and fro, as indicated in the various figures ofthe drawings. W'hen closed into the flange b, it fills the slot b therein, substantially as is represented in Figs. l, 3, and there is no projection of any signifieance beyond the faoe of the coverflange. Upon its inner side l3h6 lever is provided with a block, c, whieh, when the lever is closed into the cover-flange, enters an opening, a, in t-he box-body, by which means the Cover beeomes fastened to the box body. In
practioe the block c can be the piece removed from the box-body in forming the opening a. The block c is in Ehe plane horizontally of the lever, which enables the opening a and block c 150 be eovered and proteeted when the cover is locked, so that the box is less likely 130 become unlocked aecidenbally.
A cleat, D, is attaehed to the box-body just below the cover-flange t0 provide means for- (N0 model.)
lifting the inclosed boxbody withou straining the locking-lever. \Vhen the cover is removed from oho body. the openings aa may serve as hundles in lifbing the box-body.
In is imporbant t0 secure the locking-lever wheu it is closed into theoover-flange, so that in shall n0t; accidenbully be swung out bherefrom. T0 Lhis end the cover-flange has a clip, E. pivoted in in ab eand capable of boing burned around, as indioated hy its two positions shown in Fig. 3. in whieh view the lockinglever ab bhe lefnhand encl is released from bhe olip and opened out, and ab bhe opposifie end 0f Ehe boxthe loeking-lever is closed a.nd also secured by means of the elip. The lever is notehed an 0 to pass around the olip-wire when e'losed, und lt is notohed ab c to receive Ehe outer end of the Clip when the olip is swung around over the lever end, as shown more (listinetly in Fig. l. An additional means f01 securiug the lever O is notehing its outer end horizontally ab c, so tha.t the parts above and beneabh l3he notch 02m be sprung towarcl euch otherand narrowing Ehe sich b ab Zf where the notched lever end enters it, so that wheu Lhe lever is elosed it; becomes hold Wibh suffieient friction in theslot ba.ncl thereby prevented from aoeidentally swinging open.
Either the clip E01 the lasb-described deviee (the slihlever and narrowed slot) can be employed singly, or bhey can, as shown, be used in conjunction.
I claim 1. The combination of the boxbody having Ehe openings a, the box-cover having the S101;- ted flanges, the pivoted locking-levers provided wih the block, und the olips, substantinlly as desoribed.
2. The eombiuabiou ofthe box-body having theopenings a, the boxcover having the S101;- ted (langes, the locking-levers having the block, 21!1d the pivoted clips, said flange-slols heing narrowed (Lt theouter end, and said lever ends beiug slibted horizontally, subsbautially as deseribed.
AUG. H. GAERTNER.
