Be it known that we, Jxnns A. MrrcHELL and WILLIAM B. THOMAS, both residents of \Vestminster, in the county of Carroll and State of Maryland, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Bag- Fasteners; and we do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the invention,whieh will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specification, and in which- Figure 1 is a perspective view of the upper portion of a grainbag provided with our improved fastener. Fig. 2 is a similar View of the fastener detached, and Fig. 3 is a longitudinal sectional view of the same.

Similar numerals of reference indicate correspondingparts in all the figures.

Our invention has relation to that class of fasteners for grain-bags, bundles of straw, fodder, or similar articles where it is desired to hold two ends of a cord or rope passed around an article, in which the free end of the cord is held by a cam-lever or clamp; and it consists in theimproved construction and combination of parts of such a fastener, as hereinafter more fully described and claimed.

In the accompanying drawings, the numeral 1 indicates the body of the fastener, which is slightly curved and formed with perforations 2 and 3, one at each end.

The outer convex side of the body of the fastener is formed with a box, 4, having its outer side and one end open, and a cam-lever, 5, is pivoted upon a transverse pin or bolt, 6, in the open end of the box, and has the edge of its eccentric portion serrated, as shown at 7, and has a notch, 8, in the outer side of the arm 9. The outer end of the arm is formed with a perforation, 10, and the closed end of the box is provided with a perforation, 11, and the cord 12 has one end passed through the perforation in the body at the closed end of the box, and is secured by means of a knot, 13, while the free portion of the cord passes through the perforation at the other end of the body of the fastener, thence under the cam and through the perforation in the arm of the cam, and thence it is passed through the perforation in the closed end of the box.

The inner concave face of the body is provided with one or more lugs orpins, 14,which may be bent or riveted upon the inner side of the neck of the bag, thus securing the fastener to the bag; or the lug may merely project into the bundle around which the cord is carried.

It will be seen that if the free end of the cord becomes caught upon any object a pull upon the same in any direction will only serve to tighten the camlever against the cord, instead of tilting it open, which it would do if the cord were not passed through the perforation in the end of the box, and when it is desired to re lease the cord the arm of the cam may be pulled outward by catching into the notch in the outer side of the arm with the nail.

The strain of the article confined by the cord will serve to hold the cam closed, and the fastener will be retained upon the article upon which it is used by the lug or pin upon the concave side, which will either be secured in the bag when the fastener is used for a bag or which may enter the bundle upon which it is used for holding the fastener in place.

Although the fastener is principally intended for closing grain-bags and similar bags or sacks,where it will prevent cord from being lost and wasted, and where it will hold the bags or sacks firmly closed, it may also be used with advantage for binding and holding bundles of hay, straw, corn-fodder, or similar articles, the operation being alike in all cases.

Having thus described our invention, we claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States- 1. In a bag-fastener, the combination of a body having a perforation at each end and a box upon its outer side, said box being open at one end and provided with aperforation at the other, and a serrated cam-lever pivotally secured at the open end of the box, the arm of which is adapted to enter the outer portion of said box.

2. In a bagfastener, the combination of a body having a perforation at each end and a box upon its outer side, said box being open at one end and provided with an aperture at the other, and a serrated cam-lever pivotally secured at the open end of said box, the arm of which is provided with a perforation and adapted to enter the outer portion of the box.

8. In a bag-fastener, the combination of a curved body having a perforation at each end and a box upon its outer side, said box being open at one end and provided with an aperture at the other, and a cam-lever pivotally secured in'said box, the arm of which is adapted to enter said box.

4. In an bag-fastener, the combination of a body portion having a pin upon one side, a box upon the other, and a perforation at each end, the end of said box being perforated, and a cam-lever pivotally secured at the opposite end of said box.

5. In a bag-fastener, the combination of a body having an aperture at each end and a box upon its outer side, said box being open at one end and provided with an aperture at the other, a serrated cam-lever pivotally secured at the open end of said box, the arm of which is provided with a notch and a perforation, and a cord secured at one end in the per- 20 foration at one end of said body and passed through the perforation at the other end, under said earn-lever, through the perforation in the end of the arm of said lever, and out through the perforation in the end of the box. 2
