Description

(No Model.)
J. S. BROUGHTON.
COLUMN REST.
No. 362,716. Patented May 10,1887.
aha W 4 WI JV'ESSES NITE STATES ATE FFICE JOHN S. BROUGHTON, OF LEES SUMMIT, MISSOURI.
COLUMN-REST.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 362,716, dated May 10, 1887.
Application filed September 20, 1886. Serial No. 214,029.
To all whom, it may concern:
Be it known that I, J OHN S. BROUGHTON, of Lees Summit, in the county of Jackson and State of Missouri, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Column-Rests; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specification, and in which-- Figure 1 is a vertical sectional view of a column provided with my improved rest. Figs. 2 and 3 are perspective views of the two parts of the rest separated. Fig. 4 is a vertical sectional view of a column provided with a modified form of the rest; and Figs. 5 and 6 are perspective views of the two parts of this rest separated.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures.
My invention has relation to bases or rests for columns or posts for verandas, porches, and other portions of a building, where the end of a post rests upon the ground or a floor; and it consists in the improved construction and combination of parts of two plates or eastings secured, respectively, to the floor and to the end of the post, and formed, respectively, with a socket and a projection adapted to be fitted into and held in the socket, as hereinafter more fully described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings, the letter A indicates the fioor, and B is the post, and O and D are respectively the plate or casting secured to the floor and to the lower end of the post.
The plate or casting secured to the floor is formed with a cylindrical socket, E, projecting upward from the center of the casting and formed with a concave top plate, F, having a diametrical rectangular slot, G, in it; and the plate or casting secured to the post is provided with a central downwardly-projecting portion, H, having a convex face fitting upon the concave top plate and having a central downwardly-proj ecting lug, I, having a crosshead, J, at its end, which cross-head is of the same dimensions as the slot and may pass through the slot, bearing, after being turned upon the lug, with its end under the lips formed by the slotted top plate. It will thus be seen that the floor-plate may be first secured to the ground or floor and the other (No model.)
plate may be secured to the end of the post, whereupon the lug and the cross-head may be fitted into the slot in the top plate, the post being raised into a vertical position, and after turning the post one-fourth of a revolution the post will have its casting secured firmly in the casting upon the floor.
It will be seen that the plates or castings will prevent the wood in the lower end of the post from rotting by water or dampness from the floor, and the post will beheld firmly in position by the cross-head fitting in the slot, preventing the post from being drawn out of position by any upward strain.
In Figs. 4, 5, and 6 are shown views of a modified form of the rest, in which the slot in the top plate of the casting on the floor is formed at one end with an inwardly-project ing lip, K, under which the hooked end L of the lug upon the casting of the post may hook, the hook being engaged under the lip by first placing the post with the ing and hook resting in the slot and thereupon raising the post, forcing the hook in under the lip.
Having thus described my invention, I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States 1. In a rest for columns or posts, the combination of a plate to be secured to the floor, and formed with a socket having a top plate formed with a slot, with a plate or casting to be secured to the post, having a lug provided with a lip for engaging under the edge of the slot in the top plate of the socket, as and for the purpose shown and set forth.
2. In a rest for columns or posts, the combination of a plate to be secured to the floor and having a central socket formed with a concave top plate having a rectangular diametrical slot, with a plate or casting to be secured to the end of the column or post and formed with a central projecting portion having a convex end and a lug at the center of the face formed with a rectangular crosshead for engaging under the sides of the slotted top plate, as and for the purpose shown and set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I have hereunto affixed my signature in presence of two witnesses.
JOHN S. BROUGHTON.
