FIRE-ESCAPE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters PatentNo. 362,448, dated May 3, 1887.
Application filed February 10, 1887. Serial No. 227,146. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern..-
Be it known that I, HENRY M. JONES, a citizen of the United States, residing at New York, in the county and State of New York, have invented new and useful Improvements in Fire- Escapes, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in fire-escapes, as set forth in the following specification and claims, and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a perspective View, partly in section, of a iirc'escape. Fig. 2 is a detail perspective view of a fire-escape, showing an opened passage. Fig. 3 is an inverted plan View of portion of a passage with its door or cover.

The letter A indicates a platform or supportsuch, for example, as the floor of a room. Above the support A is shown a second platform or support, B. The support B may be the door of a room located above the firstnamed room with the floor A. A pole, rod, or bar, G, connects the platforms A B. The pole G is steadied and held by suitable meanssuch, for example, as afoot 0r socket, V, and an arm or brace, U. The pole 0 passes through a suitable passage or opening in the floor or platform B. When said passage is open, as seen in Fig. 2, a person can readily and rapidly glide along the pole C from the support B to the support A. Rapid escape from the support B can thus be had in case of emergency, such as fire.
The passage or opening for the pole C through the support B is adapted to be closed by a cover, door, or trap, D. Suitable connections or hinges, E, enable the cover to move to its closing position, as seen in Fig. 1, or to its open position, as seen in Fig. 2. To the coverD are hinged or movably connected wings or flaps G. When the wings G are in the position shown in Fig. 2, the cover D can be opened or closed, apassage being formed in the cover D for the pole G. A weight or spring, K, is adapted to raise or open the cover D. The weight K is connected by a rope or chain, H, to the cover D. Suitable guides or pulleys, I J, are provided for the rope or chain H. Theweight K, as seen in Fig. 1, is adapted to work in the pole O, the pole 0 being made hollow or provided with a channel or way for the weight K. The weight K is thus not apt to be tampered or interfered with, and said weight is removed out of the way and out of sight, so that the weight will not be a hinderance, and will not give an unsightly appearance to the building or room. \Vhen the'cover D is closed, the cover D rests in F, provided for the cover D. \Vhen the wings G are closed, saidwings close the passage in the cover D for the pole 0. To close said wings G automatically, I provide inclined surfaces or springs L, so placed that when the cover D is moved to its seat or ledge F the inclines L will cant or start the wings G toward their closing position, and on the com; plete closing of the cover D the wings G will close the channel or passage in the cover D, as seen in Fig. 1. By having springs L, as indicated, said springs L assist in starting the cover D to its open position. A bolt or bolts, N, engaging an eye or eyes, M, secured to the cover D, hold the cover D closed against the action of the weight K.
The bolts N can be opened by a suitable eye or handle, S, connected to the rope or chain R, which leads from the handle S to the bellcrank levers P O, swinging about pivots Q. The bell-cranks P O are connected to the bolts N, and when the rope or ropes R are drawn in the direction of arrow 1, Fig. 3, the bell-cranks P O draw the bolts N out of engagement with the cover D and allow the weight or spring K to open the cover D. Springs X tend to throw the bolts N into engagement with the cover D. In Fig. 3 one of the boltsN is removed.
The bolts N may have suitable suitably secured-as, for example, or rim F. The bolts N may communicate with a handle,'S, near the floor B, or with a handle near some other floor-as, for example, the handle T near the floor A. The handles S T should be so placed as to be readily accessible. From the-floor A may lead another pole C to to the next floor below in the same manner in which the pole 0 leads from the floor B to the floor A. The covers D on the various floors, A B, can be connected so as to be simultaneously opened, if desired.
hat I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-- guides, IV,
to the ledge 1 1. The combination, with a pole or rod, 0, and platforms A B, one of which is provided with a passage for said pole O, of a cover, D, for closing said passage, and aweight or spring, K, adapted to open the cover D, said pole or rod 0 being provided with a chamber or passage for the reception of the spring or weight K, substantially as set forth.
2. The combination, with a pole or rod, 0, and platforms A B, one of which is provided with a passage for said pole C, of a cover, D, forelosing said passage, said cover D being provided with a channel for the pole O, and with wings G, for closing said channel in the cover D, a ledge or rest, F, for the cover D, inclines or springs L, for closing the wings G, and a spring or weight, K, for opening the cover D, said pole or rod 0 being provided with a chamber or passage for the reception of the spring or weight K, substantially as set forth.
3. The combination, with a pole or rod, G, and platforms A B, one of which is provided with a passage for said pole C, of a cover, D, for closing said passage, a bolt or looking de- .vice, N, adapted to engage the cover D, and
a spring or weight, K, for opening the cover D, said pole or rod 0 being provided with a chamber or passage for the reception of the spring or weight K, substantially as set forth.
4. The combination, with a pole or rod, 0, and platforms A 13, one of which is provided with a passage for said pole C, of a cover, D, for closing said passage, said cover D being provided with a channel for the pole C, and with wings G, for closing said channel in the cover 1), a ledge or rest, F, for the cover D, and inclines or springs for automatically clos ing the wings G, substantially as set forth.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand and seal in the presence of two sub scribing witnesses.
