.To all whom it may concern.-

Be it known that I, ROBERT H. TABER, of Fairhaven, in the county of Bristol and State of Massachusetts, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Lanterns, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.

The improved lantern of this invention, in V substance, is composed of a base-plate cen- IO trally adapted-as, for instance, with an up right pointed prong-4'01 a candle to be affixed to it, and provided with an upward-projecting circular running flange interiorlyprovided with vertical grooves or depressions and horizontal ledges, in combination with a glass or other transparent chimney fitting Within said vertical flange and resting on said ledges, a holder to surround and steady the chimney at its upper portion and arranged to be moved up and down on suitable stationary vertical guides of the lantern, a cap or deflector setting over the top of the chimney and carried in common with 'said-chimney-holder, and a handle, all substantially as .hereinafter described.

In the drawings, A is the base--plate,stamped or struck up from sheet metal, or cast or otherwise suitably made, but preferably stamped or struck up.

B is a vertical prong, secured at the center of base-plate A and pointed at its upper end.

N is a cap,located above the top of the chimney and carried by the slidetubes K of the 7c, chimney-steadying ring H. This cap N acts as a fender to the heat from the flame of the burning candle of the lantern, and above it is a cross-piece, 0, also attached to the sliding tubes K, and acting as a guard to the hand to prevent its contact with the fender-cap N. The fender-cap preferably is struck up or stamped out of sheet metal, and its under side, P, or side toward the chimney-top, is concave. The chimney steadying or holder ring H, fender-cap N, and cross-guard Qbeing, as described, attached to the slide-tubes K, movein common, and in the practical constructionof the lantern herein described the slide-tubesK are allowed sufficient vertical movement on the 8 5 guide-rods L of the base-plate to enable the parts carried by them to be placed in the desired'position, relative to the chimney-that is, so that the steadying-ring H can be'placed around the chimney sufficiently to act to hold 0 and steady it at the upper portion, and the fender N to protect the hand in which the lantern isearried from the direct heat of the burning candle of the lantern, and so that said The vertical passagesEof the vertical flange D, surrounding the lower end of the chimney, cooperating with the space under the chimney, between the ledges F,on which the chimney is placed and rests, secures the proper admission of air to promote and maintain combustion of the candle, and at the same time avoids the liability of extinguishing of the flame of the burning candle from sudden gusts of wind and other causes.

The interior vertical grooves, J,of the chimney holding and steadying band H promote circulation of air between the chimney and said band, and thus the heating of the chimney is to a great and practical degree prevented.

The tubeslidcs K for the chimney-holding ring H and fendercap N to the chimney are prefe "ably provided with handle-pieces Q on their outer sides for convenience in handling the same to slide said parts up and down.

The lantern herein described is most compact, simple, efficient, and useful, as well as most inexpensive, and it affords a most handy, convenient, desirable, and practical lantern and one safe against fire, should it be accidentally dropped or upset or its chimney broken.

Having thus described my invention, wha I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-- 1. A lantern composed of a base-plate, A, to which a candle is to be attached, vertical rods L, a circular vertical band, D, having inside vertical air-circulating ways, E, and ledges F, a chimney, G, fitting within said band and resting on said ledges, and a holding or steadying ring, H, for the upper portion of thechimney, arranged to vertically slide on said rods L, substantially as described, for the purpose specified.

A lantern composed of a base-plate, A, to which a handle is to be attached, vertical rods L, a circular vertical band, D, having inside vertical air-circulating ways, E, and ledges F, a chimney, G, fitting within said band and resting on said ledges, and a holding or stead ying band, H, for theupper portion of the chimney, having interior vertical air-circulating ways, J, and arranged to vertically slide on said rods, substantially as described, for the purpose specified.

8. A lantern composed of a base-plate, A, to which a candle is to be attached, vertical rods L, a circular vertical band, D, having inside vertical air-circulating ways, E, and ledges F, a chimney, G, fitting within said band and resting on said ledges, a holding or steadying band, H, for and surrounding the upper portion of the chimney, and a cap or fender, N, both arranged to vertically slide on said rods L, substantially as described, for the purpose specified.

A lantern composed of a base-plate, A, to which a candle is to be attached, vertical rods L, a circular vertical band, D, having inside vertical air-circulating ways, E, and ledges F, in combination with achimney, G, fitting with in said band and resting on said ledges, aholding or steadying band, II, for and surrounding the upper portion of the chimney, and a cap or fender, N, both arranged to vertically slide and as one on said rods L, and havingacrosspiece, 0, to be used as a handle, substantially as described, for the purpose specified.

5. In a lantern composed of a base-plate, A, to which a candle is to be attached,vertical rods L, a circular vertical band, D, havinginside vertical air-circulating Ways, E, ledges F, and a chimney, G, resting on said ledges and fitting within said band, a holding or steadying band, H, for the upperportion of said chimney, and fendercap N, over the top of the chimney, and both attached to common slidetubcs K, moving on said rods L, and having a ci'osspiece, M, making a handle, and a crosspiece, Q, attached to said tubes, making a guard for the hand grasping the handle M against contact with the fender or cap N, substantially as described, for the purpose specified.
