UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
EDWVIN S. CARPENTER, OF CORINTH, VERMONT.
BREECHING FOR HARNESS.
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, EDWIN S. CARPENTER, of Corinth, in the county of Orange and State of Vermont, have invented a new and Improved Breeching for Harness, of which the following is a full, clear, andexact description.
The object of my invention is to provide a harness-breeehing adapted for such location upon the horse that it will not interfere with the free and natural movement of his limbs, nor cause him to interfere nor impede his speed, as do ordinary breechings, but, on the contrary, will assist the horse forward and increase his speed, especially in case the driver exerts more force in holding the lines than is required to draw the vehicle, and if the horse is inclined to interfere with the ordinary breeching on this will prevent it, and if a holdhack iron or strap or one side of the breeching should break, the breeching could not pull around and let the vehicle onto the horse, but will hold it back and prevent accidents.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specification, in which similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in both the figures.
Figure l is a perspective view of my new breeching, crupper, back, hip, and holdback straps; and Fig. 2 shows the harness as it ap pears when placed upon a horse.
The invention will first be described in connection with the drawings, and then pointed out in the claim.
The breeching A is held high upon the buttocks of the horse, at or above the portions thereof that have any alternate backward movement in the locomotion of the horse. I prefer to hold the breeching in this position by attaching the same to the crupper B by a dated May 3,1887.
(No model.)
short tap or strap, C. The crupper may other wise be of the ordinary construction, and made a part of or attached to the back-strap D by buckles. The extremities of the breeching are provided with the rings (1 d, to which the holdback 1 straps E are attached, and the breeching is provided with a rumpstrap instead of hip-strap, (as in the ordinary harness), called the safety-strap, which strap passes through the back-strap D at or about the junction of the crupper B, and such strap is provided with billets and buckles.
By elevating the breeching high upon the buttock of the horse,it in no manner interferes with the movement of the hind legs, does not cause him to interfere, nor impede his speed,
and in case there is a forward pressure of the vehicle upon the horse, caused by the driver holding upon the lines, this pressure does not retard the limbs, but assists the horse forward and increases his speed, and if the horse is inclined to interfere with the ordinary breeehing on this will prevent it, and if a holdback iron or strap on one side of the breeching should break, the said rump-strap, called the safety-strap, and the tab 0 will p reventany accident by the vehicle comingonto the horse, for the breeching cannot pull round.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The crupper B, provided with a tab or fastcning device, C, breeching attached to the tab C, substantially as described.
