STRAINER FOR CULINARY VESSELSQ SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 362,097, dated May 3, 1887.
Application filed May 7, 1886.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, J OSEPH M. LEwIs, a citizen of the United States, residing at Trenton, in the county of Mercer and State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Strainers for Culinary Vessels; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to letters or figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.

My invention relates to strainers for culinary purposes; and it consists in the construction and novel combination of parts, as hereinafter described, and pointed out in the claims.
Referring by letter to the accompanying drawings, A designates a sheet-metal body or drum, which is formed from a single band, B, of sheet metal,lhaving both of its longitudinal edges wired to give it the requisite strength along these parts. The body A of the drum is provided with elongated circumferential slots 0 0 near one end of the sheet A of metal. This slotted end D of the sheet B is overlapped by the other end, D, and threaded studs or rivets E, secured in the outer or overlapping end, D, pass through said slots C O, and the projecting threaded ends of the rivets E are A provided with nuts F, by which the expansible and contractible drum is held to its adjustments.
Just below its upper wired edge the body of the pot-lining is provided with two aligned slots, G G, through which one of the hooked ends of the bail H extends, so as not to interustment of the drum or body A fere with ad of the strainer. The other end of the bail is connected with an ear, I, at the opposite side of the pot-lining from the position occupied by the aligned slots G G.

tance of about one-half its height, is sometimes provided with perforations J; but for some purposes I make the pot-lining without this perforated peripheral portion.
On its inner periphery the potrlining is provided with vertical supports K K K, having through a horizontal slot, M just above the lower wired edge of the drum A, so that when the perforated bottom L is pushed down to place it will slip under said spring-catch M, and will be held in the vessel thereby until it is designedly removed therefrom.
The vertical supports K K K are provided at their upper ends, which are at about the middle of the height of the body A,with short inwardly-projecting shoulders N, upon which a second perforated diaphragm, P, rests when in place, and is designed to separate the articles resting on it from thoseresting on thelower perforated bottom, so that difierent kinds of articles may be separately cooked at one and the same time in the vessel. Near its lower end, on the outer side, the pot-lining Aisprovided with a hinged or pivoted hook, Q, which is connected to the lining by an ear, R, riveted to the outside of said lining, so that the hook may be turned out of the way when the lining is in place in the pot, and maybe turned out and hooked over the edge of the pot when it is desired to permit the lining to drain liquid into the pot and dry or steam the articles that have been cooked. This hook Q also serves as a hand-piece by which the lining may be tipped or turned to empty it of its contents,when necessary, after it has been lifted from the pot.
The perforated bottoms or diaphragms may be used both together, or either of them may be used singly, as necessity may require.
