J. T. HAMBAY.
BLANK FOR PIPE FITTINGS.
Patented Apr. 26, 1887.
INVENTOR,
BY W 1 ATTORNEY.
UNITE STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JAMES T. HAMBAY, OF PITTSBURG, PENNSYLVANIA.
BLANK FORPIPE-FITTINGS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters PatentNo. 362,003, dated April 26, 1887.
Application lile'd January28, 188G. Renewed March 31, 1887. Serial No. 238,201. (No model.)
To (4% whom it may concern.-
Be it known that 1, JAMES T. HAMBAY, residing at Pittsburg, in the county of Allegheny and State of Pennsylvania, a citizen of the United States, have invented or discovcred certain new and useful Improvementsin Blanks for Pipe-Fittings, of which improvements the following is a specification.
In the accompanying drawings, which make part of this specification, Figure 1 is a view in side elevation of a rollused in forming my improved blank, a portion of the roll being broken away to show the recessed groove therein. Fig. 2 is an end view of the roll. Fig. 3 is an edge view of a continuous strip of blanks produced by said roll. Figs. 4 and 5 are similar views of a single and double blank, respectively.
The invention herein relates to certain improvements in the form or shape of blanks to be used in the formation of fittings for pipes for the conveyance of fluids, and under the term fittings I include flange and screwcoupling, T's, crossings, 820. These fittings have generally heretofore been made by casting the same in suitably-formed molds. Inow propose to form such fittings of wrought-iron or steel, and thereby avoid certain defects inherent in or characteristic of articles formed by casting. These wrought-iron or steel fitting are formed, in part at least, by forming a collar or nozzle on the blank by what is known as a Hanging or nozzling operation. If this operation is effected on plates of uniform thickness, the walls of the collar or nozzle will taper from its point ofjunction with the body of the blank to the end of the nozzle, such taper being caused by the stretch of the metal during the flanging or nozzling operation; and, further, the walls of the nozzle will be sothin as to be dangerously weakened by threading, unless the blank used be of extra thickness,in
which case the body of the completed fitting around the nozzle or collar will be much thicker and heavier than necessary.
The object of the invention herein is to provide a blank so constructed and proportioned in its several parts that both the nozzle and body portion of the completed article shall be properly proportioned as to the thickness of their parts or the amount of metal therein;
and to this end my invention consists, generally stated, in a blank having the features or characteristics as hereinafter more fully described and claimed.
The blank, shown in Fig. 4, which can be made by rolling or forging, consists of what I term the body portion 1,0f athickness equal to that required inthe walls of the main portion of the fitting to be made, and of an enlargement of re-enforcement 2 at that point or portion of the blank .where the flanging is to be effected. This re-enforce is thickest in the center, where the greatest stretch or elongation of the metal occurs, and merges with a 'more or less abrupt inclination into the body portion of the blank, said body portion extending like a flange around the edges of the re-enforce or enlargement. The diameter or extent of the re-enforce and slope or taper thereof are dependent upon the size and length of the nozzle to be formed. by the fianging operation above referred to. The shape and width of the flange-like body portion 1 is dependent upon the kind and size of fitting to be made. In making fittings for two or more lateral branches for the main pipe a double or triple blank is used, and by double or triple blank I mean one having two or three enlargements or re-enforces thereon.
Although these blanks can be made in various ways, I prefer to form the same by rolling between suitably-shaped rolls, as shown in Fig. 1, in continuouslengths or strips, as shown in Fig. 3, and then. separating such strips into suitable length to form the blanks. One of the rolls to be used would be a plane, smoothsurfaced roll, the other roll being provided with a circumferential groove,3, in which are formed recesses 4, at suitable distances apart.
In order that the edges of the nozzles or collars to be formed on these blanks should be smooth and even, it is necessary that a hole, 5, (shown in dotted lines,) should be formed through the re-enforce-for the passage or entrance of the point of the flanging-tool, which will, during its onward movement in the flanging operation, enlarge or stretch such hole equally on all sides.
I claim herein as my invention 1. As a new article of manufacture, ablank for the manufacture of wrought-iron or steel fittings for pipes, having an enlargement or located with reference to the formation of a 10 re-enforce suitably proportioned and located nozzle or collar on said blank, substantially as with reference to the formation of a nozzle or set forth.
collar on said blank, substantially as set In testimony whereof I have hereunto set 5 forth. my hand.
2. Asa new article of manufacture, a blank J AMES T. HAMBAY. for the manufacture of Wrought-iron or steel XVitnesses: fittings for pipes, having a perforated enlarge- DARWIN S. \VOLOOTT,
