To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HENRY W. PLnIs'rER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Westfield, in the county of Union and State of New Jersey, have made certain new and useful Improvements in; Bolt Anchors, of which the following is a specification taken in connection with the accompanying drawings.
My invention relates to bolt anchors or expansion bolts, and more particularly to what is known in the trade as machine expansions.
My invention relates more particularly to forming the shell or shells of the expansion from rolled pressed steel of minimum thickness for the particular size expansion.
My invention further relates to using this pressed steel shell or shells in combination with the ordinary malleable iron nut and collar, or preferably in combination with a steel nut, or steel collar,'or both, my inven tion comprising any combination of these different elements as set forth in the claims.
My invention further relates to certain combinations, sub-combinations, articles of manfacture, and details of constructions all of which will be more fully hereinafter described and pointed out'in the claims.
In the drawings I have shown different embodiments of my invention but it is of course to be understood that my invention is not to be confined to the embodiments shown by way of illustration.

Expansion bolts and more particularly vertical section of a modified machine expansion bolts are now commonly made from castings of malleable iron. There are many objections, however, in manufacturing them in this manner.) The cost is relatively high for there are limits in the thinness of the walls that can be cast from malleable iron so that the resulting castmg is heavier than necessary in place where thickness is not required. Moreover in the ordinary manufacture of machine expansions formed of malleable iron castings, there is a large waste from warping of the castings, mis-runs, too thin castings, sand holes, blow-holes, rough surfaces, fins, and other deformatives. Also considerable grinding has to be done in removingsp'rews from i the malleable lron castings, all of which add greatly to the expense-of manufacture. By my invention I avoid all this waste and expense, obviate grinding and rejections or discards by forming a finished uniform product which can be turned out from the press without any further work except in connection with the pressed steel nuts, when used, which have to be screwthreaded. The resulting product by my method takes only the minimum amount of metal for the re-v expansion to be manufactured. This blank is fed through a punch press which punches out the arrow heads 3, 3 leaving arrow head recesses 14, 14, and cuts the units 4, 4 on the lines 5, 5 each blank forming the plurality of units. Preferably, though not necessarily,
the blank is provided during the rolling with the grooves 6', 6 to receive the split' spring rings 8, 8. The units 4, 4 are then fed to a forming die which will roll each unit into a semi-cylindrical shell 7, shown in Fig. 6. In the form of my invention as illustrated two of these shells 7 are employed and preferably, though not necessarily, secured together by means of the spring rings 8, 8. y i
The bevels 2, 2 form the inclined surfaces 2, 2 Within the interior of the shell 7 I may use any suitable means to expand the shells 7, 7 I may, for example, as shown in Figs. 1 and 2, employ a nut 9 of malleable iron and a malleable iron collar 10, each being provided with the arrow heads 11, 11.
- The work 121 to be supported is brought adjacent to the collar 10 and the machine bolt 12 is passed through the work, the unthreaded collar 10 and into the threaded nut 9. By turning the head 13 of the bolt 12 the malleable iron collar 10 and the malleablerecesses 14, 1 1, half of each arrow head recess being formed on each steel shell. When fully expanded the shells 7, 7 are parallel and the parts are as shown in Fig. 2. In this form of my invention I use, as previously noted, the pressed steel shells and the malleable iron nut and collar.
Preferably, however, I use with my pressed steel shells 7, 7 a pressed steel nut 15, Fig. 9, formed of steel tubing of the required diameter for the particular size expansion. One end is expanded, in any suit able manner, to form a frustum of a cone 16. The unexpanded portion 17 is provided with screw-threads to cooperate with the screwthreads on the nut 12. Preferably, though not necessarily, I provide my steel nut with lugs 18, 18 formed by cutting a portion of the unexpanded portion 17 of the nut and bending up the cut portion as shown in Fig. 9. These lugs 18, 18 cooperate with the arrow head slots 14;, 14 in the steel shells 7, 7.
' I may use in my expansion bolt the steel shells 7 7 with the steel nut 15 and the malleable iron collar 10; preferably I employ with the steel nut 15 a steel collar 19, Fig. 11, having the unexpanded portion 20, the expanded portion 21, and the lugs 22, 22 similar to the nut 15 except that it is not screw-threaded, so that the threads on the bolt 12 pass freely through it the same they do through the unthreaded malleable iron collar 10.
Having thus described this invention in connection with illustrative embodiments thereof, to the details of which I do not desire to be limited, what is claimed as new and what is desired to secure by Letters Patent is set forth in the appended claims.
lVhat I claim is 1. A new article of manufacture for an expansion bolt comprising a steel tubular nut expanded at one end to form a trust-um of a cone and provided with screw-threads and with a lug on its unexpanded portion.
2. A new article of manufacture for an expansion bolt comprising a steel tubular collar expanded at-one end to form a frustum of a cone and provided with a lug on its unexpanded portion.
