UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
'TIBERIAS DOUGHERTY, OF PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA.
ADVERTISING-CABINET.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 361,995, dated April 26, 1887'.
Application tiled May l5, 1886. Serial No. 202,949. (No model.)
To all whom, it may concern:
Be it known that I, TrBERrAs DOUGHERTY, a citizen of the United States, residing in the city and county of Philadelphia, State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Advertising-Cabinets, which improvement is fully set forth in the following specification and accompanyingdrawings, in vvhich- Figure 1 represents a front view of a cabinet embodying my invention. Fig. 2 represents a vertical section thereof.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in the two figures.
My invention consists of an advertisingcabinethavingdrums mounted within thesame, an advertising-apron .which is wound on and unwoundv from the drums, a calendar, and means for operating the drums and calendars, as will be hereinafter fully set forth.
Referring to the drawings, A represents a casing or cabinet, within which are mounted two rollers, B B', located horizontally, one below the other. Connected with the rollers is an apron, C, on the face of which advertisements are afiixed in any suitable manner, the front of the casing A having an opening, D, through Which the advertisements may be seen. Connected with the rollers, or shafts of the same, are ratehets E, the teeth of one ratchet being in reverse order to those of the other ratchet, whereby the rollers may be rotated in reverse direction for winding and unwinding the apron C.
Mounted on the cabinet, at the sides thereof, are keys F, to whose ends, within the cabinet, are pivoted dogs G H, which extend vertically. The dog G engages with the upper roller, B, and the dog H engages with the lower roller, B'.
It will be seen that by depressing a key F the connected dog is raised, and the ratchet E, and consequently the respective roller, will be rotated. By this provision the apron C can be moved in opposite directions, being wound on one of the rollers and unwound on the other, and thus the advertisements on the apron may be presented to the view through the opening D. The dogs are -weighted or provided with springs, so as to be returned to their normal positions when the keys are let go, and thereby prepared to lake hold of another tooth ot the respective ratchet when said keys are again depressed.
f Within the cabinet-are mounted horizontallyarranged drums J which have ratchets J' secured to their ends or their axles, and with the same engage dogs K, which are hung on vertically-arranged rods L, supported within the cabinet and having heads or buttons at their upper ends accessible at the top of the cabinet, the dogs being held engaged with the ratchets by means of springs.
. On the face of the drums are the names of the months of the year and days of the months and numbers of the year, and the front of the cabinet' has openings M, through which the same may be seen, it being evident that the drums may be rotated, when required, in order to set the calendar daily, weekly, and yearly, by properly depressing the rods L, after which the latter return to their normal position, due to the action of suitably-located springs L'. Bearing against the rollers B B are springs N, which prevent improper rotation of the rollers, and engaging with the ratchets J are stop-pawls P, for preventing reverse rotation of the drums.
The front of the cabinet is provided with supports for an inkstand, sponge-cup, die., and pen-racks, and the sides have racks for writing-paper and other stationery.
The cabinet is made with two faces, and the rollers, drums, and operating mechanism and other appurtenances are duplicated, so that each face of the cabinet exhibits an advertisement and presents a calendar.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. An advertising-cabinet having the drums J with ratchets J', the vertical spring-rod L,
having pawls K on opposite sides thereof and pivoted thereto, and adapted to rotate said drums, the spring L', connecting the upper ends of said pawls, and stops L, all substantially as described.
2. An advertising-cabinet having the horizon talrollersB B', located one above the other, each provided with ratchets E, secured at the ends thereof, the teeth of one of the said ratchets being in reverse order to the teeth of the IOO other ratchet, and two keys, one of which has a dog adapted to actuate one f said rollers, and the other key having a dog adapted to actuate the other roller, all of said parts being combined and arranged substantially as described.
3. An advertising-cabinet having the horizontal rollers B B', placed one above the other, the endless apron @,passing around said drums,
ratchets E, secured to opposite ends of said zo
