UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
BENJAMIN F. CALDWELL, OF WHEELING, VEST VIRGINIA.
PACKING AND NESTING STOVE-PIPES.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 361,926, dated April 26, 1887.
Application filed October 18, 1386. Serial No. 216,518. (No model.)
To all whoml it may concern:
Be it known that I, BENJAMIN F. CALD- WELL, a citizen of the United States, residing at Wheeling, in the county of Ohio and State of Vest Virginia, have invented new and useful Improvements in Packing and Nesting Stove-Pipes, of which the following is a specicationd Myinvention relates to animproved method of packing and nesting stovepipes, the purpose being to prepare .the same for either storage or transportation in bulk, and to afford a secure protection against injury from rough handling or from accidental blows, whereby the contour of the joints at the point of union might be destroyed.
The invention consists in the several novel features of construction and combinations of parts, hereinafter fully set forth, and definitely pointed out in the claims annexed to this description.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective View of the entire device. Fig. 2 is a central vertical section of Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is an end elevation of Fig. 1. transverse section of the same.
In the drawings, the reference-numeral 1 denotes the exterior joint of pipe as thepackage is made up, which is made of somewhat greater length than the others.
The numerals 2, 3, and 4 denota-respectively, the remaining joints, which may betwo, three, or four, or even more, in number.
Each of the several sections or joints is intended to be of like diameter and form continuations of the same length of piping, and each is formed with a doubled edge, 5, as seen in Fig. 4, adapted to receive a key, 6, Figs. 2 and 4, by which the edges are joined longitudinally, according to the known construction, the end of each section being crimped, as usual. The manner of assembling and securing the package is as follows:
The inner sections, or those denoted by the numerals 2 3 4, 85e., are nested one within the other, as seen in Fig. 4, the joining edges being preferably laid upon the same side'of the package. The outer section, l, is hen added, or the said nested sections are/placed Fig. 4 is av within it, and wooden heads or disks 7 are then applied, having such diameter that in order to introduce said disks within the ends lot" the outer section the latter must be somewhat spread, as seen in Fig. 4. Each of the wooden disks 7 is provided with a kerf, 8, formed in its edge, and each of these kerfs receives one of the doubled edges 9, by which the outer joint of the section is connected with its key 10, said key being of an increased length.
The construction and arrangement of the parts are such that when the same are in place the interior faces of the disks 7 rest against the ends of the inner or nested sections of the pipe, while the ends of the outer section embrace the peripheries of said disks, and are locked to them by means of the kerfs 8. In order to make the union of the parts more perfect and secure them from injury, I prefer `to add nails'or screws 11, which pass through the edges of the section 1' at the ends, and engage with the blocks or disks S. If desired, a third nail may be added, as shown at 12, Fig. 3; but I do not consider these auxiliary fastenings a-s forming any essential part of my invention. In like manner wires or cords 13 may be carried around the body of the package, as shown in Fig. 1.
The interior of the packages furnishes space for the requisite number of keys 10, by which the free edges of the several sections are united, as seen in Figs. 2 and 4.
The advantage of this method ol' packing is found in the fact that not only are the ends of the nested sections caused to abut against the inner faces of the disks 7, whereby they are fully protected from injury, but the ends of the outer section, 1, receive solid support upon the disks 7, whereby they are completely protected from injury. j
Having thus described my invention, what I claim is l 1. The herein-described package of nested stove-pipes, consisting of a number of open steam pipe joints of approximately equal lengths placed one within another, an outer open seam-joint of somewhat greater length, and wooden heads or disks abutting against the ends of the inner joints and secured in space being occupied by the keys and pipeeaoh end of the outer pi pe-joint, substantially ties, substantially as described. 1o
as described, v
2. The package described, consisting of the outer open seamsjoint, 1, the disks or heads 7, f
secured in the ends 0i the same, and the nested joints 2 -3 4, &c., placed between the disks and Within the outer section, the innei` In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two Witnesses.
BENJAMIN F. CALDVELL. W'itnesses:
NVM. H. STELLE, V. J. BODLEY.
