IMPROVEMENT IN MODES OF STRAPPING PACKAGES WITH WIRE.

Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 170,95 3, dated December 14,1875; application filed April 28, 1875.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, NATHANIEL O. HYN- soN, of New Orleans, in the parish of Orleans, State of Louisiana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Mode of Strapping Packages with Wire, of which the following is a specification:

This invention relates to an improvement in straps or hoops, and the method of applying the same, for the purpose of securing and preventing the breaking open of boxes, cases, caddies, barrels, and other wooden merchandise-packages in transportation.

It consists, first, in a strap or hoop of metal wire, of any desired size, and of suitable length to surround a given package or box, the ends of said wire either meeting or lapping, and each end terminating in a loop or hook, which is secured to the box or package by means of a staple, hook, nail, or other suitable fastening; said strap or hook may be further se- .ing the tightening bends, curves, or loops.

D, Fig. 1, is an ordinary merchandise-box, made of wooden boards. G G are wire straps surrounding each end of said box, the ends of said straps, respectively, lapping and being secured to the box by means of nails driven through the loops E. Instead of nails, staples or other suitable fastenings may be used, and the strap may be secured in position by means of staples O straddling it, and driven into the box.

In practice, I form the straps into circular rings or hoops, and in applying them to boxes or other packages I set one of the hoops upon the box, and drive a nail or staple through one of the terminal loops, securing it firmly. I then unroll the hoop upon and around the box, and secure the other end in the same manner as the first. Straddling-staples may be placed upon the straps at suitable intervals, to hold it in proper position. I place one of these straps around each end of the package, and at such intermediate points as-may be desired. It the strap does not set close and snugly to the box at all points, or if, in the course of rough handling, a strap should become loose, I form bends, curves, orloops therein, for the purpose of taking up the slack. These bends, curves, or loops I form, in the manner shown in Fig. 2, by means of a wrench. This wrench consists of an iron bar, A, having a short bifurcated arm bent at a right angle at one end. By straddling the strap with the bifurcated or forked end, and turning the arm A more or less, as required, a bend, loop, or curve may be formed at any desired point of suflicient extent to take up all slack in the strap, and cause it to lie snugly against the box, furnishing ample security against breakage from rough handling in transportation.

In order to furnish greater security in the case of extra heavy packages, and to prevent the ends or tops and bottoms from bursting or separating from the sides, I pass wire straps over said ends or tops and bottoms, and secure the ends of said straps, as hereinbefore described, and as shown at F in Fig. 1.

Instead of the straps being formed in circles or hoops, and of such length that one strap will surround the entire box or other package, they may consist of short straight pieces having loops at each end, and of such length that two or more are required to surround a package, and in case two were required, I would bend one over one side of the box or package, allowing its ends to extend somewhat beyond the middles of the two adjacent sides of said pickage, and then bend another short strap over the opposite side of the package, and allow the ends to extend somewhat beyond the ends of the first piece, the ends of both pieces being secured by nails or staples, as before described.

Having now fully described my invention, I claim 1. The metal-wire strapping or hooping for boxes, barrels, cases, caddies, and other merchandise-packages, formed and applied substantially as described.
