UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
THOMAS BRABSOMQMELYAFK, NEW JERSEY.
LATCH FO R REFRIG ERATGfiS; 8oQ
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 361,922, dated April 26, 1887.
Application filed February 3, 1887. Serial No. 226,410. (No model.)
To aZZ whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, THOMAS BRABSON, a citizen of the United States, residing at Newark, in the county of Essex and State of New Jersey, haveinvented new and useful Improvements in Latches for Refrigerators, &c., of which the following is a specification.
The object of my invention is to provide a novel latch, especially adapted for the doors of refrigerators, and which is simple and very durable in use.
The object of my invention I accomplish in the manner and by the means hereinafter described and claimed, reference being made to the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 represents a front view of a latch embodying my invention. Fig.2 is a vertical section in the plane as m, Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a similar section in the plane 1 3 Fig. 1. Fig. 4 is a horizontal section in the plane 2 z, Fig. 1. Fig. 5 is a front elevation showing the latch-bolt withdrawn. Fig. 6 is a vertical section in the plane .90 0:, Fig. 5.
Si milarletters indicate corresponding parts.
In the drawings, the letter A designates a latch-bolt, which has secured thereto a threaded shank, B, that extends through the doorjamb G, and is secured at the other end by a nut and jam-nut, so that the latch bolt can be freely rotated. The shank B is secured in a hub, b, on the latclrbolt A, and said hub is provided with a tooth, c, which is adapted to.
engage with stops d d, formed in a socket in the rigid bolt-plate D, into which socket the huh 2) extends. The stops (1 d are so arranged with reference to the tooth 0 that the latchbolt A can be swung from a vertical toa horizontal position, or through an angle of ninety degrees. A handle, A, on the latch-bolt A facilitates the manipulation of the same.
In the end of the latch-bolt Ais formed a recess, in which is fitted a roller-stud, E, that can freely rotate about a pintle secured in the bolt, and said roller-stud is adapted to engage with a catch-plate, F, when the bolt is swung The catch-plate F is pivoted at g to a lug on the rigidly-secured base-plate G, and is subjected to the action of astiff spring, Hsuch, for instance, as a block of rubber or similar elastic materialwhich fits tightly in a recess in the base-plate G. The catchplate, which is in the shape of a trough, is provided with an illclined face, or may be set at an angle, so that when it is engaged by the latch-boltit is forced inward against the action of the spring H, and at the completion of the movement of the bolt the door is tightly closed against the jamb. A stop, as h, formed by the fiat portion of the lower end of the catch-plate, is intended to come into contact with a ledge or stop, h, on the base-plate G and limit the motion of the catch-plate. i
In the catch-plate is formed a circular depression or recess, g, which receives a portion of the roller-stud E, and thereby retains the bolt in its horizontal or looking position with great security. A bent arm or handle, I, extending from the base-plate G and depending in front of the catch-plate, is intended to be grasped when the door G is to he opened, but also serves to guide the bolt in looking the door, for which purpose the lower end of the said handle is free and disconnected from the baseplate G, so as to provide a space between the catch-plate and the free end of the handle for the entrance of the swinging latch-bolt.
What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. The combination, with a pivoted latchbolt, of a roller-stud carried by the same, a catch-plate, and a spring supporting the same, said catch-plate containing a recess for receiving and retaining the roller-stud, substantially as shown and described.
2. The combination, with a latclrbolt, of a roller-stud carried by the same,a hinged catch-plate provided with a recess, a spring supporting the plate, and stops for the bolt, substantially as described.
3. The combination, with a latch-bolt, of a roller-stud carried by the same, stops for said latch-bolt, a hinged catch-plate provided with a recess to receive the roller-stud, a rubber spring supporting the catch-plate, and a stop for the latter, substantially as shown and described.
4. The combination, with a pivoted latchbolt, of a roller-stud carried by the same, a catclrplate, a spring supporting the same, a
base-plate, anda grasping-handle onsaid plate In testimony whereof I have hereunto set depending in front of the catch-plate, and havmy hand and seal in the presence of two subing a free lower end disconnected from said scribing Witnesses.
