Abstract

A spool for thread of the type used in textile industry or the like made up of a generally hollow cylindrical body and a hollow cylindrical center mandrel section concentric to the outside cylindrical body. The body and mandrel section are both integrally molded to the fixed flanged end section. The separable end section is in the form of a disk with a hole adapted to align with the hole in the mandrel section. A bead, V-shaped in cross section, is fixed to the separable end flange and a groove having a cross section shape that is complementary in shape to the Vshaped head is formed in the distal end of the body. The separable flange may be fixed to the body by inserting the bead in the groove and affixing it by means of a suitable adhesive.

Primary Examiner- Leonard D. Christian Attorney-Charles L. Lovercheck ABSTRACT: A spool for thread of the type used in textile industry or the like made up of a generally hollow cylindrical body and a hollow cylindrical center mandrel section concentric to the outside cylindrical body. The body and mandrel section are both integrally molded to the fixed flanged end section. The separable end section is in the form of a disk with a hole adapted to align with the hole in the mandrel section. A head. V-shaped in cross section, is fixed to the separable end flange and a groove having a cross section shape that is complementary in shape to the V-shaped head is formed in the distal end of the body. The separable flange may be fixed to the body by inserting the bead in the groove and affixing it by means ofa suitable adhesive.
SPOOL STATEMENT OF INVENTION This invention relates to spools and, more particularly, to spools for thread in the textile art.
STATEMENT OF PRIOR ART Heretofore spools for use in the textile art have generally been made of wood. Efforts to make the spools of plastics have had various shortcomings for various reasons.
OBJECTS OF THE INVENTION DESCRIPTION OF THE DRAWINGS FIG. 1 is an isometric view of a spool according to the invention.
FIG. 2 is an exploded view of the spool with the parts shown 7 separate.
FIG. 3 is a cross-sectional view taken on line 3-3 of FIG. 2.
DETAILED DESCRIPTION OF THE DRAWINGS Now with more particular reference to the drawings, the spool shown generally at 10 has a hollow cylindrical body 11 integrally fixed at one end to the fixed flange 12 and having a groove 15 in its distal end which is complementary in shape to the annular bead l6 and concentric to the body. Both the bead and groove are wedge shape in cross section.
The center section 14 is in the form of a hollow cylinder concentric to the cylindrical body 11 and fixed to the flange 12. The distal end of the center section member 14 has a circumferential groove 19 which will receive the complementary shaped bead 20. The bore 18 in the end disk 13 aligns with the bore 21 in the center section and in the body. Thus when the end disk 13 is placed in position with its beads 16 and 20 received in the grooves 15 and 19 respectively, a suitable adhesive material such as a two-part epoxy adhesive is placed on the end section and the disk or both parts can be ultrasonically fused together. The two parts of the spool are held rigidly together and the end sections 12 and 13 are in perfect alignment with each other.
The embodiments of the invention in which an exclusive property or privilege is claimed are defined as follows:
1. A spool comprising a hollow cylindrical body,
a hollow cylindrical center section disposed concentric to the hollow body,
a fixed end disk, said fixed end disk being integrally molded to said body and said center section,
a separable flange, said separable flange having means to engage said body arid means to engage said center section and adhesive means for fixing said body and said center section to said separate end disk.
2. The spool recited in claim 1 wherein said means for attaching said body to said separate end disk comprises a groove in one of said body and said disk and a bead on the other of said body and said disk,
said bead being complementary in shape to said groove.
3. The spool recited in claim 2 wherein a second groove is formed in one of said body and said disk,
and a second bead is formed in one of said body and said disk,
said second bead being adapted to be received in said second groove.

Claims (3)

1. A spool comprising a hollow cylindrical body, A HOLLOW CYLINDRICAL CENTER SECTION DISPOSED CONCENTRIC TO THE HOLLOW BODY, A FIXED END DISK, SAID FIXED END DISK BEING INTEGRALLY MOLDED TO SAID BODY AND SAID CENTER SECTION, A SEPARABLE FLANGE, SAID SEPARABLE FLANGE HAVING MEANS TO ENGAGE SAID BODY AND MEANS TO ENGAGE SAID CENTER SECTION AND ADHESIVE MEANS FOR FIXING SAID BODY AND SAID CENTER SECTION TO SAID SEPARATE END DISK.
2. The spool recited in claim 1 wherein said means for attaching said body to said separate end disk comprises a groove in one of said body and said disk and a bead on the other of saId body and said disk, said bead being complementary in shape to said groove.
3. The spool recited in claim 2 wherein a second groove is formed in one of said body and said disk, and a second bead is formed in one of said body and said disk, said second bead being adapted to be received in said second groove.
