BEDCLOTHES-FASTENER.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 361,440, dated April 19, 1887.

To all whom it may concern.-

, Be it know u that I, JOHN DANIEL MITOHELL, a citizen of the United States, residing at Savona, in the county of Steuben and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Bedclothes-Fasteners, of which the following is a specification.

My invention relates to an improvement in bedclothes-fasteners; and it consists in the peculiar construction and arrangement of the clamp or fastener, that will be more fully set forth hereinafter, and particularly pointed out in the claims.

The object of my invention is to provide a device which will securely fasten the bedclothes to the bedstead'to prevent children from kicking the covering off of them during the night, and this object I accomplish by the peculiar device hereinafter described, and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in

' showing the manner of attaching the bed-covering thereto. Fig. 2 is an elevation of the inner side of the rail of a bedstead with my improved bedclothes-fastener attached thereto. A represents the bedclothes-fastener, which is formed from a single pieceof spring-wire, that is preferably made of steel, but may be of any other suitable material. One end of the wire is first doubled in the direction of its length to form the spring-arms B and O, which bear against each other, an eye or coil, D, being formed between the meeting ends of the said arms, so as to enable the same to press firmly against each other. The outer end of the arm B is provided with an eye, E. The remaining portion of the wire is bent upwardly at right angles from the arm 0, to form a shank, F, in the outer end of which is an eye, G. Four of these clamps are provided for abedstead, and the said clamps are attached tothe side rails, H, of the bedstead, on the inner sides thereof, at the corners, by means of screws K, which pass through the eyes G and-enter the rail. This enables the clamps to be swung through a quarter of a circle, and either turn upwardly, so as to bear against the head or foot of the bedstead, as shown indotted linesin Fig. 2, or are turned down, so as to bear against the inner side of the bedstead-rail, as shown in solid lines 111 Fig. 2.

This causes the sheet to be stretched snugly over the sleeping child, and the covering on the outer sideof the sheet will not be ,displaced by the childs movements. clamps are pivoted to the bedstead by the screws K, and are thereby adapted to turn through nearly a quarter of a circle, the said clamps will yield to any moderate movement that the child can make, so as not to cause the bedclothes to press upon him so firmly as to undulyrestrain his movements; butthe clothes will be held with sufficient firmness to prevent the child from kicking them off of him during his sleep.

It will be noted that the shank F and the clampingarms G and B are all arranged in a line with each other and upon the same plane. This arrangement is advantageous, for the reason that it leaves no lateral projections beyond the sides of the device, and hence enablesthe same to fit in a narrow space between the side of the bed or mattress and the opposing inner side of the rail of the bedstead, and without catching the bed or mattress, and 0011- sequently the movement of the device upon the pivot is not impeded.

Having thus. described my invention, I claim- 1., Thecombination of a bedstead-rail with the clothes-fastener, comprising the shank F, having the spring clampingjaws at one end arranged in line therewith and upon the same plane, the other end of the shank being pivoted to one side of the bed-rail, for the purpose set forlh, substantially as described.
