A PRIR OF SISSORS HAVING A PAIR OF BLADES ENLARGED AT ONE END, THE ENLARGMENTS CINTINUING INTO HANDLE PORTIONS. THE ENLARGED ENDS IF THE BLADES ARE PIVOTALLY AND ADJUSTABLY CONNECTED TO EACH OF OTHE. THE PIVOTAL AND ADJUSTCONNECTION INCLUDES A PIVOT PIN EXTENDING THROUGH ALIGNED HOLES IN THE ENLARGED HEAD PORTIONS OF THE BLADES, WITH ITS THREADED END PROTRUDING OUTWARDLY OF THE ENLARGED HEAD PORTION OF THE ADJACENT BLADE. A KNOB HAVING A THREADED SOCKET IS THREADEKY MOUUNTED ON THE THREADED ENF OF THE PIVOT PIN WHEREBY TURNING OF THE KNOB ADJUST THE SQUEEZING TENSION OF THE BLADES ON THE MATERIAL BEING CUT.

Cl. 1826b 13/28 (1.8. 1:]. 30-268 2 Claims ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE A pair of scissors having a pair of blades enlarged at one end, the enlargements continuing into handle portions. The enlarged ends of the blades are pi'votally and adjustably connected to each other. The pivotal and adjustable connection includes a pivot pin extending through aligned holes in the enlarged head portions of the blades, with its threaded end protruding outwardly of the enlarged head portion of the adjacent blade. A knob having a threaded socket is threadedly mounted on the threaded end of the pivot pin whereby turning of the knob adjusts the squeezing tension of the blades on the material being cut.
This invention relates generally to cutting instruments and more particularly to new and useful improvements in a pair of scissors.
A principal object of the present invention is to provide a pair of scissors with means for adjusting the squeezing pressure of the blades upon the material being cut.
Another object is to provide means for holding the blades in moved adjusted position.

DETAILED DESCRIPTION OF THE DRAWINGS Referring now in detail to the various views of the drawings, in FIG. 1 a pair of scissors embodying one form of the invention is illustrated and designated generally at 10. The pair of scissors 10 comprises a pair of blades 12 and 14 preferably made from bars of flat steel. Both blades are enlarged or formed with head or bowed portions 16 and 18, respectively, at one end thereof. The head or bowed portions are loosely united by a pivotal and adjustable connection shown in detail in FIG. 2. The body of blade 12 tapers to a point 22 and is formed with a knife edge 24 along one long edge thereof. The body of blade 14 is of uniform width and at its free outer end is formed with an abrupt tapered portion 26 terminating in a point 28. One long edge of the body is formed with a knife edge 30. The blades overlap with their points 22 and 28 juxtaposed.
The enlarged head portions 16 and 18 of the blades 12 and 14 are triangular in shape at the inner united pivoted ends theerof forming shoulders 32 and 34 on said ends. One of the shoulders, the shoulder 32 for instance of head portion 16 of blade 12 is formed with an integral curved extension constituting a handle 36. The integral joined inner end of said extension 36 is offset laterally of the inner surface of the blade 12 thereby forming a shoulder 38 thereat. The handle 36 terminates at its outer free end in a circular loop 40 for the thumb of the hand of the operator, which loop is on a plane aligned with the plane of the offset shoulder portion 38. The shoulder 32 of the other enlarged head portion 18 of blade 14 is also formed with an integral short angular extension constituting a handle 42. The integral joined end of said extension 42 is offset laterally of the inner surface of the blade 14 thereby forming a shoulder 44 thereat. The extension 42 terminates at its outer free end in an elongated ovalshaped loop 46 for the other fingers of the hand of the operator, disposed in the same plane as the handle 36, when assembled. The extensions with their loops may be formed separately from the blades and rigidly fixed to the blades and may be colored for identification and aesthetic purposes if desired.
The enlarged head portion 16 of blade 12 is formed with a central round hole 50 in its outer surface. Hole 50 continues into an oblong recess 54 in the inner surface of head portion 16 of blade 12.
The enlarged head portion 18 of blade 14 is formed with a round hole 56 extending through the head portion and blade 14, and with a countersink 58 therearound in the outer surface of the head portion 18. When the blades 12 and 14 and head portions 16 and 18, respectively, are in juxtaposition the holes 50 and 56 are in alignment.
The pivotal connection uniting the blades -12 and 14 includes a pivot pin 60 having a flattened shank 62 rectangular in cross-section and terminating at one end in a disc-shaped head 64 and at its other end in an externally screw threaded end 66, a neck portion 68 being disposed between the disc head 64 and shank 62. The pivot pin 60 extends through the round hole 56 in the head or bowed portion 18 of blade 14, and through the oblong recess 54 and round hole 50 in the head portion 16 of blade 12. When the pin is so extended as best shown in FIG. 3, the disc-shaped head 64 is disposed in the countersink 58 of head portion 18, with a split ring 70 and washer 72 surrounding the neck portion 60 of the pin, the split ring 70 seating against the base of the countersink. A plastic nut or knob 76 with knurled periphery 78 carries a corrugated metal ring or circular perforated plate 80 on its inner surface. The ring or plate 80 is formed with corrugations or protrusions 82 on its inner surface and is secured to the face of the nut or knob around an internally screw threaded socket 84 in the inner surface of the nut or knob at its center. A flat metal washer 86 with opposed kinks 8-8 in its outer periphery is interposed between the metal ring 80 on the knob and the base of the countersink 54 in the head portion 16 of blade 12. The opposed kinks 88 are adapted to coact with the opposed grooves between the corrugations 82 on the metal ring 80 on the nut or knob. In FIG. 7, a modified form of metal washer 86' having a finger 90 extending from its periphery is shown in spaced relation from a head or bowed portion 16' of a blade having a slot 90 in the base of the countersink 54'. The finger is 3 adapted to be inserted through the slot when the parts are assembled.
In operation, the blades 12 and 14 are opened by manipulating the handles 36 and 42 and the piece of material to be cut is inserted therebetween. The squeezing pressure of the blades on the material is then adjusted by turning the nut or knob 76. Continued pivotal action of the blades will cut the material.
In FIGS. 8 to 12, inclusive, a modified pivotal and adjustable connection between the blades 12" and 14" of the pair of scissors is shown. In this form of connection, the pivot pin 60" has a disc-shaped head 64" with an inwardly extending flange 92 adapted, with the edge wall of countersink 58" in head portion 18", to house a pair of washers 72", disposed back to back, on the squared shank 62 of the pin. The nut or knob 76" is formed with a central recess 94 in its inner surface and mounted in the recess there is a bushing member 96 having an annular flange 98 seated in the recess 94. The central bore 100 of the bushing is internally screw threaded as indicated at 102. An annular spring pressed series of detent balls 104 protrude from the outer surface of the bushing member 96. A cup-shaped adapter 106 having a flat bottom wall 108 and side wall 110 is loosely slipped over the body of the bushing member 96 in spaced relationship thereto. The side wall 110 is fonmed with an annular series of spaced holes 112 adapted to receive the ball detents 104 when the adapter is in position on the bushing member. The bottom Wall 108 of the adapter is perforated at its center and around the perforation therein there is fixed a tubular member 114, square in cross section. When assembled the square shaped tubular member 114 extends through the square shaped hole or recess 50". When assembled, the pivot pin 60" extends through the hole 56" in head portion 18", through the aligned hole 50" in head portion 16", through the squared tubular member 114, through the adapter 106 into the bore 100 in bushing member 96. By turning the nut or knob 76", the space between the head portions 16 and 18" and blades 12" and 14" may be enlarged or reduced as desired in order to adjust the squeezing pressure of the blades on the material being cut. The ball detents 104 coacting with the holes 112 in the adapter 106 will hold the blades in moved adjusted position.
The outer surface of the knob 76 may be divided into graduated section with identifying numerals as indicated at 116, the identifying numerals being in number equal to the number of holes 112 in the adapter 106 for indexing purposes. The outer surface may also contain other identifying indicia as indicated at 118.
In all other respects, the pair of scissors 10" is similar to the scissors 10 and similar reference numerals are used to indicate similar parts.
I claim:
1. A pair of scissors comprising a pair of juxtaposed blades having enlarged head portions at one end thereof,
handles forming extensions of said head portions, and means of pivotal and adjustable connection between the head portions of the blades, the head portions of the blades being provided with aligned holes, the means of pivotal and adjustable connection including an elongated pivot pin extending through the aligned holes, said pin having a disc-shaped head at one end and an externally threaded portion at the other end, and a socketed knob on the threaded end portion of the pin with internal threads coacting with the external threads on the threaded'end portions of the pin such that a turning of the knob is adapted to move the blades toward and away from each other in order to adjust squeezing pressure on material being cut, the pivot pin having a shank portion with flattened sides and a neck portion between the flattened sides and the disc-shaped head of the pin, a partial depth of the hole in one of said head portions being flattened to receive the flattened sides of the shank portion of the pin, one of said head portions having a countersink around the hole therein, and juxtaposed washer and helical split ring assembly around the neck portion of the pin at a site nearer said disc-shaped head and seated in the countersink in said head portion, with the washer between the disc-shaped head and the split ring, a second ring fixed to the inner surface of the knob, said second ring having spaced radial corrugations, and a washer around the shank portion of the pin disposed between the second ring and the head portion of the blade devoid of said flattened head portion, said latter washer having kinks on each of opposite sides of the washers central hole with said kinks extending in a substantially common direction about parallel to the longitudinal axes of said central hole and of the said pin when inserted, said kinks being coactable with the corrugations on the second ring for holding the blades in moved-adjusted position.
2. A pair of scissors of the kind described in claim 1, and loops formed on the free ends of the extensions, the loop on the end of one extension being circular, the loop on the end of the other extension being substantially oval in shape.
