JOHN BAIRD WILSON, OF MARQUETTE, MICHIGAN.
CAR-COUPLING.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent N o. 361,104, dated April 12, 1887.
Application filed January 13, 1887. Serial No. 224,219. (No model.)
had to the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specification.
This invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in car-couplers.
The invention consists in the peculiar construction of the various parts and their combination, as more fully hereinafter described and claimed.
Figurelis aperspective view of a draw-head, partially broken away to show the arrangement of parts, and showing my improvement.
Fig. 2 is a perspective view of the pendulumlatch and its attachments detached from the draw-head. Fig. 3 is a vertical central section through the draw-head. Fig. 4. is a horizontal section on the line a: w in Fig. 3.
In the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specification, A represents a castiron draw-head having a chamber,]3, formed therein, with guides a formed upon the side walls thereof, for the purpose of guiding the entering-link C to the center of such chamber.
D is a pendulum latch consisting of a flat piece of metal having two ears, b, formed upon its upper end. These ears are perforated, and
through the side walls of the draw-head there are run the crank-arms E. One of these crankarms, passing through one side of the drawhead, also passes through one of the ears I), and a pin or key, 0, through the end of the crank-arm secures the latter in place. The other crank-arm, passing through the opposite side of the draw'head, also passes through the opposite ear of the pendulum-latch, and is secured by a similar pin or key, a. The handles (1 of these crank-arms project from the crankarms at right angles thereto and in opposite directions, as shown, so that at all times and in all positions they may balance each other. The space between the ears I), at the upper end of the pendulum-latch D, forms a rest for the coupling-pin F when such pendulum-latch is normal orperpendicular. From this point the front of this latch is cutaway upon a gradual incline, as shown, so that when the lower end of the latch is forced to the rear the lower end of the coupling-pin is provided with a path, down which it may slide easily and without a jerk to engage with the entering-link, which forces the lower end of the pendulumlatch backward until the bight of the link is disclosed to the descending pin. The front face of the pendulumlatch will now rest against the end of the link, and, normally, the latter will project from the draw-head on a plane parallel to that of the earth. Should the position of the adjacent car with which a coupling is to be made be higher or lower, by turning either of the handles of the crank-arms slightly in one direction or the other the projecting end of the link can be elevated or depressed at pleasure, so that it will enter the opposite draw-head at any varying height.
If by any accident the pendulum-latch is broken, it maybe removed by withdrawing the keys or pins in the ends of the crank-arms, and a new one can then readily be put in.
WVhat' I claim as my invention is 1. The combination, with a draw-head, of crank-arms, apendulum-latch supported upon the inner ends of said arms, and handles on said crank-arms extending in diametrically opposite directions to balance each other, substantially as described.
2. The combination, with the draw head and two independent crank-arms journaled in said head, of the pendulum-latch on the inner ends of said crank-arms and formed with ears I) and the removable pins or keys 0, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
3. The pendulunrlatch having ears upon its upper end, the space between such ears forming a rest for the coupling-pin and from this point cut away upon an incline toward the front, in combination with a draw-head and crank-arms, substantially as set forth.
JOHN BAIRD \VILSON.
