CAR-COUPLING.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 400,306, dated March 26, 1889. Application led January 3, 1889. Serial No. 295,278. (No model.)
To @ZZ whom, it may concern:
Be it known that I, HARRISON V. CONWAY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Boone, in the county of Boone and State of Iowa, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Car-Couplings; andldo deelare the following to be a full, clear, and eX- act description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters and iigures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
This invention relates to car-couplings of that class which employ a swinging` pin, and has for its obj ect to provide vertical guides on the draw-bar to receive lateral projections on the sides of the pin. These projections guide the pin in its vertical movements, form journals for the pin to swing about, and serve,
as stops to limit the downward movement of the pin.
The invention further relates to a supplemental pin which is adapted to hold the link securely in place, and which is removed through an opening in the bottom side of the draw-bar, being supported on a removable slide.
The improvement consists of the novel features and peculiar construction and combination of the parts, which will be hereinafter more fully described and claimed.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is an end view of a car embodying my invention; Fig. 2, a vertical central longitudinal section of the draw-bar o n an enlarged scale; Fig. 3, a cross-section of the draw-bar on the line x of Fig. 2, and Fig. 4 a bottom view showing the dovetail slide.
The draw-bar A is of ordinary construction, except that it is provided with vertical standards B on its front end, and with openings a and a in its top and bottom sides, respectively. The lower opening, a', inclines rearwardly to form the tapering ledge a2. The standards B are preferably integral with the draw-bar, and have vertical grooves b in their opposing sides. The lower ends of these grooves terminate in the shoulders b. The swinging pin C has lateral projections which work in the grooves b and form journals for the pin .to swing on. The side levers, E, pivoted between their ends to the end of the car, have their inner ends connected by, short chains e to the chain G, which is connected at its lower end to the pin C, and have their outer ends working in the keepers e, and extended within convenient reach from the sides of thecar. The lever F, deiiected between its ends. and pivotally connected with the front of the car, is connected at its lower end with the chain G by the short chain f', and has its upper end extending within reach from the top of the car and limited in its movements by the keeper f.
The auxiliary pin H is inserted and removed through an opening in the bottom of the draw-bar, and is supported on the slide hf, which is dovetail in form and which is held between the guides-'L'. The link is held at one end to the end of one of the cars by the pin H, and its other end is coupled to the end of the other car by the swinging pin C, in the well-known manner. As the free end of the link enters the draw-bar of the car to be coupled, the pin of said car will swing in at its lower end and ride over the end of the link, and when it has cleared the end of the link it will gravitate, and, engaging with the link, couple the cars. To uncouple the cars, which operation can be performed from either side or the'top of the car, move either of the side levers, E, or the top lever, F. This operation lifts the pin and the work of uncoupling is performed.
Having thus described my invention,what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, 1s-
1. The herein shown and described carcoupling, composed of the following elements: the draw bar having vertical standards grooved on their opposing sides, and having the openings c and a', the swing-pin C, having lateral projections which work in the grooved standards, the levers E E and F, connected with pin C, the supplemental pin II, adapted to be inserted through an open ing in the bottom of the dlzuv-bnr, and the slide 71, for Supporting the Suid pion Il', subsumtally as and for the purpose declfbed.
2. In u euneouplng, the combination, with the pin H, which is adapted to be removed and inserted through :Ln opening in the bott'om of the drzuv-bzu', of the slide .for supporting the said pin, substantially as and for the purpose described.
