Description

(No Model.) v
I S. R. COPELAND.
GAR COUPLING.
Patented June 28, 1887.
m 35% I V 1 UNITED STATES PATENT QFFICEO SAMUEL RUDOLPH COPELAND, OF HURON, DAKOTA TERRITORY.
CAR -COUPLING.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 365,366, dated June 28, 1887. Application filed March 28, 1887. Serial No. 282,772. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, SAMUEL RUDOLPH COPELAND, a citizen of the United States, residing at Huron, in the county of Beadle, Dakota Territory, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Oar-Couplings, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in car-couplings; and it consists in certain novel features, hereinafter described and claimed.
In'the accompanying drawings, which fully illustrate my invention, Figure 1 isa perdistant from the center of said block. 1
spective view showing the end of a car provided with my improved car-coupling. Fig. 2 is a vertical longitudinal section showing two couplers together. Fig. 3 is a detail perspective view of the combined link and coupling-pin; and Fig. 4 is a detail perspective view of the slotted plate which is placed over the pivotal connection of the pin and link. 7 Referring to the drawings by letter, A designates the end of a car, having the draw-head B secured to the bottom thereof in the usual or any preferred manner. The bottom of the draw-head is provided with a longitudinal slot, 0, which extends from its mouth to near the rear of the same, and communicates with the open interior of the draw-head. The coupling link works in this slot, as will be hereinafter described, and the upper side of the draw-head is provided near its front end with a similar shorter slot, D, through which the coupling-pin enters the'draw-head. The upper side of the draw-head, near. the rear end thereof, is recessed, the front and rear walls of said recess being inclined up and backward in parallel planes. Afilling-block, E, is placed in this recess, and has the inclined or beveled edges e, to fit against the inclined walls of the recess. The fillingblock is provided, also, with two longitudinal slots, F, nearto and equi- G is the coupling-pin, which is formed in the are of a circle, as shown, and has the arm H extending rearward from its upper end. The arm H terminates over the slots F, andis so formed as to provide the depending lugs or ears I, which pass through the slots F and re ceive the end of the coupling-link J between them. The rear end of the coupling-link is provided with an angular opening or perforation, and the lower ends of the lugs I are provided with similar angular perforations. Through these perforations I insert an angular pin, K, having cylindrical ends, which restin 5.5
notches formed in the inner faces of the side walls of the draw-head, and form trunnions on which the pin and link swing in the operation of the device. The link J is a solid bar for the greater part of its length, and at its front end it is provided with the longitudinal slot L,'which is engaged by the pin of the other coupling when two cars are coupled.
When using my device, the pin and link of one coupling is raised and the pin and link of the other coupling islowered, as will be readily understood from the drawings. The pin and link are so arranged withrespect to each other that when one is within the draw-head the other will be without the same, and the pin K,
being angular in cross section, serves to keep them in this position.
M and N are rods running to the top and side of the car respectively, and connected to the pin to operate the same, as will be readily understood.
In operation the link of one coupling is engaged by the pin of the other. When the link strikes against the pin, the curved formation of the same will allow it to easily yield to the motion of the link and ride over the end of the same to engage the slot therein. Should the pin or link be broken, the block E is re moved and the pin K disengaged from the rear ends of the link and pin. part is replaced by a new one, and the several parts then returned to their normal operative positions.
'It will be seen that my device is cheap,
simple, and efficient, and can be operated with out the necessity of the attendant going be tween the cars and endangering his life.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, 1s-
1. The combination, with the draw-head having a recess in its upper side, of the fillingblock placed in said recess, and the pin passing through said block and connected to the link below the same, substantially as specified.

fomtions in their rear ends, and the angular SAMUEL RUDOLPH COPELAND. 5 pin passed thronghsaid perforations and hav- W'itnesses:
ing cylindrical ends which rest in the notches N. H. MERRILL,
in the side walls of the draw-head. J. F. \VILSON.
