HOLDER FOR COLLARS OR CUFFS.

Be it known that I, THEoDoRE GENTZscH, of the city of Brooklyn, in the county of Kings and State of New York, have invented a new and Improved Holder for Collars or Cuffs, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description. y

` My invent-ion relates to holders for collars or cuffs, and has for its object to produce a simple holder, quickly and easily applied,4

which will securely attach either a collar or cuff to the proper band of ashirt.

The invention consists in the construction and combination of the several parts,as will be hereinafter fully set forth, and pointed out in the claims.

Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specication, in which similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures.v

Figure 1 illustrates my holder as applied to a cuff, and Fig. 2 isa side elevation thereof. Fig. 3 illustrates the application of my holder to a collar, and Fig. 4 is a side elevation of the contracted holderapplied in Fig. 3.

The body of my fastener is usually con structed of one piece of metal, made S shape, the two legs A A thereof being of equal length, while the leg Bis made shorter.

Near the curved end of the leg A, I pivot a swinging arm, C, preferably made in loop form, as shown in Fig. 2,in which one side thereof, c, is made straight, the other side, c', being bowed and provided with an inwardlycurved surface at its pivotal end. The said side c is thus formed to receive a slightly-curved projecting pin,'D, which is attached thereto.

The bowed side c of the swinging arm C need not necessarily extend downward to a connection with the body of the fastener. v If desired, it maybe broken off at any point below the top of said arm C. As the swinging arm C is carried over the leg A of the S-shaped body,

as shown by the arrow in Fig. 2, the pin D isadapted to pass one side of the said leg A and enter its point beneath the shield d, secured to the central leg, A', of the said S-shaped body immediately opposite the said swinging arm C.

lar in construction to the upper swinging arm, C, is pivotally attached to the end of the short leg B of the fastener, adapted to be operated-in like manner to said upper swinging arm,but in an opposite direction,as indicated by the lower` arrow, Fig. 2, the pin e ofthe lower swinging arm, E, entering/a shield, F, attached parallel therewith to the lower end of the central leg, A. When the fastener is used to hold a cuff, the swinging arms are opened, asin Fig. 2, and 6o the Wristband of theshirt is made to engage the space between the legs A and A of the S-shaped body, with the leg A projecting downward outside the sleeve. The upper pivoted swinging arm, C, is now pushed forward, 5

and the pin D, piercing the band, enters the shield d, retaining the fastener in position. The cuff is now entered between the short leg B and the central leg, A', and the lower vswinging arm, E, pressed inward, whereupon the 7c said cuff is held securely within the fastener by the entering pin c, as shown in Fig. 1.

Vhen used with a collar,the S-shaped body is made with its legs G, H, and K short and of equal length, and instead of looped arms the solid swinging arms M M' are preferably employed, provided with small looped offsets m at the free ends thereof, purposed to afford a convenient purchase for the fingers when the fastener is applied.

The swinging arm M is pivoted at one side to the upper end of the leg K, the attached pin of the said swinging arm M being adapted to enter a shield, N, secured upon the same side near the center of the leg H.

Upon the opposite side of the fastener the swinging arm M is pivoted to the upper end of the central leg, H, its attached pin being adapted to enter the shield N', secured 'to the leg Gupon the same side of the fastener as that 9o upon which the said swinging arm M is pivoted.

In the application of the fastener to a collar the neckband is made to enter the space between t-he legs G and H, and the said fastener is held thereto by the engagement of the pin n of the swinging arm M. The two endsof the collar are now entered into the space between the legs H and K, and are engaged and held in proper position bythe pin a of the front swing- Ico ing arm, M. Another fastener may be eniployed to attach the collar to the neckband at the back, if desired.

The body of the fastener may be provided with either solid swinging arms, as shown in Fig. 4, or looped, as in Fig. 2, without departing from the spirit of lny invention.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is

l. A collar or cuil' fastener consisting of an S `shaped body having swinging arms carryingpins,substantially as shown and described, and for the purpose herein set forth.

2. A collar or cuft fastener consisting of an vS-shaped body having swinging arms carrying pins,together with shields attached to said body, adapted to receive said pins, substantially as shown and described, and for the pnr pose herein set forth.

3. A collar or cuff fastener consisting of n S-shaped body having two legs, A and A', of equal length, and one short leg, B, the said leg A having attached thereto at top and bottom shields d and F, together with a swinging arm, C, carrying a pin, D, pivoted to the leg A, and :t similar swinging arm, E, provided with a pin, e, pivoted to the short leg B, substantiall y as shown and described, and for the purpose set forth.

4. In a collar or cuff fastener, the combl nation, with the S-shaped body consisting of the legs A A', of equal length, and shorter leg, B, together with the shields d and F, secured to said body, of the swinging arms C and E, carrying pins D and e, substantially as shown and described, and for the purpose set forth.
