UNITED STATES GEORGE RIX LEWIS AND HELEN L.
BOYVMAN, OF LAMOILLE, ILLINOIS.
PENClL-SHARPENER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 360,313, dated March 29,1887.
(No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that we, GEORGE Rix LEwrs and HELEN L. BOWMAN, both of Lamoi11e,in the county of Bureau and State of Illinois, have invented a new and Improved Pencil- Sharpener, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the annexed drawings, forming a part thereof, in which- Figure l is a perspective view of our improved pencil-sharpener. Fig. 2- is a transverse section, and Fig. 3 isa detail view ofone of the hinges of the cover.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures of the drawlogs.
The object of our invention is to provide a pencil-sharpener by means of which a finepoint can readily be obtained, and which is provided with a receptacle in which the dust of the pencil will be received and retained.
Our invention consists in a rectangular box provided with a cover, to which are attached one or more sheets of sand-paper, and hung on hinges formed of cranked or offset wires, and arranged to close the top of the box, or to rest in an inclined position with one edge thereofwithin the box, so that the dust disengaged by the sharpener will be delivered to the box, and thus prevented from being scattered.
The box A is preferably made rectangular in form and of convenient depth for receiving and retaining the dust removed from the pencil in the operation of sharpening. The front end of the box is lowerthan thesides, to admit ofshutting the cover B down upon the end and between the sides.
The cover B is connected with the box by cranked or offset wires 0. (Shown in detail in Fig. 3.) One end of each wire Ois fastened in the edge of the cover, near the extremity thereof, the Wires G being arranged directly opposite each other in opposite edges of the cover. The remaining ends of the wires 0 are inserted in opposite sides of the box, near one end and near the top thereof. By means of the wires 0, arranged in this way, the coveris hinged, so that it may be placed in an inclined position in the end of the box, as shownin full lines in Fig. 2, or turned on the wires, which act as hinges, and closed, as shown in dotted lines in Fig. 2, the front edge of the cover having a pin, a, and the front end of the box A being provided with a spring-catch, b, for engaging the pin when the box is closed.
To the inner surface of the box-cover is sefrom the pencil end by the abrasive surface of the sandpaper will fall into the box A,where it will be retained.
It' will be observed that our improved pencil-sharpener may be handled without danger of soiling the fingers.
The sharpener is intended for sharpening lead-pencils, slate-pencils, crayons, pastels, and similar implements employed in drawing or writing.
Having thus fully described our invention, we claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Iatent 1. The combination, with the box A and cover I5, fitted between the sides of the box, of the cranked wires (I, inserted in the edges ofthe cover and into the sides of the box, substantially as shown and described.
2. As an improved article of manufacture, a pencil-sharpener formed of the box A, having its front end lower than its sides, a cover, B, fitted between the sides of the box, hinges formed of the cranked wires 0, inserted in the edges of the cover and entering the sides of the box, series of sheets of abrasive paper secured to the inner surface of the box-cover, and a fastener for holding the cover ina closed position, substantially as shown and described.
