Abstract

A roller guide comprising a central roller guide body and a Cshaped holder, the roller guide body being slideably mounted in the holder in its axial direction, and the holder being adjustably mounted in the transverse direction on its base, so that the guide body is continuously adjustable to any desired position. The C-shaped holder may be turned with respect to its base through 180*, so that it can be arranged with its open side facing to the left or to the right side of the roller guide body.

In most cases, and notably when rolling a product having a square or circular cross section, the material is flattened to an oval, rectangular or flat rhomboid cross-sectional shape in one passage through a roll groove, and is then fed into the next roll groove in an upright position, that is with its largest cross-sectional dimension perpendicular to the axis of the succeeding rolls.
To steer the rolled material in correct alignment into the groove, guiding devices of a generally funnel-shaped form are mounted close to the roll and in exact lateral alignment with the groove. These guiding devices are called entry guides or simply guides." In modern mills the guides usually incorporate rollers at the narrow exit end of the guiding funnel. Such guides are called roller guides.
This invention relates to a roller guide for the guiding of material to be rolled in perfect alignment with a roll groove.
A serious problem in the design of previously known roller guides has been that they have occupied too much space laterally. When such roller guides were moved laterally as close as possible to the bearing housings (roll chocks) at the ends of the rolling mill rolls, the material to be rolled is introduced at a substantial distance inward from the end of the roll face. This means that the total length of the roll could not be utilized for rolling material.
It is the main object of the invention to provide a roller guide design that overcomes the space limitations of previous designs.
It is a further object of the invention to provide a roller guide design that will allow grooves to be provided much closer to the end of the rolling mill rolls, thereby improving utilization of the roll.
It is a still further object of the invention to provide a roller guide design which allows smooth and continuous fine adjustment of the roller guide position relative to the groove without need for moving the basic mounting hardware of the roller guide unit.
The roller guide design according to the present invention consists of a central roller guide body and a C-shaped holder which only partly encloses the roller guide body, and makes it possible to position the roller guide body very close to the bearing housings (roll chocks) of the rolling mill rolls. The C-shaped holder is further removable from its support, and can be mounted so that either the right hand side or the left hand side of the central roller guide body faces the adjacent bearing houses. 7
In a preferred embodiment of the invention, the central roller guide body is slideably movable within the Cshaped holder in an axial direction, and the holder is laterally adjustable relatively to its support base, whereby exact axial and lateral fine adjustment of the roller guide position relative to the roll grooves becomes possible.
A preferred embodiment of the present invention will be described below with reference to the attached drawings, where:
FIG. 1 is a side view of a roller guide and holder with base plate, and
FIGS. 2 and end views are end-views of the device accord ing to FIG. 1 showing different lateral positions of two such roller guides.
In FIG. 1 the two circles 18 represent the rolling mill rolls. The central roller guide body is designated at l and the C- shaped holder is designated at 7. The rollers guiding the material to be rolled are designated at 5 and blade springs that support these rollers are designated at 4. A rocker or balance designated at 6 allows for the ali nment of the rollers 5 in the same horizontal plane without c angmg the average vertical position of the two rollers. Parts 1, 4, 5 and 6 are substantially equivalent to similar parts in previously known designs, and perform similar functions. For the sake of simplicity, the bearings for rollers 5, as well as channels for lubrication and cooling water have been eliminated from the drawing, as these are known in the art. Funnel shaped guide halves 19 leading the material to be rolled toward the rollers 5, are mounted inside the roller guide housing 1 in a known manner.
The C-shaped holder 7 is mounted on a base 13 by means of two bolts 15. The base 13 is mounted on a subbase 12, which is clamped to the rolling mill structure in a conventional manner.
Base 13 and the subbase 12 are connected via a dovetail 14 with mortise l6 and tenons 17 in such a way that the base 13 with holder 7 and roller guide body I is slideable parallel to the axis of the rolling mill rolls. The sliding motion can be controlled by a lead screw 20 in subbase 12, (FIG. 1) whereby exact lateral positioning of the roller guide becomes possible.
FIG. 2 shows how the C-shaped holder 7 is provided with grooves or mortises 8 at the top and bottom thereof into which tenons 9 arranged on the top and bottom of the central roller guide body slideably fit. A stop screw 2 and a corresponding anvil on the central roller guide body (see FIG. 1) determines how far. the central roller guidebody 1 can be pushed into the holder 7. A locking screw 3 can be tightened to retain the roller guide body 1 in its axial position inside the C-shaped holder 7.
The base portion 10 of the C-shaped holder 7 is provided with a keyway mating with a key as shown in FIG. 2 in the base 13. The key ll defines an exact lateral relationship between the C-shaped holder 7 and the base 13. By removing the screws 15 and turning the C-shaped holder 7 through the holder 7 can be remounted as shown in the right-hand portion ofFIG. 2.
In FIG. 2, the right-hand and the left-hand illustration shows how two roller guides according to the invention can be mounted in the same rolling mill stand so that both central roller guidebodies 1 are immediately adjacent to the roll chocks or window sides 21 of the particular rolling stand. Al-
ternatively, one single roller guide can be moved within a rolling mill stand from the extreme left-hand position to the extreme right-hand position by simply turning the C-shaped holder around when it interferes with the mill stand window 21.
FIG. 3 illustrates an additional advantage of the roller guide design according to the invention, whereby two roller guides can be arranged extremely close together without interference from the C-shaped holders 7.
Iclaim:
l. A roller guide comprising a roller guide body, having a top, a bottom and left and right sides, a holder for said roller guide body, and base means supporting said holder, said holder being substantiallyC-shaped to enclose the top and bottom and one side of said roller guide body, means for adjustably mounting said roller guide body axially in said holder, and means for mounting said holder on said base means, said last mentioned means accepting said holder in two opposite, reverse positions 180 apart.

Claims (1)

1. A roller guide comprising a roller guide body, having a top, a bottom and left and right sides, a holder for said roller guide body, and base means supporting said holder, said holder being substantially C-shaped to enclose the top and bottom and one side of said roller guide body, means for adjustably mounting said roller guide body axially in said hOlder, and means for mounting said holder on said base means, said last mentioned means accepting said holder in two opposite, reverse positions 180* apart.
