CHARLES H. MYERS, OF PHELPS, NEYV YORK.
NlGHT-THERMOMETER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 360,038, dated March 29, 1887.
(No model.)
To all whom, it may concern.-
Be it known that 1, CHARLES H. MYERs, a citizen of the United States, residing at Phelps, in the county of Ontario and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Thermometers, of which the following is a specification, reference being bad therein to the accompanying drawings.
This invention relates to improvements in thermometers, its object being to provide a thermometer in which the register may be easily read at night or in the dark. This I accomplish by coating the face of the sheet or plate forming the back of the thermometerframe with a luminous paint, the scale-marks and other characters or lines being printed thereon in opaque colors; or the background maybe opaque and the lines and characters luminous, the contrast between the opaque colors and luminous paint enabling the register to be easily read.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 represents a front view of what is known as a distanee-thermometer," and Fig. 2 a similarview of another form of thermometer to which my improvement may be applied.
In the said drawings, theletter A designates a sheet or plate of wood or other material, of any suitable size, coated with a luminous paint, and B a thermometertube of ordinary construction, secured thereto in any convenient manner. The said tube or plate, when the thermometer-tube is attached, is provided with a graduated scale, 0, similar to the scale in the ordinary thermometer. From the main divisions of such scale, or at points opposite the same, extend the lines E, which terminate at or neara figurescale formed on one or both sides of the scale-plate, said lines being shown as diverging in Fig. l and parallel in Fig. 2.
The scale marks, characters, or lines are printed in opaque colors, so that they will contrast with theluminousbackground, and may thus be rendered visible in the dark; or, as before stated, the lines, characters, and scale may be printed, painted, or otherwise produced by means of a luminous paint and the background opaque. In this latter instance it will be necessary to back the thermometer-tube with a stripe of luminous paint. This stripe may be either upon the tube itself or upon the back plate. \Vhen upon the tube, it should be backed by an opaque white to protect the luminous coating.
From the above it will be evident that the line of mercury in the tube will be visible in the dark by reason of the luminous background, and that the register may thus be easily read.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim is 1. A thermometer comprising a mercurial or spirit tube and a scale-plate having lines leading from the graduations upon or underneath the tube to a figurescale at the side, the pointer lines and scale and the background on which they are displayed being contrasted and rendered visible by painting either one in luminous paint and the other with an opaque color, substantially as described.
2. In a thermometer, the combination, with the tube, of an underlying stripe of luminous paint backed by opaque white to bring out the luminous quality and protect theluminous coating, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I atfix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
CHARLES H. MYERS.
\Vitnesses:
FRANK B. CURTIS, CHARLES E. HOBBY.
