PLOTTING DEVICE.
Application led February This invention relates to plotting devices.
More particularly the invention relates to a device for plotting, indicating or displaying in a diagramn'iatic manner certain conditions.
The principal object of the present invention is the provision of a device capable of being used in a court room for the benefit of court, counsel and jurymen in establishing or denying facts or points in the trial of a case. f
Another object of the invention is the provision of a device of the indicated character which may be made in different sizes and which Will be extensible When made in. a small size so as to adapt it to be carried about in a brief case for instance.
The nature of the invention and its distinguishing features and advantages Will appear When the following speciiication is read in connection with the accompanying drawings, in Which- Figure 1 is a plan vieW of the device of the present invention. y
Figure 2 is a bottom plan vievv of the de.- vice.
Figure 3 is a transverse sectional view taken on the line 3 3 of F ig. 1 and looking in the direction indicated by the arrows.
Figures 4 to 7 inclusive are fragments of dierent diagram-bearing sheets capable of being used optionally in association as partsr of the device. v
Figure 8 is a. collective vievv illustrating several types of indicia-bearing pasters for optional use in plotting.
Referring novv more particularly to the several views of the drawings, ityvill be apparent that, the plotting device of the presl ent invention will include a plate or plotting board 10 Which may be of any preferred material, size and shape. The said plate or plotting board 10 may be of one piece or may be made of sections. In the present instance the plate or plotting board 10 is made up of sections 11 and 12 which are relatively adjustable to render the plate or plotting board 10 extensible and also capable of being reduced in size. This Vis accomplished by providing the sections 12 with slots 13 in which are extended portions respectively of clamping elements 14. Plotting elements 15 are employed and in the present instance are arranged in pairs respectively on the sections 11 and 12. The said plotting elements are 5, 1926. Serial No. 86,276.
arranged over the plate or plotting board 10 and are adjustable With respect to the said plate or plotting board, and are adjustable with respect toeach other. Each of the plot.- ting elements comprises members 16 and 17 which are adjustable With respect to each other by virtue of clamping elements 18.
`The clamping elements 18 not only permit the relative adjustment of the members 16 and 17 to change their angular relationship, but serve to maintain said members in their adjusted angular relationship. Each member 17 of each plotting element 15 has a slot 19 therein. Each of the sections 11 and 12 is provided with slots 20. A clamping element 21 is employed in conjunction With each of the plotti-ng elements 15. A portion of the clamping element is extended in the slot 19 of the member 17 of the plotting element and is also extended in one of the slots 20, and in this Way the yplotting element Will be slidably and pivotally connected With 'its related plate 'section so Vas to be adjustable With respect to the plate or plotting board 10 and will also be adjustable with respectV to the other plotting elements 15. The members 16 and 17 of each of the plotting elements 15 has a graduated scale 22 for indicating accurately proportionate relative distances. l f
The plotting elements 15 in the present instance are intended to be adjusted with respect to each other to indicate or present in a diagrammatic manner substantially the correct relation of streetsor thoroughfares Which intersect each other. It is at once apparent, that the plotting elements 15 can be variously adjusted to indicate almost any condition of cross streets or thoroughfares and their comparative Widths respectively. Therefore inthe trial of a case between certain litigants it is possible for counsel to present certain conditions in a more realistic manner tothe court and jury, as regards street corners and the relation they' bear With respect to each other. vThis is found to be necessary in establishing or denying certain facts in the trial vof a case.
In order tomake provision for indicating other incidental conditions there is provided diagramfbearing means in the form` of sheets. In Figure 4 a portion 23 of one type of diagram-bearing sheet is shown upon Which are printed lines24 indicating double street car tracks which intersect each other. In
Figure 5 is shown a portion 25 of a sheet, the printed lines 26 of Which indicate a single car track. ln Figure 6 is shown a portion 27 ot a sheet, the printed lines 2S oi" which represent single street car tracks Which intersect each other. ln Figure the portion ot the sheet 29 has printed lines 30 Which represent double street car tracks parallel to each other. Obviously, divers other diagram-bearing sheets may be provided. The sheets may be used optionally in association with the plotting elements l5 AWhich will hold the saine over the plate or plotting board 10.
In order to indicate the location of other objects or persons, there are provided indiciabearing pieces which, advantageously, may be in t-he form ot' pasters 32. The said pasters 32 may be applied or attached to either the plate or plotting board l0, or diagram-bearing sheets, or members oit the plottiii'grelements 15, as the case may be, in accordance With testimony given in order to tix and establish certain conditions as a inatter of evidence.
In order to indicate direction'the plate or plotting board 10 is provided Wit-h a pointer 33 associated with a dial Bllwvhich bears indicia representing north, south, east, and West.
From the foregoing it will be. apparent that there has been described a plotting device by virtue of the features of which certain conditions incident to an accident such as an automobile or street car accident may be. presented in a comparatively realistic manner in the conduct ot a` trial; that opposing counsel may argue With each other to prove or disprove certain iacts, and that the conditions in simulation ot the real conditions may be photographed and preserved as a matter of record Without involving the usual loss-'of time and inconvenience.
We. claim:
l; A device ot the character described comprising a plate, and plotting elements each slidably connectedavith the plate so as to be adjustable With respect to said. plate, each of said plotting elements comprising meinbers pivotally connected together to permit changes in their angular relationship.
2. A device ot' the character described comprisiiig a plate, plotting elements each slid slidably andv pivotally connected with the,
plate so as to be adjustable With respect to said plate, each ofsaid `plotting elements comprising members pivotally connected togetherto permit changes in their angular relatioiiship, means tormaintaining the adjustment or' said plotting elements, and Ynieansjlior maintaining the angular relationship of said members.
ll. A. device et the character described coinyprising a plate, plotting elements arranged overl the plate and adjustable with respect to said plate and adjustable With vrespect to each other, and diagram-bcaring means connected With the plate adjacent said plotting elements to indicate the relationship ot certain. objects with respect to the plotting elements.
5. A device of the character dcscribedcoinprising a plate, plotting elements arranged over the plate and adjustable With respect to said plate and adjustable with respect toslidably and pivotally connected with the plate so as to be adjustable. with respect to. aid plate, each of said plotting elements.
comprising pivotally connected members,
each member of eacliof said plotting ele-r ments having a graduated, measuring scale.
8. A device of the character described comprising a plate, and plotting elements each slid-ably and pivotallj,T connected with the plate so as to be adjustable With respect to said v.pla-te, each of said plotting elements comprising members pivotally connectedl together to permit changes in their angular relationship.
9. A device of the character described comprising a pla-te consisting` of companion sections` and means` extensibly connectingsaid. sections together; plotting elements for each of said sections, feach of said plotting ele'- ments slidably and pivotally connected with itsrela-ted plate section so as to-be adjustable With respect thereto; each of said plotting elements comprising members pivotally connected together to. permit changes in their angular relationship, means for maintaining the adjustment of said plotting elementsarnd means for maintaining the angular relation-v ship of said members. l
