Description

W. H. GWYNNB. A MANUFACTURE 0F ILLUMINATING GAS.
No. 36,002. Patented Ju1y'29, 1862.
TM: Nonms vzrzns co. worauruu. wmusmn. u c
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
W. H. GWYNNE, OF WHITE PLAINS, NEW YORK.
` Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 36,00?, dated July 29, ISVQ.'
. To @ZZ whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, WV. H. GWYNNE, of NVhite Plains, in the county of Westchester and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Improvement in the Manufacture of Illuminating-Gas; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear,`and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, making a part of this specification, in which- Figure 1 represents a longitudinal vertical section of this invention, the line x m, Fig. 2,` indicating the plane of section. Fig. 2'is` a transverse vertical section'of the same taken in the plane indicated by the line y y, Fig. 1.
Similar letters of reference in both views indicate corresponding parts. p
This invention consists in introducing into a heated retort filled with c oal, wood, or other material from which illuminating-gas can be manufactured, a stream of petroleum or rock oil, in such a manner that by the action of the petroleum the quality of the gas for the purpose of illumination is improved, and a rich gas can be produced from the poorestkind ofV which illuminating-gas can be manufactured, v
and when the same, together with its charge,
is heated to a brightred heat a stream of pe'- troleum or rock oil is introduced through 4a pipe, D. Said pipe enters through the side of the mouth-piece of the retort close down to its bottom, and it extends back nearly through the entire length of the retort. Outside the retort it is bent in the form of asiphon, to prevent the gas escaping from the interior of the -retort, and it rises up to a tunnel-shaped mouth-piece, a, through which the petroleum may be conveniently introduced, or it may be made to communicate directly with a tank, the iiow of the liquid being regulated by a suitable stop-cock.
rIhe petroleum is discharged from the pipe on the coal or wood or other matcrialin the retort, saturates the same, and t-he gas produced in this manner is rich and of great illuminating power.
By the aid of this improvement poor coal or sawdust, or other material, which is generally considered unfit for t-he manufacture of illuminating-gas, or which, when used, produces gas of very inferior quality, can vbe used with advantage, and veryrich and good gas obtained. V
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
Introducing` into a retort containing coal,
w. H. GWYNNE.
