WILLIAM P. BATTEY, OF UTIGA, NEW YORK, AND WILLIAM TAYLOR,
OF PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA.
IMPROVEMENT IN GAS-RETORTS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 36,065, dated August 5, 1862.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, WILLIAM P. BATTEY, of the city of Utica, in the county of Oneida and State of New York, and WILLIAM N. TAY- LOR, of the city of Philadelphia, in the county of Philadelphia and State of Pennsylvania, have together invented a new Retort to be Used in the Manufacture of Gas from Petroleum-Oil;-and we do hereby declare the following to be a full and exact description of the same.
.The construction of the retort is shown on the drawings on Plate 1 and Plate 2 at A. It is cast open at both ends, aiid is divided into three or more chambers by horizontal partitions BB, extending lengthwise through it, as shown on the above-mentioned plates. The object of the chambers is to cause the oil from which the gas is made to pass through the length of the retort three or more times while thegas is being generated. The course the oil takes is shown on Plate 2. It enters at Gin the lower chamber, and takes the direction indicated through the chambers and-passes into the pipe at D. Both ends of the retort are closed by movable heads, made as shown at E, Plate 1, and said plates or heads are secured to the ends of the retort, as shown at F F, Plate 1. These heads have a-flange on the inside and a groove around near the edge which fits onto a tongue cast on the ends of the re-- tort and extending around them, as shown at H H, Plate 1.
Both ends of the retort are made alike, and the bottom and top sides of the retort are also made alike, so that when the retort has been used and its bottom side become worn or burned the retort can be taken out, and by turning it over and reversing its ends can be put back in its place and be used the same as when in its first position.
When reversed, as above mentioned, the opening I will be closed and a similar opening for the pipe K K, Plates 2 and 3, will be made in the circular plate L, (shown by dotted lines,) which, before reversion of the retort, was on the bottom side. I I Plates 3 and 4 show four retorts set up and connected with the balance of the apparatus used in making gas.
Plate 2 also shows a front view of a modification of my improved retort with its front plate removed.
What we claim as our invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1,.A gas-retort so constructed as to be capable of use in reversed position, substantially in the manner and for the purpose set forth.
2. In combination with the gas-retort'A, the removable heads F, substantially in'the manner and for the purpose set forth.
3. The use of two or more chambers, in com-,
bination with a gas-retort constructed substantially in the manner and for the purpose set forth.
