Spem'ficntio n fornn'ng part of Letters talent No. 35,949, datedJuly' 22,
.-Be it known that I,
invented a new and useful Improvement in I Making Cartridges for Fire-Arms; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact being bad to the accompanying drawings, making a part of this specification, in which- Figure 1 represents a cartridge made of pressed powder, covered with collodion, and the cake of powder further-,securedto the ball by a belt of collodion. Fig. 2 represents, in
sect-ion, the pressed powder, not incased, but
secured to the ball by the collodion belt. Fig. 3 represents, in section, the collodion case and the beltboth. Fig. 4 represents a cross-section through the cartridge. I
I am aware that a collodion covering has been used in a cartridge; and I am also aware that pressed powder for a. cartridge has been used. I do not, therefore, claim either There is a class of cartridges, however, viz,
those in which a loose plug is inserted in the hcel'of the ball for the purpose of expanding it by the force of theexplosion', with which it is diflicult to use pressed powder, because the pressed powder cannot be unitedto' the ball by any of the hitherto also so uniting or sticking the plug as to destroyits usefulness.
. My invention ispeculiarly applicable to the kind of cartridges above described, while for uniting pressed powder to any other kind of a ball it is very useful and valuable ;-and my invention consists in uniting pressed powder to a ball .by running a 'collodion belt or zone.
around the joint or union between the powder 1 and theball, and extending over onto each description of-the same, reference with the edges of the known wayswithout.
hatlclaimis v I suliicieutly far to firmly hold them together against the accidents oi: transportation. or
handling.
To enable others skilled in the art to make and nse'my invention, 1 .will proceed to describe the same with reference to the drawings.
A represents an ordinary Minie ball, and B a. cake of pressed powder united thereto by a belt or zone of collodion, a. In Figs. 1, 3, and t the cake of powder is-represented as co. ered'by collodion entirely, but as also secured by the belt or-zone a, while in Fig. 2 the cake of pressed powder is held to the ball by the kett e sinus. th e ng 31 0 covering tqthg pressed powder.
In some cart-ridgesa plug of wood or-other material is placed loosely in the cavityat the heel of the ball, and to unite pressed powder to such a ball, leaving the plugloose so that it may be driven up by the discharge to expnndthe heel of the ball, is a delicate operation. My plan of using the collodion belt or zonemakes it perfectly practicableyand very. easily accomplished. The plug being placed.
in the cavity of the ball, the cake of pressed powder is, ormay be, 'broughtinto contact ball, leavingthe plug loose, and while held there the collodion is run around with a brush, and but a 'few moments'iare-required tomake them rigid enough to withstand Lallj ordinary hand ling.
Uni ting solid or press (1 powder to a ball by a belt or zone of collodion, in the manner and for the purpose substantially as described.
