Abstract

The end frame of the reel is made up of pairs of reel arms which are secured by a centrally located pin. The pin projects from the end frame so as to be slidably mounted in the spacer bar. The hook-containing sections radiate from the pin while the corrugated ribs of each section abut the pin so as to create a rigid structure against bending and skewing. The reel arms can be made of one piece or of three separate pieces coined together. The pin can be circular so as to rotate the frame in the spacer bar or square so as to prevent rotation.

Accordingly, various types of frames generally-referred to as reels have been used to transport pile fabrics in a manner so as to avoid damage. These reels have generally been made of a pair of spaced end frames and a spacer means between the end frames which is of a length substantially equal to the width of fabric being wound for holding the end frames apart. The end frames have frequently been formed at a central area with various types of sockets and clamping devices to facilitate securement to the spacer means. In some instances, these .end frames require securing elements such as bolts, nuts, rivets, etc. and corresponding openings in order to be fixed to the spacer means. In other instances, the end frames have had pairs of reel arms which meet at points offset from the center of the end frames such that any bending of a reel arm causes not only a bending stress in the reel arm but also a twisting stress due to the offset from the center of the end frame.
These heretofore used reels and end frames have thus been subjected to various disadvantages. For example, where the end frames are permanently secured to the spacer means, the
reels have taken up a great deal of space'in transporting the empty reels to a pile fabric supplier. Also, where the end frames are provided with securing devices, time and manipulative effort have to be spentin fixing the securing devices onto the end-frame during fabrication as'well as duringmounting on a spacer means. Further, where the endframes are to be mounted on a spacer means, such as a wood bar, it is required that the bar not be warped as otherwise undue stresses can occur in the frame during reeling on of a pile fabric as well as during transportation such as to skew the frames to allow layers of the fabric to fall from the respective hooks with consequent damage.
Briefly, the invention provides a reel which is constructed to support a reeled-on pile fabric or the like in fixed manner. The reel is of such rigidity and strength as to maintain the layers of pile fabric under a desired tension such that the fabric layers do not become crushed or matted during transportation or storage. v
The invention also provides an end frame for construction of the reel which is made in a manner to be readily mounted on a suitable spacer means while possessing characteristics of strength and rigidity. The end frame in one embodiment is constructed from a pair of one-piece reel arms and a pin. Each reel arm'which is initially flat is bent about two points to form a triangular shape such that the end sections which contain fabric impaling hooks form radiating arms while the intermediate section stiffens the radiating arms against skewing and bending. The bent reel arms are secured together by the single pin to form an end frame with four hook-containing arms radiating from the center of the endframe. To this end,
the pin passes through overlapping flanges in the ends of the reel arms and is deformed in the manner of a rivet to permanently secure the reel arms together.
In order to further impart rigidity to the end frame, a corrugated rib is formed on each end of a reel arm to abut the pin such that inward bending of the the pin.
In another embodiment, the end frame is dimensioned so that the securing pin extends out of the plane of the reel arms. This permits the pin to be inserted within a mating bore of a spacer means in a simple manner. In one instance, the pin and bore are circular in cross section so as to permit rotation of the end frame in the spacer means. While this allows the end radiating arms is impeded by frames at the ends of the spacer means to be easily placed in alignment, such also allows a warped length of material to be used for the spacer means. In another instance, the pin and bore are rcctangularly shaped or otherwise polygonal so as to prevent relative rotation.
In still another embodiment, the securing pin is dimensioned to remain within the plane of the reel arms while a mounting plate is secured by the pin to the reel arms for mounting on a spacer means. In this embodiment, the mounting plate is provided with a means, such as a plurality of projecting circumferentially spaced tabs, for engaging with the interior of a tubular spacer means, such as a paper tube. Further, the spacer means and reel arms can be so dimensioned that the tubular spacer means is received with an inter ference fit between a pair of opposed hook-containing sections of each end frame.
In still another embodiment, the reel arms of each end frame can be formed of three pieces. In this case, the intermediate section is initially separate from the hook-containing sections. In order to secure the sections together, pairs of holes are formed nearthe adjoining ends of the secton for registering over each other; the holes in the overlying section being smaller than the underlying holes. The overlying section is then deformed about the holes to pass into the holes of the underlying section and to lock the sections together. The remainder of the end frame is similar to the above embodiment.
In other embodiments, in order to prevent rotation of the end frame relative to the spacer means, the end frames are provided with sharp points for digging into the spacer means or where the spacer means is not compatible to such, a separate lock plate is mounted on the end frame for receiving the spacer means in a geometric locking relation.
Also, in still another embodiment, in order to fix an end frame in a longitudinal position relative to the spacer means, a lock nut is mounted on the pin to prevent further movement of the pin into the spacer means after a fabric has been impaled on the reel and placed under tension.
Accordingly, it is an object of the invention to removably mount an end frame on a spacer means in a simple reliable manner.
It is another object of the invention to form an end frame of a reel with a minimum of parts.
It is another object of the invention to fabricate an end frame of a reel in a minimum of time with a minimum of manipulative effort.
It is another object of the invention to provide an end frame with radially directed arms.
It is another object of the invention to provide an end frame for a reel which can be transported in quantity within a minimum ofspace.
It is another object of the invention to provide an end frame for a reel which is easily handled in the assembling ofa reel.
It is another object of the invention to provide a pile fabric reel which is stable against bending and twisting.
These and other objects and advantages of the invention will become more apparent from the following detailed description and appended claims taken in conjunction with the accompanying drawings in which:

Referring to FIG. 1, a pile fabric reel 15 is formed by a pair I of end frames 16 and a spacer bar 17 mounted at the end on the end frames 16. Each of the end frames 16 is provided with inwardly disposed fabric-impaling hooks 18 to receive and hold a web of pile fabric 19 in a convoluted condition and is held in spaced relation to the other end frame by the spacer bar 17 to hold the pile fabric 19 under tension. The end frames 16 are constructed by pairs of reel arms 20 which are held together by a single round pin 21 positioned at the centers of the end frames 16 on the axis of the reel 15 and which projects out of the plane of the reel arm. Each reel arm 20 is of a onepiece strip of suitable material, such as strip steel, and is shaped into a triangular shape.
Referring to FIGS. 2 and 7, each reel arm 20 is made from a flat strip of material which is cut out in the manner as shown in FIG. 7. The reel arm 20 has an intermediate stiffener section 22 and a pair of hook-containing end sections 23, 23. The intermediate section 22 has a flat portion 24 from which a first flange 25 at one edge is folded over and a second flange 26 on the opposite edge is folded over and bent to extend at an inclined angle (FIG. 4). The end sections 23, 23' each have a flat portion 27, 27 which is an extension of the flat portion 24 of the intermediate section 22 from which a flange 28, 28 is bent to extend perpendicularly. One end section 23, however, has an aperture 29 formed in the flange 28 while the other end section 23 has an extended flat portion 27 and an aperture 30 in the flange 28. The apertures 29, 30 are of the same diameter and are positioned in the flanges 28, 28' so that when the end sections 23, 23 are bent to form an included angle of 90, the apertures 29, 30 are in registry with each other. In addition, the flange 28 has a pair of openings 31 therein which are fonned by stamping out a pair of depending tangs 32. The openings 31 and tangs 32 are spaced symmetrically about the aperture 30 so that upon overlapping of the reel arms 20 (FIG. 2) the tangs 32 of one reel arm fit into the openings 31 of the other reel arm. This increases the stability of the completed end frame against rotation of the reel arms about the pin 21. Also, each flat portion 27, 27' has an inclined flange 33, 33 on the opposite edge from which a plurality of hooks 18, and a corrugated rib 34, 34' extends, as shown. Each rib 34, 34' is fonned with a slightly rounded edge 35, 35' so as to abut the surface of the pin 21 in place. The hooks 18 of each end section 23 are of L-shape and are directed towards the hooks of the other end section 23.
The flanges 25, 26, 28, 28' of the reel arm 20 are formed with inclined ends, e.g. of about 22%", so as to permit bending of the end sections 23, 23' at 45 angles to the intermediate section 22 when forming the reel arm 20 into a triangular shape. Alternatively, instead of forming a squared configuration, the reel arms can have the end sections bent on any suita ble angle to form a rectangularly configured end frame.
Referring to FIG. 2, in order to assemble an end frame 16, a pair of reel arms 20 are bent into a triangular shape. In this regard, each reel arm 20 is bent, for example, manually, so that the end sections 23, 23 are bent at a 45 angle to the intermediate section 22 with the flanges 28, 28 in overlapping relation. The apertures 29, 30 are also brought into alignment with each other at this time. Next, the pair of reel arms 20 .are positioned with the respective apertures 29, 30 of each in registry and with the tangs 32 ofonc received in the openings 31 of the other. The pin 21 is then passed through the apertures. To this end, the pin 21 has a rounded head 36 sized to pass through the apertures 29, 30 and an enlarged body portion 37 of larger dimension than the apertures 29, 30 to abut against the innermost flange 28'. The exposed head 36 of the pin 21 is then deformed, as by peening, to lock the reel arms 20 together. The reel arms 20 are thus secured at a central point so that the end sections 23, 23' of each radiate from a single point.
Alternatively, the end frames 16 can be assembled by first inserting the head 36 of the pin 21 into the flange 28' of one reel arm, thereafter placing the flange 28' of the other reel arm over the first flange 28 to pass the tangs 32 of the second flange 28 into the openings 31 of the first flange 28' and over the pin head 36, then bending this latter reel arm into a triangular shape to pass the other flange 28 over the pin head 36, and finally bending the first reel arm into a triangular shape to pass the remaining flange 28 over the pin head 36. The head 36 is then deformed, as above, to lock the reel arms together.
Referring to FIG. 3, the body 37 of the pin 21 which is of a cylindrical shape is abutted by the rounded edges of the corrugated ribs 34 of the reel arms 20 such that the hook-containing sections 23, 23' are stiffened against bending inwardly of the reel 15. Alternatively, the body of the pin 21 can be of a rectangular cross section while the edges 35, 35' of the corrugated ribs 34, 34' are flat to abut the surface of the pin. In addition, the flanges 28' of the reel arms 20 overlap each other while the extended flat portions 27' of the reel arms 20 extend past opposite sides of the pin 21 to further stiffen the end frame 16 against bending and twisting. Since the flanges 28 of the remaining end sections 23 are secured to the end of the pin 21, these end sections 23 are pivoted relative to the pin 21 about the flanges 28. However, the corrugated ribs 34 are extended slightly past the flat portions 24 so that when the fabric 19 is impaled on the hooks 18 of the end frames 16, the end sections 23 are pivoted towards the pin 21 to abut the corrugated ribs 34 against the pin 21.
Referring to FIGS. 5 and 6, the pin 21 of each end frame 16 is sized to slidably fit within a bore 38 of the spacer bar 17 and to penetrate into the bore 38 to bring the spacer bar 17 into abutment with the flat surface 39 of at least one of the corrugated ribs 34, 34'. When mounted on the spacer bar 17, each end frame 16 is allowed to rotate so that the end frames can be rotated into alignment with each other before reeling on of a pile fabric.
Referring to FIG. 8, in order to allow the end frames 16 of the reel to move outwardly of the spacer bar 17 so as to tension the fabric, an apertured plate 40 with inwardly facing flanges 41 such as a Tinnerman speed nut is mounted on the pin 21 with the flanges 41 directed away from the spacer bar 17. In use, after the end frames 16 are mounted on the spacer bar 17 and the fabric 19 reeled thereon, each plate 40 is moved along the respective pin 21 against the spacer bar 17. Thereafter, the end frames 16 are withdrawn slightly from the spacer bar 17 while the plate 40 is held against the spacer bar. The flanges 41 allow withdrawal of the pin 21 but restrain insertion of the pin 21 back into the bore 38.
In order to prevent relative rotation between the spacer bar and end frames the respective pins of each end frame can be made rectangular in cross section while the bores in the spacer bar are similarly dimensioned. Also, referring to FIG. 9, a lock plate 42 can be mounted between the spacer bar 17 and an end frame (not shown) to prevent relative rotation. The lock plate 42 is square in shape and is provided with slots 43 at the corners to fit around the innermost upstanding hooks 18 (FIG. 6) of the end frame reel arms while resting against the innermost corrugated rib of the end frame. Additionally, the lock plate 42 is provided with a square aperture at the center to fit around the spacer bar 17 in a geometric locking relation and outstanding tongues 45 to resiliently grip the surfaces of the spacer bar 17.
Referring to FIG. 10, the end frames can also be held against rotating relative to the spacer bar 17 by forming sharp projecting points 46 on the corrugated ribs 34 and causing these sharp points to dig into the spacer bar 17.
Referring to FIGS. 11 and 12, each reel arm 50 of an end frame 51 can be made from three pieces rather than one piece as above. To this end, each reel arm 50 is formed with a pair of hookcontaining sections 52 which are disposed radially of the center of the end frame and a stiffener section 53 which is secured across the free ends of the hook-containing sections 52. Each hook-containing section 52 is formed with hooks 18 (shown in dashed lines), a flat portion 54 and a perpendicular stiffening flange 55. In addition, a pair of circular holes 56 are formed near the free end of each hook-containing section 52. Each stiffener section 53 is formed, as above, with a flat portion 57 and a dependent perpendicular flange 58 and an inclined flange 61. Also, the plate portion 57 is extended at both ends and bent inwardly in the direction of the flange 58 to form a pair of tabs 59. Each tab 59 is provided with a pair of circular holes 60 of smaller diameter than the holes 56 in the hook-containing sections 52.
Referring to FIGS. 13 and 14, in order to secure the stiffener section 53 to the hook-containing sections, the tabs 59 is positioned above the free end of the hook-containing section 52 to align the holes 56, 60. Next the material of the stiffener section about the holes 60 is deformed, as by coining, intothe holes 56 (FIG. 14) so as to lock the stiffener section 53 to the hook-containing sections 52. The sections 52, 53 can then be bent into a triangular shape and manipulated as above with respect to a pin 21 to form the end frame 51.
Referring to FIG. 13, in order to enhance the rigidity of the end frame 51, the flange 55 of each section 52 is provided with an inclined edge 62 of about 45 so as to overlap the flange 58 of the stiffener section 53. The edges of the flange 58 are similarly sloped to abut the flat portion 54 of a respective section 52. The interfitting relation of the ends of each section 52 with the respective stiffener section 53 thus imparts rigidity to the end frame 51 against twisting.
It is noted that the several intermediate sections 22 (FIG. 1) and stiffener sections 53 (FIG. 11) are formed with an inclined folded over flange so as to present a smooth surface for manual grasping of the respective end frames. This militates against injury to the personnel handling the frames.
Referring to FIGS. and 16, wherein like parts are indicated by like reference numerals as above, instead of extending the pin from the end frame for mounting of the spacer bar, a mounting plate 63 for mounting a spacer tube 64 is mounted on each end frame 65 by means of a pin 66. The mounting plate 63 is formed of polygonal shape and has a keying slot 67 which is sized to key the plate 63 to one of the hooks of a hook-containing section of the end frame 65. Also, the mounting plate 63 includes three depressed lips 68, which are of increasing depth to rest on the corrugated ribs 34 of the remaining hook-containing sections of the reel arms so as to align the plate axis with the axis of the end frame 65. That is, as the hook-containing sections of the end frame 65 are disposed in a stepped manner, the depressed lips 68 compensate for the difference in spacing between the corrugated ribs 34 and the body of the mounting plate 63. A plurality of tabs 69 for example, four, are also formed out of the mounting plate 63 to extend in a direction opposite the lips 68. The tabs 69 are spaced circumferentially to fit and engage within the bore of the spacer tube 64 which is made of any suitable material such as paper. In order to facilitate positioning of the spacer tube 64 on the mounting plate 63, the tabs 69 are inclined slightly inwardly. Further, a raised bead 70 is'forrned centrally of the plate 63 about an aperture 71 through which the pin 66 passes. The raised bead provides a cushioning surface against which the end 72 of the pin 66 is splaycd over.
in order to form the end frame 65, the mounting plate 63 and four respective hook-containing sections 23 are mounted over a spring mounted pin of an anvil. Next, the pin 66, for example, in the form ofa common semitubular rivet, is passed through the hook-containing sections 23 and mounting plate 23 against the anvil pin to drive the anvil pin into the interior of the anvil. Upon passing of the pin 66 through the mounting plate 63, the anvil pin reaches a stop so that continued movement of the pin 66 causes the end 72 to splay outwardly about the bead 70 under the guidance of the anvil contour. The mounting plate 63 is thus secured to the reel arms.
In order to mount the spacer tube 64 on an end frame 65, the tube 64 is forced over the tabs 69 and held in place frictionally. In addition, in order to further secure the spacer tube 64 in place, the innermost hooks of a pair of oppositely disposed hook-containing sections are spaced apart to receive the spacer tube 64 with an' interference fit.
The invention thus provides an end frame which can be easily and quickly mounted on a spacer bar while also providing a rigid structure against bending and twisting forces. in this latter regard, it is noted that the several hook-containing sections radiate from a central pin which is on the axis of the reel. Thus, any inward bending forces on these sections creates substantially only a bending stress in the sections while forcing the section against the pin.
It is also noted that since the end frames can be rotatably mounted with respect to the spacer bar so as to be adjusted thereto, any warp in the spacer bar can be compensated by rotation of one of the end frames. Further, the spacer bar can be of various outer dimensions since it is only necessary to have the pins or tabs of the end frame fit into the bores of the spacer bar.
The end frame of the invention is made of a minimum of parts which are easily assembled in a minimum of time. Once assembled, the end frames can be transported in quantity within a minimum of space and subsequently assembled into a reel with the use of any suitable spacer bar of relatively inexpensive material.
What I claim is:
1. An end frame for a reel comprising a centrally located pin;
a plurality of hook-containing sections for impaling a fabric material thereon secured to said pin and radiating outwardly of said pin; and
a plurality of stiffener sections, each stiffener section being secured to the ends of a pair of said hook-containing sections.
2. An end frame as set forth in claim 1 wherein said pin is circular in cross section.
3. An end frame as set forth in claim 1 wherein each stiffener section is integral with a pair of said hook-containing sections whereby each said pair of hook-containing sections and integral stiffener section is formed from a flat one-piece strip of material.
4. An end frame as set forth in claim 1 wherein each stiffener section has a pair of holes at each end and each of said pair of hook-containing sections has a pair of holes at one end in registry with the holes of said stiffener section, said stiffener section being deformed about the holes therein into the holes of each hook-containing section in locking relation.
5. An end frame as set forth in claim 1 which further comprises a mounting plate disposed between said hook-containing sections, said pin passing through said mounting plate to secure said mounting plate to said hook-containing sections, said mounting plate including means for engaging a spacer bar.
6. An end frame as set forth in claim 5 wherein said means includes a plurality of circumferentially spaced tabs projecting from said mounting plate.
7. An end frame as set forth in claim 6 wherein said tabs are inclined inwardly towards the projected axis of said pin.
8 An end frame as set forth in claim 1 wherein said pin extends out of the plane of said hook-containing sections, and wherein each hook-containing section includes a corrugated rib at one end for abutting said pin.
9. An end frame as set forth in claim 1 wherein each stiffener section has a flat portion, a first folded over flange along one side thereon, and a folded over flange extending at an inclined angle therefrom for forming a gripping surface.
10. An end frame as set forth in claim 1 wherein each hookcontaining section includes a flat portion and a flange extending perpendicularly therefrom each flange having an aperture therein passed through by said pin whereby said pin secures said hook-containing sections together in overlapping relation.
II. An end frame as set forth in claim 10 wherein each said flange ofa pair of oppositely aligned hook-containing sections further includes a pair of depending tangs and a pair of openings adjacent said tangs on opposite sides of said aperture and said pin, said tangs of one of said hook-containing sections passing into said openings of the other of said hook-containing sections.
12. An end frame for a fabric reel comprising a pair of reel arms of triangular configuration, each of said reel arms containing a pair of hook-containing sections directed radially outwardly of an axis of the end frame for impalin g a fabric material thereon;
a mounting plate disposed between said hook-containing sections, said mounting plate including a plurality of circumferentially spaced tabs directed substantially parallel to said axis for engaging a spacer tube; and
a pin means passing through the ends of said hook-containing sections and mounting plate parallel to said axis to secure said ends together in overlapping relation.
13. An end frame as set forth in claim 12 wherein said mounting plate includes a plurality of depressed portions, each depressed portion being mounted over a respective one of said hook-containing sections to support said mounting plate in a plane parallel to the plane of said hook-containing sections.
14. An end frame as set forth in claim 12 wherein said mounting plate includes a means keying said mounting plate to at least one of said hook-containing sections to prevent rotation of said mounting plate relative to said hook-containing sections.
15. A reel for pile fabrics comprising a spacer bar having a circular bore in each end; and
a pair of end frames, each said end frame including a cenlrally located circular pin slidably received in a bore of said spacer bar to allow relative rotation between said end frames and said spacer bar, a plurality of hook-containing sections for impaling a pile fabric thereon fixedly secured to said pin and radiating outwardly of said pin and said spacer bar, and a plurality of stiffener sections, each stiffener section being secured to the ends of a pair of said hook-containing sections.
16. A reel as set forth in claim 15 wherein said pin is secured to said hook-containing sections on the side of said end frames opposite said spacer bar.
17. A reel as set forth in claim 15 which further includes a lock nut on each said pin for preventing penetration of said pin into the respective bore of said spacer bar.
18. A reel as set forth in claim 15 which further includes a' lock plate mounted on each said end frame and receiving said spacer bar in geometric locking relation.
19. A reel as set forth in claim 18 wherein said lock plate includes a plurality of slots therein, each slot receiving a portion of a hook-containing section therein.
20. A reel as set forth in claim 15 wherein each hook containing section includes a tab having a sharp corner thereon penetrated into said spacer bar to restrain said end frames against relative rotation with respect to said spacer bar.
21. A reel for pile fabrics comprising a pair of end frames, each of said frames including a plurality of radially directed hook-containing sections for impaling a fabric thereon, a mounting plate secured between said hook-containing sections and including a plurality of circumferentially spaced tabs, said tabs projecting towards the other of said end frames;
a pin passing axially of the reel through said sections and said mounting plate of each end frame to secure said sections together and to said mounting plate and a spacer tube slidably engaged over said tabs to maintain said end frames in spaced relation to each other.
22. A reel as set forth in claim 21 wherein said spacer tube is made of paper.
23. A reel as set forth in claim 21 wherein said spacer tube is received between at least one pair of oppositely disposed hook-containing sections of each end frame with an interference fit.

Claims (22)

1. An end frame for a reel comprising a centrally located pin; a plurality of hook-containing sections for impaling a fabric material thereon secured to said pin and radiating outwardly of said pin; and a plurality of stiffener sections, each stiffener section being secured to the ends of a pair of said hook-containing sections.
2. An end frame as set forth in claim 1 wherein said pin is circular in cross section.
3. An end frame as set forth in claim 1 wherein each stiffener section is integral with a pair of said hook-containing sections whereby each said pair of hook-containing sections and integral stiffener section is formed from a flat one-piece strip of material.
4. An end frame as set forth in claim 1 wherein each stiffener section has a pair of holes at each end and each of said pair of hook-containing sections has a pair of holes at one end in registry with the holes of said stiffener section, said stiffener section being deformed about the holes therein into the holes of each hook-containing section in locking relation.
5. An end frame as set forth in claim 1 which further comprises a mounting plate disposed between said hook-containing sections, said pin passing through said mounting plate to secure said mounting plate to said hook-containing sections, said mounting plate including means for engaging a spacer bar.
6. An end frame as set forth in claim 5 wherein said means includes a plurality of circumferentially spaced tabs projecting from said mounting plate.
7. An end frame as set forth in claim 6 wherein said tabs are inclined inwardly towards the projected axis of said pin. 8 An end frame as set forth in claim 1 wherein said pin extends out of the plane of said hook-containing sections, and wherein each hook-containing section includes a corrugated rib at one end for abutting said pin.
9. An end frame as set forth in claim 1 wherein each stiffener section has a flat portion, a first folded over flange along one side thereon, and a folded over flange extending at an inclined angle therefrom for forming a gripping surface.
10. An end frame as set forth in claim 1 wherein each hook-containing section includes a flat portion and a flange extending perpendicularly therefrom each flange having an aperture therein passed through by said pin whereby said pin secures said hook-containing sections together in overlapping relation.
11. An end frame as set forth in claim 10 wherein each said flange of a pair of oppositely aligned hook-containing sections further includes a pair of depending tangs and a pair of openings adjacent said tangs on opposite sides of said aperture and said pin, said tangs of one of said hook-containing sections passing into said openings of the other of said hook-containing sections.
12. An end frame for a fabric reel comprising a pair of reel arms of triangular configuration, each of said reel arms containing a pair of hook-containing sections directed radially outwardly of an axis of the end frame for impaling a fabric material thereon; a mounting plate disposed between said hook-containing sections, said mounting plate including a plurality of circumferentially spaced tabs directed substantially parallel to said axis for engaging a spacEr tube; and a pin means passing through the ends of said hook-containing sections and mounting plate parallel to said axis to secure said ends together in overlapping relation.
13. An end frame as set forth in claim 12 wherein said mounting plate includes a plurality of depressed portions, each depressed portion being mounted over a respective one of said hook-containing sections to support said mounting plate in a plane parallel to the plane of said hook-containing sections.
14. An end frame as set forth in claim 12 wherein said mounting plate includes a means keying said mounting plate to at least one of said hook-containing sections to prevent rotation of said mounting plate relative to said hook-containing sections.
15. A reel for pile fabrics comprising a spacer bar having a circular bore in each end; and a pair of end frames, each said end frame including a centrally located circular pin slidably received in a bore of said spacer bar to allow relative rotation between said end frames and said spacer bar, a plurality of hook-containing sections for impaling a pile fabric thereon fixedly secured to said pin and radiating outwardly of said pin and said spacer bar, and a plurality of stiffener sections, each stiffener section being secured to the ends of a pair of said hook-containing sections.
16. A reel as set forth in claim 15 wherein said pin is secured to said hook-containing sections on the side of said end frames opposite said spacer bar.
17. A reel as set forth in claim 15 which further includes a lock nut on each said pin for preventing penetration of said pin into the respective bore of said spacer bar.
18. A reel as set forth in claim 15 which further includes a lock plate mounted on each said end frame and receiving said spacer bar in geometric locking relation.
19. A reel as set forth in claim 18 wherein said lock plate includes a plurality of slots therein, each slot receiving a portion of a hook-containing section therein.
20. A reel as set forth in claim 15 wherein each hook containing section includes a tab having a sharp corner thereon penetrated into said spacer bar to restrain said end frames against relative rotation with respect to said spacer bar.
21. A reel for pile fabrics comprising a pair of end frames, each of said frames including a plurality of radially directed hook-containing sections for impaling a fabric thereon, a mounting plate secured between said hook-containing sections and including a plurality of circumferentially spaced tabs, said tabs projecting towards the other of said end frames; a pin passing axially of the reel through said sections and said mounting plate of each end frame to secure said sections together and to said mounting plate and a spacer tube slidably engaged over said tabs to maintain said end frames in spaced relation to each other.
22. A reel as set forth in claim 21 wherein said spacer tube is made of paper.
23. A reel as set forth in claim 21 wherein said spacer tube is received between at least one pair of oppositely disposed hook-containing sections of each end frame with an interference fit.
