FARE BOX. No. 359,346. Patented Mar. '15, 1887.

UNITED STATES PATEN'I OFFICE.
JOHN SINGLE'IARY OAIERS, OF NEW ORLEANS, LOUISIANA.
FARE-BOX.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 359,346, dated March 15, 1887,
Application filed May .10, 1886. Serial No. 202,782. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, JOHN SINGLETARY CAPERS, a citizen of the United States of America, residingat New Orleans,in the parish of Orleans and State of Louisiana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Fare-Boxes, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings.
The object of my invention is to combine with a fare-box for streetcars and the like means whereby at the insertion of each fare a bell in circuit with an electric battery is caused to sound, and at the same time a perforation is made by means of a needle in a registerstrip contained within the box and fed automatically from the roller upon which it is wound with each inward movement of the flap-door covering the inlet-opening.
In the accompanying drawings, illustrative of my invention, Figure 1 represents a front interior View of my fare-box,partly in section. Fig. 2 represents a side interior view, also partly in section.
Similar letters of reference indicate similar parts.
, The main body of the fare-box is of the ordinary construction, provided with the receiving-drawer O, and pivoted drop M, and glasscovered inspection-opening T. At its upper portion is located the spool or drum B, upon which is wound the paper strip 0. This strip passes between feed-rollers D E, and a receptacle,S,is provided for receiving it from said rollers. The feed-rollers are provided with theintermeshing cogs R R,and the lower one, E, with the ratchet-teeth E. To the rear of the flap I, covering the inlet-opening of the farebox, are connected the rack H, engaging with the ratchet E, and the needle perforator F,
supported at its inner end upon the cross-bar G. A bell, A, in circuit with the battery Q, is located at the top of the box. The circuit is normally open, the metal contacts J K, one of which is attached to the flap I and the other to the receptacle S, being separated when the flap hangs in its ordinary position covering the inlet-opening.
The operation of my invention is as follows: When a fare is inserted, flap I is pushed inward until contact is made between J and K, thereby closing the battery-circuit and ringing the bell. At the same time the rack-bar H engages with the teeth of the ratchet E and revolves the roller E, which in turn, by means of the cogs R R, revolves the roller D in an opposite direction, thereby feeding off the strip 0 for a definite length from the drum B. At the termination of this feeding movement the needle perforator F strikes the strip and punctures a small hole init, thereby registering the fare.
I am aware that it is not broadly new to arrange a bell in circuit so as tobe rung at the insertion of a fare, and I do not broadly claim such as my invention; but
What I do claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
I. In a fare'box provided with an inletopening, the combination, with theflap-door I, having the needle perforator F and rack-bar H attached thereto, of the feed-rollers D E, having the intermeshing cogs R It and ratchetwheel E, the paper strip a, and the drum B, substantially as described.
2. In a fare-box provided with an inletopening, the combination, with the bell A,eonductor P, and battery Q, of the flap-door 'I, having the contact J, the paper strip, needle perforator, and the receptacle S, having the contact K, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
JOHN SINGLEIARY OAPERS.
Witnesses:
HENRY J. RHODES, GEORGE J. YENEWINE.
