NECK-WEAR Tip.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 359,209, dated March 8, 1887.
Application filed November 9.9, 1886. Serial No. 220,157. (No model.)
To aZZ whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, J. llIURRAY GUILBERT, a citizen of the United States, residing in the city and county of Philadelphia, State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Improvement in NeekWVear Tips, which improvement is fully set forth in the following specification and accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 represents a side elevation of a neck-wear tip el'nbodying my invention, the same being shpwn in position on the article of neckwvear, the latter being illustrated by dotted lines. Fig. 2 represents an edge view thereof. Fig. 3 represents a section thereof in line as Fig. 1, 011 an enlarged scale. Fig. 4 represents a manner of forming the tips.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in the several figures.
My invention consists of a neck-wear tip constructed of a piece of flexible material stiffened by pieces of material on the sides thereof, whereby the same is strong, light, inexpensive, and durable, and may be doubleended.
Referring to the drawings, A represents atip attachable to the end of the neckband of an article of neck-wear or to the lining of such band, the same being adapted to guide the end of the neclzband through the opening in the body of said article, the latter being generally known as aneckscarf.
The tip is formed of two pieces, B, of chauneled sheet metal or other material, which constitute the sides of-the tip, and a central piece or filling, C, of paper, pasteboard, cardboard, paper-stock, or other material, of sufficiently strong and flexible nature, said filling being fitted within the channels of the side pieces, B, and clinched by the same, thus firmly connecting the several pieces, and forming a tip which is strong, light, inexpensive, and durable.
The filling G, when made of paper or paper material, avoids the manufacture of thetip en 5 tirely of metal, thus decreasing the weight. and reducing the expense of the tip, said filling, though of a flexible nature, being stiffened and strengthened by the side pieces, B; but I do not limit myself to paper or paper material, as other material may be used for my purpose.
In lieu of clinching the side pieces to the central piece, pasting, gunnning, or other means of fastening the same may be adopted. The outer edges of the tip are rounded by the bends of the side pieces, whereby they are prevented from cutting through the fabric of the neckband and body of the scarf.
The present construction of the tip also adapts the same to be made in long pieces or strips, which are cut in desired lengths or sections, as seen in Fig. 4, the ends of the sections being perforated or pierced as means of attachment of the tips. to the nechband or neckband lining, and each tip is doubleo5 ended, so that either end is adapted to occupy the forward end of the neckband.
I am aware that neck-wear tips have been variously constructed, and do not broadly claim the same; but,
Having described my invention, what I do claim as new, and desire 'to secure by Letters Patent, is
l. A neck-wear tip constructed of a. central piece of flexible i'naterial and separate pieces of channeled material attached to the sides thereof, substantially as described.-
2. A double ended neck wear tip constructed of a central piece of flexible material and separate pieces of material fastened to the sides thereof, substantially as described.
