Be it known that I, LEONARD M. Wooncoen, of the city of Auburn, New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Furnace-Grates, of which the following is a full and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specication, in which- Figure l is a plan or top view; Fig. 2, a side elevation; Fig. 3, a supportiiig-bracket5 Fie. ,afront view oflock; Fig. 5, an actuating-bar; Fig. 6, one of the sections, and Fig. 7, an end View of two sect-ion. Fig. S, 9, 10, 1l, and 12 are detail drawings to further illustrate the locking mechanism.
In the drawings, F F are the two supporting-plates or bed-pieces. The front one, F, has a lengthwise channel, t t, upon its upper surface, which retains the heads of the binding-bolts of the frame, and thereby causes all movement of the grate from expansion to be from front to rear, the frame sliding upon the plate F.

The bars A A are supplied with lugs a, like those of the sections C. Vithin the frame the sections C are supported upon their terminal journals. These sections are each provided with a series of double lugs or projections,p p, Figs. G and 7. These lugs are of peculiar i'orrn, extending upward above the axial bar o o, Fig. G, whereby an air-space is obtained throughout their entire transverse length between each pair of lugs, or the whole distance r r2, 7. Each lug is ofthe shape shown in. Fig. 7, the side 1* r heilig approximately a circular arc from the center r, and the side r i" being of the same form from ri as a center. The upper or bearing surface, yr 1"", is preferably flat, although this is immaterial, while the bottom, also preferably ilat, may be of any desired form consistent with economy of construction.
Vhen two sections constructed as above described are simultaneously rocked upon their terminal journals, as shown in Fig. 7, their opposed points remain throughout the movement at an invariable distance apart for the amount of rocking shown in Fig. 7 by dotted lines. Therefore this grate will not break, grind, or crush the coal in process of shaking.
A rocking movement of greater extent than shown by dotted lines in Fig. 7 will dump the grate.
The sections C have each a down-hanging arm, d, and by means of a bar, E, constructed as shown, the sections are all made to roel; in parallel position.
Motion is imparted to the grate-sections by means of the actuating-bar L, the hanging pivoted arm K, rod H, and tie-rod E. rlhe rod L is detachable, and when used is seated in a recess, 7a, in the hanging arm K, and being turned its projection Z takes behind the lug a, thus retaining it in position. A hanger, G, is secured to the front bed-plate, F, and is detachable therefrom by running back the screw w, Fig. 3,when. the hanger may be drawn forward and disengaged from the lug u of the plate F. This hanger consists of a body portion, G, by which it is attached to the bedplate F, and two strong parallel horizontal legs, fj g, which extend to the front and are provided with bolt-holes to receive a bolt, g', which secures to the adjusted position upon the legs g g the hanging pivoted arm K,which swings from front to rear between the legs q g. Said bolt also secures the lock-plate N, which is suspended rigidly from the legs g g. This castingV N is of' equal width with the lower part ofthe pivoted arm K, which swings before it.
To the back of the casting N is pivoted the lock M which consists of a -pawl provided with a lange, in., at its lower end projecting each side ot' the lock-plate N and beyond said plate to embrace and hold the pivoted arm K. The weight of this lock M is so disposed that when hanging free fromits point of suspension it swings by gravity into Contact with and does so embrace the arm K, and thus serves to lock the said arm K when the rod L is removed; but when the rod L is inserted in its recess k and turned so that Z is horizontal Z raises the lock M by bearing against the ear agthus placing M in its dotted position, Fig. 4. Further adjustments are obtained by means of set-nuts at cach extremityof the bar H, and

by means of a bracket, z', which is adjustable along the length ofthe tie-rod E,which is made broad and pierced with holes for this purpose.
What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. The combination of the channeled front bed-plate, F, with the rear plate, F', frame A A B B B2, and grate-bars having trunnions supported by said frame.
2. The c0nibination,with a grate consisting of a series of pivoted grate-bars, of the swinging barsK, connected with the said grate-bars, and the locking-bar M, pivoted adjacent to the said bar K and having at its lower end a flanged portion adapted to grasp the bar K and to swing byV gravity into locking contact therewith.
3. In combination with a rocking grate, a bed`plate, F, provided with a lug, u, the detachableV bracket G, recessed to receive said lug and provided with legs g g, and the swing ing bar K, suspended from said bracket G and connected to said grate.
4. The combination, with a series of connected pivoted grate-bars, of the swinging bar 25 K, connected with the said grate-bars and provided with the recess k, the detachable handle L, having the projection Z, and the pivoted locking-bar M, adapted to be disengaged from the said bar K by the said projection.
5. The combination, with a furnace-grate consisting of a series of bars provided with projections, of the hanger G, detachably secured to the frame of the grate and having arms y, provided with a series of holes, the swinging bar K, pivotally secured to the said hanger, the connecting-bar E, also provided with a series of holes, and the adjustable connectingrod H.
