UNTTED STATES PATENT OFFICE.,
SAMUEL lV. ALSTON, OF PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA, ASSIGNOR TO JAMES LANNING,'OF SAME PLACE.
GRATE.
SPECIFECATON forming part of Letters Patent No. 351,242, dated Qetober 19, 1886.
Application filed September 2G, 1885.- Serial No. 178,285. (No model.)
To @ZZ whom, it may concern.:
Be it known that I, SAMUEL W. ALs'roN, a citizen or" the United States, residing in the city and county of Philadelphia, State o't'Penn- Sylvania, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Grates, which improvement is fully set forth in the following specification and accompanying drawings, in which- Figure l represents a top or plan view oi' a grate embodying my invention. Fig. 2 represents a bottom plan view thereof. Fig. 3 represents a vertical section in line x a", Fig. 1. Fig. a represents a vertical section in line y y, Fig. 2.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in the several iigures.
My invention relates to improvements in grates; and it consists in the construction of the same with rocking bars mounted on a rotatable frame, as hereinafter fully set forth, whereby the said bars may be rocked silnultaneously with the rotary movement of the frame.
It further consists in the combination of parts, arranged as herein described, whereby t-he grate may be readily dumped or tilted when desired.
Referring` to the drawings, -A represents a bed-plate7 from whose front and rear depend hangers B, which are cast with or secured to said plate in any suitable manner.
C represents a bar, which. is formed with journals G, the latter rest-ing on the hangers B.
D represents the frame ol' the grate, from which depends a pivot, D, the latter being itted in an opening in the bar C, whereby the frame may be turned horizontally or laterally on said bar, and as the bar is rotatingly mounted on the hangers B, itpermits the overturning of the grate, as will be hereinafter more fully described. The frame D is of the form of an open rim with a bar, D2, at the bottom, the pivot D being connected with said bar. At the top ofthe trame are the grate-bars E, which are formed with journals E', which are mounted on said frame, it being seen that the bars are rotatable on the frame. Depending from the grate-bars are arms FF, which are connected at the bottom by an arm, G, which is pivoted to the arms F F, the arm F passing through a slot, II, in the bar D2 of the frame D and a slot, J, in the rotary bar C.
To the front of the frame D is secured a rod, K, which passes through a guide, L, on the bed-plate, and has its outer end squared for attachment of a key or other suitable tool, by which the grate is raked.
To the side of the bed-plate is pivoted a le ver, M, whose inner end or nose projects under the frame D and prevents overturning of the grate.
Vhen it is desired to rake the lire, the frame D is rotated laterally by the key on the rod K, and as the arm F of the central grate-bar E strikes the wall of the slot J of the bar G said arm F is deiiected laterally, thus imparting rocking motions to the connected gratebar. As the arms F of the other grate-bars are connected with the arm F by means of the arm G, rocking motions are also imparted to the remaining grate-bars, so that whilethe grate is rotated in horizontal directions each grate-bar is rotated or rocked, and so the tire is quickly and effectively raked.
By moving the lever M from the frame D and properly operating the rod K, the grate may be rotated with the journaled bar C, and thus overturned, so as to let down the tire or ashes into the ash-pit.
The side ot the frame opposite to the lever M is provided with a bracket or hooked lug, M', for preventing lowering of the grate at said side. p
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Let-ters Patent, is-
l. In combination with a central supportingbar, a frame pivotally mounted thereon, and having a lateral extension forming a handle, oseillat-ing bars mounted on said frame and provided with arms, and links connecting said arms, one or more ofthe arms of the oscillating bars engaging the supporting-bar, whereby the said bars may be operated by the lateral movement of the frame, substantially as described.
2. A frame having grate-bars rotatingly mounted thereon, arms attached to said bars, a connecting-piece pivoted to said arms, a bed` plate, and a deflecting-piece mounted on said ICO bed-plate, engaging one of said arms, substanpivot andsustained on said bed-plate, and devices connecting said rocking bars, consisting of arms .attached to said rocking bars and links connected to said arms, one cfr, said arms being in engagement with the said pivot-bearing bar,
substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
4. A grate having a rotary raking-frame, gratebars rotatingly mounted on said frame, a slotted bar to which the frame is pivoted, a bed-plate sustaining said slotted bar, and arms connected with the grate-bars and With cach other, one of said arms passing throughsaid slotted bar and being deflected thereby, causing the rocking of the gratevbars when the frame is rotated or moved, substantially as described.
5. Arotatable frame carrying rocking bars andformed With a bottom bar, D2, which is provided with a pivot,D and a slot,H,thc bar C, receiving said pivot and having a slot, J the bed-plate A, with hangers B, supporting said bar C, arms F F, attached to the grate-bars and connected by a pivotal arm, G, one of said arms F F passing through the slot- J as a lateral deiiector, substantially as stated.
' 6. A rotatable frame having rocking gratebars with depending arms connected together,
a slotted bar mounted on the bed-plate and pivotally supporting said frame, one of the depending bars or arms passing through said slot, a bed-plate with guide, and a catch, all substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
7. The bed-plate A, with hangers B and guide L, in combination with bar C, having slot J, the frame D, With pivot D', having bear ing in bar C, the bars E, journaled in the frame D, the arms F F', connected by the arms G, said arm F passing through the slot J of the bar C, and the rod K, attached to the frame'v D, all substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
