SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 610,551, dated September 13, 1898.

Be it known that I, RUDOLPH A. MAY, a citizen of the United States,residing at Akron, in the county of Summit and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Grates; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawings, making a part of this specification, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon, in which* Figure 1 is a horizontal section showing the grate in its normal position. Fig. 2 is a vertical section showing the grate taken on a line at right angles to Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a view showing a portion of the rear grate-supporting arm and its socket. Fig. 4 is aview showing a portion of the grate and its support. Fig. 5 is a view showing the link properly attached or connected. Fig. 6 is a view showing a portion ,of one of the grate-supporting arms.` Fig. 'Z is a detached View of one of the connectinglinks. Fig. 8 is a view of the grate, showingthe sections disconnected. Fig. 9 is an under side view of one of the hinges or connections, showing the same secured to hold the grate-sections in proper position. i The present invention has relation to grates; and it consists in the different parts and combination of parts hereinafter described, and particularly pointed out in the claims. Y
Similar letters and figures of reference indicate corresponding parts in the views of the drawings.
In the accompanying drawings,1 represents the base, which within itself is constructed in the ordinary manner, reference being had to connecting the different parts belonging thereto. To the rear portion of the, base and near the upper end thereof is connected the socket 2, which socket is substantially ofl the form shown, and it is provided with the recessed plate or lip 3, which is preferably formed lintegral with the socket-proper. For the purpose of providing a means for sup-u porting the grate 4 a spider is provided, which consistsof the arms 5 and 6 and the cone 7,
which cone ispso locatedthat it will come in the center of the upperopening ofthe base 1. Upon the cone 7 is located the grate4, which grate is provided with'the cone 9, which cone is provided upon its bottom or under side with the socket 8, which socket receives the upper vend of the cone 8, said parts forming a 4bearing-point for the grate 4.
For the purpose of assisting in holding the grate in proper position with reference to its support 4 and at the sanne time prevent the `grate from tilting independent of its support the lugs or projections 10 are formed upon the arms 5 and 6. The arms 6 are extended forward from the cone 7 and diverge, so as to provide bearing-points for said arm, by which arrangement the cone 7 is held-in proper posiltion with reference to the grate at all times and under all circumstances. To the front or forward ends ofthe arms 6 are pivotally attached the top or upper4 ends of the links 11 by means of the lug-bolts 12, which lugbolts vare substantially of the form shown, and, ,as shown, they are provided with the downward-extending ends VV13, which ends overlap the links, as illustrated in Fig. 4. The links 11 are extended downward and are connected to the levers 14by means ofthe bolts 15. For the purpose of providing a means for properly connecting the bars 14 said bars are formed in two piecesor parts and their inner ends provided with the rightangledportions 16, which right-angled portions overlap each other and aregsecurely connected together by means of `suitable clamping-bolts, ,suchI as 17. r The only object and purpose of forming the levers 14 in twopieces or VVparts'is to provide for properly connecting said bars to the base 1 andto the arms 6 by meansof the links 11. The levers14 extend forward to nearly the frontor forward edge of the base 1 and are pivotally connected to the bearings 18, which bearings 18 are preferably formed integral withthe plates 19, which plates are securely bolted or otherwise connected to the inner` sidesof the base 1.
. Fordthepurpose of operating thegrate 4, as hereinafter described, one of the arms 14 at its forward end is provided with the slotted head 20, which slotted heady maybesubstanloo tially of the form shown, or it may be of any other desired form, and its only object is to provide a means for connecting the inner end of the lever 21 to said head, for the purpose hereinafter described.
For the purpose of providing a means for shaking the grate 4 when in the position illustrated in Fig. 1 said grate is provided with the arm 22, to which arm is connected the downwardly-extended arm 23, to which curved arm is attached the inner end of the shaking-bar 24, which `shaking-bar is extended forward through the front plate 25 of the base 1 and is provided with the handhold 26, which handhold is formed open, as illustrated in the drawings, and is so formed for the purpose hereinafter described.
When it is desired to tilt the grate so as to bring the grate into a position to remove the material located upon the upper side of said grate or for any other purpose, the lever 2l is inserted into the slotted head 20, as illustrated in Figs. 1 and 2, after which the outer end of the lever or handle 21 is moved upward, which causes the levers 14 to turn upon their pivotal points 1S, thereby lowering the inner ends of said bars, carrying with saidv inner ends the links 11 and the forward ends of the arms 6. For the purpose of releasing the arms 14, so that they can be lowered at their inner ends, the curved catch 27 is moved outward by means of the handle 28. The outward movement of the catch 27 releases the extension 29, which extension is preferably formed integral with the lever 14, or it may be a forward extension of said arm, as its only purpose is to engage the gravitycatch 27.
l For the purpose of holding the levers 14 at any desired inclination the gravity-catch 27 is provided with a number of notches, such as 30, which notches are so arranged and located that they will form stops against the upward movement of the extension 29. It will be understood that by providing the links 11 as the levers 14 move downward the upper ends of said links will be carried backward, by which arrangement the arc described during the downward movements of the arms 14 will be compensated for, thus allowing the arms 6 to freely follow the downward movements of the levers 14. For the purpose of providing a'lever that can be used to operate the shaking-bar 24 an ordinary straight bar is formed or used, and it can be passed through the eye 26, as illustrated in dotted lines, Fig. l, its lower end being inserted into the fixed eyebar 31, by which arrangement the bottom or lower end of the lever (shown in dotted lines) is xed, and by moving the upper end of said lever back and forth it will operate the shaking-bar 24, which in turn operates the grate by reason of the bar 24 being pivotally connected to the grate, it being understood that a reciprocating movement will be given to the bar 24 as the lever shown in the dotted lines is moved back and forth. The
object of the `lever is to give additional leverage, so as to more easily operate the bar 24 to shake the grate. The lever shown in the dotted lines may be removed when not in use, and, if desired, the bar 24 may be operated without the use of any lever.
For the purpose of providing a grate that will have a tendency to carry the fuel or ashes away from its center and toward its periphery said grate is inclined downward from its center, as illustrated inrthe drawings.
The cone 8 acts to break the body ofl coals, by which arrangement the ashes and like. material are more free to move down the inclined face of the grate 4.
In the drawings the connecting-links 11 are shown provided with t-he shoulders 35 and 36, which shoulders are so arranged that they will form resting-points for the arms 6 and also resting-points for the links upon the levers 14 and at the same time allow for the different angles assumed by the arms 6 and 14.
It will be understood that by providing the curved arm 23 the shaking-bar 24 will not become bound, but will be free to move up and down on said arm during the time the grate proper is lowered or elevated, and by providing the curved arm 23 and connecting the shaking-bar 24 thereto the grate 4 can be rotated back and forth upon its bearing regardless of the inclination of said grate.
It will be understood that by providing the socket 2 and fixing said socket to the rear portion of the base 1 and providing the arm 5 with the downward-extending lip or flange 37 the grate-support, which consists of the arms 5 and 6, will be held against displacement by reason of said lip 37 engaging with the recessed plate 3.
For the purpose of providing a means for IOO placing the grate 4 in proper position after the different parts of the base have been properly assembled said lgrate is formed in two sections a and b, which when connected together, as hereinafter described, produce the grate 4. By this arrangement a new grate can be placed in position after the original one has been burned out or destroyed without changing or disconnecting any of the parts. Heretofore it has been impossible to pass the grate when formed in one piece through the door-opening; but by forming the grate in sections a and b each section can be passed through separately and said sections put together after they have been brought into proper position. For the purpose of providing a grate that will be rigid the section Z) is provided with the bent or curved projections 3S and the section a provided with the projections 39, which projections are provided with the openings 40, through which openings the extensions 38 are passed, and when the sections a and b are brought in true alinement one with the other the ends ofthe projections 38 are seated into the sockets 41, as illustrated in Fig. 5. vided with the lugs 42, which lugs are so lccated that they will engage the keys 43 when said keys are passed through the apertures 44, formed in the open extensions 39, as illustrated in Fig. 9.
It will be understood that when the grate is tilted it is brought into such a position that the material located on the grate can be easily removed.
Having fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, iS
l. `The combination of a base and a gratesupport, consisting of a rearward-extending arm or bar, and diverging forward-extending arms, levers 14 provided with the portions 16, said portions 16 connected together, links connected to the levers and to the diverging arms, a slotted head connected to one of the levers, the extension 29 and the gravity-catch, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
2. The combination of a base, a grate-sup port consisting of the arms 5 and 6, the arm 5 provided with a lip at its rear end, a fixed socket to engage the lip, levers 14 provided with angled portions and the levers connected together, links connected to the levers 14 and to the arms 6, said links provided with shoulders located between the pivoted ends of the links, and a grate located upon the grate-support, and means for holding the grate and its support in an elevated position, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
3. The combination of a base, the socket 2 provided with a recessed lip, said socket secured to the base 1, a grate-support carrying a grate, the arm 5 provided with a downwardextending portion or lip, forward-extending arms 6 supported upon pivoted bars, a slotted head located upon one or both of the pivoted bars, a gravity-catch and means for 0perating the pivoted bars, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
4. The combination of a grate formed in sections, and one of said sections provided with the bent or curved projections 3S, and the other sectionprovided with the open proj ections 39 the lugs 42 formed upon the curved projections and the keys or pins 43, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
