UNITED TATES NICHOLAS N. BETSINGER, OF MARGELLUS, NE? YORK.
SHlPPlNG=CASE FOR COMB HONEY.
QPECIPICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 358,722, dated March l, 1887.
Q Application filed Dc'ccmbcr 31, 1886. Serial No. 223,077. (No model.)
To ttZZ whom it may concerto:
Beit known that I, NIorroLits N. Bn'rs'rxemz,
a citizen of the United States, residing at Mareellus, in the county of Onondaga, State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Shipping-Gases for Comb, Honey, of which the followingis a specification, reference being had therein to'the accompanying'drawings. This invention relates to a box or case for shipping, marketing, and displaying comb honey; and the object of the invention is to provide a case which byits peculiar formation and construction is adapted to receive combsections and display the contents thereof without permitting contact with the outer air, whereby the honey is retained in a pure state, free from dirt, and made more salable than heretofore.
Vrith these objects in view the invention consists in certain features of construction, hereinafter described, and particularly pointed out in the claims.
Referring to the drawings, Figure 1 isa perspective of a box constructed in accordance with my invention, the honey-comb section Fig. 2 is a central longitudinal section of the box or case; and Fig. 3, a central longitudinal section of the comb-section, the honey being removed. therefrom.
Like letters of reference indicate like parts in all the figures of the drawings.
In carrying out my invention I construct the case or box preferably of pasteboard; or it may be of any other suitable material adapted for the purpose, and form the same in this instance by bending the pasteboard so as to form the top and bottom portions, A and A, and the side portions, A This may be done in any manner well known to box manufacturers. At the end of the case is formed the bottom or end wall, A and for the purpose of forming a lid, 13, and a re-enforcing portion, 13, for the under side, A, I provide a strip of the same or different material, and strengthen or connect the hinged portion and the re-enforcing portion in this instance by a textile hinge, B The upper portion of the box is cut out to form an opening, 0, which may be of any desired size or shape, and back of said opening is placed a piece of glass, mica, or other transparent substance, D. Back of this glass, mica, or other transparent substance is a re-enforcing portion, E, cut out, as at E, to register with the opening 0 in the upper portion, A, of the box. If desired, fillings F may be inserted between the upper portion, A, of the box and the re-enforcing portion E thereof, whereby the glass, mica, or other transparent substance is held in place and eoonomized.
The construction of the comb-section G is so well known that a detailed description thereof is unnecessary.
The section is placed within the box after be ing taken from the hive, and the cover is closed and may be secured by any suitable means, or may be simply pressed within the edges of the walls of the box. In this manner predetermined quantities of honey may be shipped or put on sale, and the contents of the case may be readily inspected without the necessity of removing the section from the box. By reason of the re enforcing portions E and B that portion of the box having the greatest strain and bearing the greatest weight during transportation or shipment is rendered strong and not liable to break. If desired, however, though not necessary, an additional shippingcase, as X, of any ordinary construction, may be employed to ship separate sectionsas, for example, as samples.
The cover X of the shipping-case is intended to be inserted at the end of the case, to rest upon the cover B of the box, and to be secured in position in any desired manner. WVhere it is desired to ship a number of combsections in the boxes A, one for each section, they may be arranged in any suitable manner in an ordinary shipping-case.
Having described my invention and its operation, what I claim is- 1, A box formed with top, bottom, and side walls and an end wall having a reenforcing strip upon its bottom bent to form a hinged cover, and having its upper wall cut away to form a sight-opening, and provided with a transparent pane, and a strip for re-enforcing the box and retaining the pane in position,
and cut away to permit of the inspection of I In testimony whereof Iaffix mysignature in [o the interior of the box, substantially as specipresence of two witnesses.
fied.
2. A box having the side walls, A A A and 5 the end wall, A and having the re-enforcing portion B, forming a cover, as B, a side, A, having aperture 0, the strip E, having aperture E, the transparent pane D, and the fillings F, substantially as speeified.-
NICHOLAS N. BETSINGER.
