LABEL-HOLDER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 358,644, dated March 1, 1887.
Application filed March 30, 1886.
- receive labels and allow their attachment to trunks, boxes, drawers, or packages holding merchandise of any kind; and the invention has for its object to provide a simple, inexpensive, and efficient device of this character.
The invention consists in certain novel fea tures of construction and combinations of parts of the label-holder, all as hereinafter fully described and claimed.
Reference is to be hadto the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures.
Figure l is a front or face view of my improved label-holder. Fig. 2 is an edge or side View thereof, and Fig. 3 is an end view thereof.
The case A of the label-holder, as shown, consists of an inner plate, a, and a somewhat smaller outer plate, a, which are held together by rivets a The inner plate, a, is preferably solid, and is provided with a number of holes, 0 through which screws or nails may be driven to attach the label-holder to a trunk, box, drawer, or other receptacle for holding goods of any kind. The outer plate, a, of the case is a narrow strip bent or shaped in U form or open at one end, and provided all around its inner margin and face with a rabbet to receive the label B, which, when in the case, will extend a little beyond the outer end of the plate or frame a, as clearly shown in Figs. 1 and 2.
A spring, 0, is connected at the opposite extremities of its side arms, 0 0, to the case A-- as, for instance, by soldering the arms at a c in the angle between the edges of the caseplates a a. The arms 0 c extend forward to the ends of the side parts of the case plate or frame a, where they connect with the outer cross-bar, c, of the spring, which bar at its center is bent outward to form a loop, D, to the underside of which is fixed, in any approved way-as by solderinga lug or plate, E, which has a square inner end or shoulder,
Serial No. 197,127. (No model.)
6, which normally stands in front of the outer end of the label B, while the cross-bar a of the spring presses down 011 the top of the label, and whereby the label will be held securely in the case.
Eyes cr loops F F, fixed to the case A, hold the spring 0 in proper position edgewise of the case A, and also limit the extent of the upward or outward movement of the spring when it is lifted away from the face of the label or so that the latch-lug E stands above the face of the label to allow the latter to be pushed or slid from the case by pressure of the fingers when the label is to be removed for any purpose. To place a label in the case A, it only is necessary to slip the end of the label between the upturned or inclined lower face of the latch-lug E and the plate a of the case A and push the label inward until the latch-lug springs down behind its outer end.
The eyes or loops F are formed, preferably, by bending up lips stamped out with the plate a of the case; but they may be made separate from the case and be attached thereto in any suitable manner.
I do not limit myself to the precise form of the parts shown in the drawings and above described, as it is evident that the caseA may be made in one or two pieces of wood or cast metal, or leather, or papier-maoh, or any other suitable material. Furthermore, the label case may be made open at one side to receive the label thereat, instead of at the end, and the spring 0 in this instance would be arranged with its cross-bar and latch-lug at the open side of the case. Furthermore, the case may be made to receive the label at its back or inner face, if preferred. a
Having thus fully described myinvention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
l. A label-holder comprising a case formed open at the edge and provided with a slide way to receive the label, and a spring crossing the face of the case next its open edge and provided, with a latch-lug adapted to take her hind the inserted label, and the cross-bar of the spring adapted to bear on the face of the outer end of the label, substantially as herein set forth.
2. The combination, in alabel-holder, of a case, A, open at the edge and provided with a slideway to receive the label, and a bent spring, 0, fixed at extremities to the case and crossing its open edge at the slideway, and a latchlug, E, on the spring and formed with a shoulder, 6, adapted to look behind the label, while the spring cross-bar 0 laps on the face of the label, substantially as herein set forth.
3. The combination, in a label-holder, of a case, A, open at the edge and provided with a slideway to receive a label, a bent spring, 0, fixed at its extremities to the case and crossing its open edge at the slideway, alatch-lug, E, on the spring and formed with a shoulder, 8, adapted to lock behind a label, while the spring cross-bar 0 laps 011 the face of the label, and eyes or loops F F, held to the caseA and inelosing the side parts of the spring, substantially as described, and for the purposes set forth.
