ALMERAN ROBERTS, OF HANOVER, MAINE.
SNOW-PLOW.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. $58,624:,dater1 March 1, 1887.
Application filed September 24, 1886. Serial No. 214,443. (No model.)
To aZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ALMERAN ROBERTS, of Hanover, in the county of Oxford and State of Maine, have invented a new and Improved 5 SnowPlow, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, which is a perspective view.
The object of my invention is to construct a snow-plow by means of which the snow may be broken up, uniformly distributed over the road-bed,and pressed downward to form a compact and even road, and which,in case of deep snow or drifts, will displace the greater portion of the snow, leaving only enough for use in the 5 road, and in case of a light snow by reversing this operation will gather the snow in from the sides of the road and press it down upon the roadway.
My invention consists of a frame formed of o timbers crossed at right angles and secured together and connected by timbers at their front and rear ends, the forward portion of the frame carrying series of adjustable cutters, and a movable runner or rudder for guiding the 5 plow, the rear portion of the frame carrying scrapers for scraping the snow; also,in the combination, with the frame and the scrapers, of a detachable road-formcr drawn after the scrapers, for giving the desired shape to the road-bed.
The main frame of the plow is formed of two timbers, A A, crossing each other at right angles and connected at their ends by the timbers B B. To the center of the frame thus formed 5 is secured a platform, B, and to the forward part of the frame are attached the timbers l 2 3, crossing the frame at regular intervals and arranged parallel with the timber B.
Upon the front timber, B,is erected a frame, 0 A, formed of the two uprights 4 and the cross piece 5, secured to the upper ends of the uprights. A vertical shaft, K,is journaled in the center of the timber B, and in the center of the cross-piece 5, and extends above said cross piece, the shaft K being squared above the cross-piece to receive a lever, e. To thelower end of the shaft K is secured a runner, D, pro vided withv an angular lower edge and curved upward at its forward end. An inverted iron 0 arch, D, is secured to the under surface of the timber l3 and rests upon the runner D,forming athird bearing forthc shaft K. Upon the shaft K is secured a collar, K, upon which rests a cross-bar, e, which is apertured to receive the shaft K.
In boxes 71, secured to the uprights 4, isjournaled a windlass-shaft, a, to which are attached chains 9, which are also secured to the ends of the cross-bar c. The Windlass-shaft a is pro vided with a ratchet, i, which is engaged by a pawl, i, pivoted to an upright, 4. One end of the shaft a is squaredto receiveacranlgi. By turning the shaft a the chainsg are wound upon said shaft, thus raising the forward end of the plow.
At thejuneture of the bars 1 2 3 with the timbers A A are formed bearings, in which are journaled vertical shafts O, carrying at their lower ends the scrapers 0, having beveled front and rear edges, and to the upper end of each shaft 0 is secured a wheel, 0, by which the shaft is turned to bring the scrapers G into position for use. To the shafts 0, above the timbers l 2 3, are secured segmental ratchets a, which are engaged by pawls b, pivoted to the timbers 1 2 8.
To the forward surfaces of the rear ends of the timbers A A are secured scrapers E, having outwardlycurved lower edges, and provided with strengtheningbars E, framed into the timbers A,and extending downward nearly to the lower edges of the scrapers.
To the shaft F, journaled in the rear timber, B, and in the cross-bar G, extending across the rear part of the frame, is secured a roadformer, 13, consisting of the crossbar H, the bottom board, I, and the side pieces, J. In uprights L, projecting from the cross-bar H, are journaled Windlass-shafts a, to which are secured chains 6, connected with pins d, projecting rearwardly from the timber B. The road-former B. follows the scraper E, and is made to press with more or less force upon one side or the other of the road by operating the right side, the scrapers C the right side and closed on the left side. This will bring the snow all to the right side, and the reverse will bring the snow all to the left side. When it is desired to scatter the snow and remove it from the roadway, the forward edges of the scrapers G are turned inwardly toward the center of the road, and held in position for use by the ratchets a and pawls b. When the snow is to be thrown from the sides of the road toward the center, the rear edges of the scrapers G are inclined inward toward the center of the road, when the scrapers will gather the snow and convey ittoward the roadway.
The scrapers E dress the roadway, so as to give it an even surface, and the road-former B, which follows behind the scrapers, gives to the road the required form and compactness.
Should it be desired to form rats for the horses, wide runners will be attached to the floor of the road-former B. c
Having thus fully described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent 1. In a snow-plow, the combination of series of adjustable scrapers arranged to direct the snow toward or away from the center of the road, according to their adjustment, 2. triangular scraper carried behind the series of adj ustable scrapers, and a guiderunner for determining the direction of the plow, substantially as described.
are opened on 2. In a snow-plow, the combination of the guide-runner D, the adjustable scrapers O, the scrapers E, and the adjustable road-forn1er B-, substantially as described.
3. In a snow-plow, the combination, with the adjustable scrapers O and the scrapers E, of the guide-runner D, provided with the shaft K, the cross-bar 6, supported by the shaft K, the windlassshaft a, and the chains 9, substantially as described.
t. In a snow-plow, the combination of the adj ustable scrapers G, the scrapers E,the roadformer B, pivotally connected with the scrapers E, the windlasses a", and chains e',for adjusting the road-former, substantially as described.
5. The combination, in a snow-plow, of the frame formed of the timbers A A, crossing each other at right angles, thetimbers B B, se-
cured to the ends of the timbers A, the frame A, supported by the timber B, the .inverted arch D, the runner D, the shaft K, attached thereto and provided with the collar K, the cross-bar e, the Windlass-shaft a, chains g, the adjustable scrapers O, ratchets a, pawls b,and the fixed scrapers E,substantially as described.
