SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 358,319, dated February 22, 1887.
Application filed December 18, 1886. Serial No. 221,933. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, EDWARD (J. WILLIs, a citizen of the United States, residing at Denver, in the county of Arapahoe and State of Colorado, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Bottles, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings, in which similar letters refer to corresponding parts.
My invention relates to bottles and other receptacles for holding liquids, and more especially spirituous and fermented liquors; and the object of my improvements is to provide a bottle or other receptacle with the neck or nozzle of the same so made that when the cork or stopper is inserted in the opening provided therefor the pressure of the contents of the bottle or receptacle shall beagainst the side of the cork or stopper instead of against the end, thus avoiding the necessity of tying or fastening the cork or stopper in the bottle or receptacle by means of string or wire; also,
to provide an easy means for corking bottles or other receptacles without causing any pressure on the contents thereof at the time of corking the same.
Figure 1 is a top view of the neck or nozzle of a bottle so made that the cork or stopper may be inserted through the top part of and at a right angle or nearly right angle with the neck. Fig. 2 is a side view of. the same with cork inserted. Fig. 3 is a sectional view of a bottle, showing the top of the neck, taken on the line at m, Fig. 1. Fig. 4 is a top view of the neck of abottle,showing the cork inserted in an opening in the side of the neck and parallel thereto. The cork or stopper maybe inserted in a slot or opening made within the neck of a bottle or other receptacle, in which the pressure of the contents will in that case be against the side instead of against the end of the cork or stopper, thus avoiding the tying or wiring the cork to keep it in position, as shown in Figs. 4 and 5, in which 0 is a cork; c, a vertital section of the same. d is an opening for the reception of the cork or stopper. (1 is a slot in the outer wall of the opening (1, which reaches to or nearly to the top of the neck of the bottle for the purpose of inserting a hook or other suitable instrument underneath the cork for removing the same, and also being a continuation of the opening d at the lower end'thereofl'so that no air or liquid can remain at the bottom of opening 11 to prevent the cork from being inserted into its proper place, or, alter being inserted, have a tendency to force ittherefrom. e is the opening leading from the inside of the bottle to the opening d. f is that part of the neck of the bottle which is unbroken and forms a band entirely around the opening d.
What I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. In a bottle, the mouth, in combination with the top a, opening'a a, lips to a", and opening (6 as set forth and described.
2. In abottle, the neck, in combination with the opening d, slot d, opening 6, and band f, as set forth and described.
