SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 358,272. dated February 22, 1887.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, JAMES A. ILIFF, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Indianapolis, in the county of Marion and State of Indiana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Pocket- Books; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being bad to the accompanying drawings, and to letters or figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part ofthis specification.

My invention relates to certain new and use ful improvements in pocket-books or envelopes which are designed especially for inclosing and protecting valuable papers to which it is desired to have frequent access, as pension-certificates, patent-deeds, 830., the object of my invention being to provide a substantial pocket book or envelope which will have apocket in which the portion of the certificate or other valuable paper may be placed, so as to protect the seal and signatures thereon, and provide a portion which is adapted to receive the other part of the certificate, said portion being provided with side flaps for protecting the edges of the paper placed in the pocket.

My invention also consists in the special construction and combination of the parts, wherebyIprovide an envelope or pocket-book which is especially adapted to receive and protect the certificate, said pocket-book or envelope having a pocketfor the reception of other papers, acovering-fiap,and means for holding said covering-flap closed, as will be hereinafter fully set forth, and pointed out in the claims.

In the accompanying drawings, which illustrate my invention, Figure l is a front view of an envelope or pocket-book constructed in accordance with my improvement. Fig. 2 is a rear view. Fig. 3 is a plan view showing the last flap folded. Fig. 4. is also a plan view showing the blank with pockets attached.

Fig. 5 is a sectional view taken through the line as m of Fig. 4; and Fig. 6 is a plan view of the pocket-book, showing a certificate in place, the seal and signatures being covered by the pocket and the edges protected by the side flaps.

A refers to the main piece or exterior portion of the envelope, which consists of sections a, b, c, and d, which are formed of a single piece of material, as leather, the section a having the edge thereof rounded and provided with a slot, a, through which the fasteningstrap may he passed to hold the parts closed, as shown in Fi 2.

Ihe sections b, c, and d, each of which is about the same width, are provided on each edge with side pieces, b, c, and at, said side pieces or flaps being separated from each other by having a portion of the material cut away, as shown at ef. The side pieces or flaps, b, of the section b have attached to the under sides thereof a connecting-strip, B, which, with the body portion, forms a pocket, B, the opening of said pocket being adjacent to the section b, thus providing a pocket in which the lower portion of a document can be placed, so as to cover the seals and signatures thereon and have the body portion in sight without removing it from the envelope. The flaps d of the section (I may have attached thereto short strips d, having a go m med surface, whereby they can be attached to the document, so as to hold the end opposite to that in the pocket in the section d, and these strips will alsohold the flaps down.

By providing an envelope of the above construction I provide a means by which docu ments can be preserved and carried in the pocket. 1

WVhen the body portion of the envelope is made of leather, I prefer to attach to the inner side of the leather a lining of muslin, as shown at C, said lining covering the sections a, b, c, and d, blit not extending over the flaps. I also provide the section b with a pocket, D, the side walls of said pocket being formed by the stripB, and a strip, B, which extends across the envelopev and is attached to the edge of the strip B and to the upper edges of the flaps b b, the opening to the pocket thus formed being toward the section a. The upper edge of the outer wall of this pocket may be cut away, so that easy access may be had to the same.

The outer side of the section at is provided near its central portion with a small pocket,

which is adapted to receive small articles, as

postage-stamps. Said pocket 2) is formed by simply cutting a slit in the back section, d, the lining forming the back of said pocket. At the back of the section 0 is attached a tongue, 6, one end of said tongue being secured between the outer leather, while the free end enters a pocket, 6, therefor. This tongue is adapted to pass through the slit to in the section a, to hold the same down, as shown in Fig. 2 of the drawings. The section b may be provided at its upper right-hand corner with a rectangular cut-away portion, beneath which is placed a paper slip, upon which can be attached postage-stamps.

The object of the hereinbefore described pocket-book or envelope, besides providing a cheap and convenient means for containing documents, as patents, pensioncertificates, &c., is also to provide a means whercbyif the same is lost it may be promptly returned to the owner; and with this end in view I print or otherwise designate upon the front side of the envelope when the same is folded the name and address of the owner, and upon the stamp- POCliBi] words such as Finder will please attlch stamp and drop in post-office or letterbox.

I am aware that prior to my invention it has been proposed to make an en velope with side flaps to form independent pockets, and also thatit is old to make pocket-books with a lining which is folded so as to form pockets, and I do not claim such as my invention; but

\Vhat I do claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is

1. In an envelope or pocket-book for documents, a main portion folded so as to provide sections a, b, c, and d, the sections b c d having short side flaps, which are separated from each other, the section I) having a pocket the opening of which is toward the section a adjacent thereto, substantially as shown, and for the purpose set forth.

2. In an envelope for pocket-books, a main or body portion made of a single piece and provided with a suitable lining, said body portion comprising sections a, b, c, and d, sections 1), c, and (1 having side flaps, as shown, the side flaps of the section b having a connecting-strip attached to the under side thereof, and a connecting-strip to the upper sides of the flaps b, so as to provide two pockets, one of which opens toward the section 0, while the other opens toward the section a, substantially as shown.
