Abstract

A device for locking a plurality of hangers onto a display bar which includes a guard rail mounted at both ends of the bar in such a manner that both ends slide vertically and uniformly as the rail is raised and lowered into lock position. Opposing the mounted side of the rail is an overhanging lip which is adapted to contact the hooks of the hangers on the bar when the rail is in lock position.

Primary Examiner-Nile Cr Byers, .lr. Attorney-Bust and Borst GARMENT DISPLAY CASE This invention relates to security devices and more particularly to devices for securing garment hangers in a display case.

According to the present invention, there is provided a guard rail juxtaposed to a hanger bar in a garment display case in such a manner that garment hangers suspended from the bar may not be removed either singly or collectively from the case while the rail is in lock position but are removable collectively, if desired, or individually when the rail is raised from such position. It is frequently necessary in department stores show cases to change garment displays the individual units of which are hung from" separate hangers. It may be appreciated that this procedure requires inordinate time if each hanger must be separately and individually removed from the case. Means for pivoting the guard rail from lock to unlock position on the hanger bar are known. In the unlock position garments are collectively removable allowing the store employee the use of both hands. However, in lock position it has been found that hangers are individually removable due to the fact that there is sufficient space at the pivot end between rail and bar in their lock position through which the hooks of the hangers may be forced. The security of the display case is thus jeopardized. According to the present invention the guard rail remains parallel with the hanger bar as it is moving away and toward the bar thus eliminating the disadvantage of a pivot arrangement. The locking components are disposed intermediate the ends of the bar and rail which prevents the rail from being forcibly bent away from the bar at some intermediate point while the two members are in lock position thus permitting removal of hangers. The rail is specially designed to afford additional security for the display case.

One object of the invention is to provide an improved garment hanger security device which as a single unit locks as many hangers as are required to a support bar within a display case.

Other objects and advantages of the invention may be appreciated on reading the following description of one embodiment thereof which is taken in conjunction with the accompanying drawings, in which:

20 and 21. Due to the compression spring, the guard rail is normally in raised position. In its down or lock position the lip 24c actually contacts the hanger hooks which embrace the bar in order to positively prevent the hanger from being tilted on the bar and thence twisted and pulled off the bar and thereby removed from the display case.

Secured to the inner sidewall 24a of the rail 24 and central of its two ends is latching bar 26 having ratchet teeth 26a formed in one edge. Mounted underneath the hanger bar and secured to bracket 27 is showcase lock 28 positioned to receive the member 26. An internal locking pin (not shown) is adapted to contact the teeth 26a for locking purposes when the bolt is in its lowermost position and the display case is secured.

in operation the guard rail is sprung from closed to open position on turning the key1 in the lock 28. This enables the user to easily remove all t e hangers as a group using both hands which is desirable when making display changes. The fact that the rail is uniformly spaced from the bar in open position facilitates the making of such changes. in returning the rail to lock position, contact pressure of the rail on the hanger hooks is uniform along its entire length thus assuring that the hangers are equally secure.

Various modifications in the structure of the case could be effected by persons skilled in the art without departing from the scope and principle of the invention as defined in the appended claims.

We claim:

1. A garment hanger security device comprising a hanger bar, a guard rail disposed over the bar, mounting means for allowing the rail to move to and away from the bar while remaining parallel thereto, and locking means on said bar and rail being located substantially at the center of said bar and rail whereby the rail may not be forced away from said bar at some intermediate point thereof.

2. A garment hanger device as defined in claim 1, wherein said mounting means include biasing means for urging the rail to open position.
