Description

p 1965 M. B. SILVERBERG 3,206,793
NIGHT LOCK FOR A DOOR Filed March 22, 1963 INVENTOR. MICHAEL B. SILVERBERG ATTORNEY United States Patent 3,206,793 NIGHT LOCK FOR A DOOR Michael B. Silverberg, Lakewood, Calif. (6081 E. Comanche Drive, Westminster, Calif.) Filed Mar. 22, 1963, Ser. No. 267,197 4 Claims. (Cl. 16-137) This invention relates to a night lock for a door, which consists of a removable bar which spans the hinged side of the door to prevent opening of that door when the bar is in position.
An object of my invention is to provide a novel night lock for a door comprising a rigid bar which extends between the door frame and the door, and is removably attached to one or more of the hinges which mount the door in the frame.
Another object of my invention is to provide a novel night lock for a door in which the rigid bar is attached to a door hinge by means of a short bar or fitting which is attached to the hinge by its hinge pin.
Still another object is to provide a novel night lock for a door which is simple in construction, inexpensive to manufacture, and which can be easily and quickly mounted on a hinge of the door.
Other objects, advantages and features of invention may appear from the accompanying drawing, the subjoined detailed description and the appended claims.
In the drawing.
FIGURE 1 is a perspective view of my night lock in position on a door.
FIGURE 2 is an enlarged perspective view of my night lock in position on a door.
FIGURE 3 is a vertical sectional View of a door hinge with my lock mounted thereon as taken on line 3-3 of FIGURE 2.
FIGURE 4 is a perspective disassembled view of my night lock.
Referring more particularly to the drawing, the numeral 1 indicates a door which is mounted in a frame 2 on a plurality of hinges 3. The hinges 3 are of usual and well known construction and include a hinge pin 4 which extends vertically through the hinge 3. A mounting plate or fitting 5 is attached to the upper or lower end of the hinge 3 by means of the hinge pin 4. A hole 6 in one end of the fitting 5 receives the pin 4 and holds the fitting in place. The fitting 5 may be recessed, as shown at 7, in order to fit around the upper end of the hinge 3, as is best shown in FIGURE 3. A rigid bar 8 is removably attached at its center to the fitting 5 by means of a pin 9 which extends into a vertical hole 10 in the outer end of the fitting 5. The pin 9 has a sliding fit in the hole 10 so that the bar 8 can be easily attached to or removed from the fitting 5.
The outer ends of the bar 8 are each bent inwardly, as shown at 11 and 12, to form engaging fingers which press against the frame 2 and the door 1 respectively. These fingers firmly engage both the door frame and the door so that the door is held closed when the bar 8 is in operative position. A second pin 13 extends from one of the fingers 11 or 12 and fits into the hole 10 when See the bar 8 is not in locking position. The bar 8 can thus be hung from the fitting 5 when it is not desired to lock the door, and still is readily available whenever it is desired to eifectively bar or lock the door.
Having described my invention, I claim:
1. A night lock for a hinged door spanning between the door frame and the door comprising:
a rigid bar extending between the door frame and the door and engaging both the frame and the door,
a mounting fitting consisting of a plate, means securing said fitting to a hinge pin of the door hinge,
and means removably securing said bar to said fitting.
2. A night lock for a hinged door spanning between the door frame and the door comprising:
a rigid bar extending between the door frame and the door and engaging both the frame and the door,
a mounting fitting consisting of a plate, said fitting having a hole therein through which a hinge pin of the door hinge extends,
there being a second hole in said fitting and a pin extending from said bar and removably mounted in the second hole.
3. A night lock for a door hinged spanning between the door frame and the door comprising:
a rigid bar extending between the door frame and the door and engaging both the frame and the door,
a mounting fitting consisting of a plate, said fitting having a hole therein through which a hinge: pin of the door hinge extends,
there being a second hole in said fitting and a pin extending from said bar and removably mounted in the second hole,
a second pin on said bar, the second pin fitting into the second hole during non use of the bar.
4. A night lock for a hinged door spanning between the door frame and the door comprising:
a rigid bar extending between the door frame and the door and engaging both the frame and the door,
both ends of said bar being bent whereby one end engages the door frame and the other end engages the door,
a fitting, said fitting having a hole in one end thereof to receive a hinge pin of the door hinge,
said fitting having a second hole therein and a pin on said bar slidably fitting into the second hole.
