Description

SPECIFICATION A door lock device The invention relates to a lock device for a door with several bolts simultaneously operable from a common locking mechanism.
In British Patent n 1 462 068 dated 29th January 1974, in the name of the Applicant, is disclosed such a device comprising a U-shaped section applied by its base on the door leaf so that one branch thereof be substantially coplanar with the vertical free edge of said leaf, and which houses the lock mechanism, the bolt bodies moving horizontally -eventually the spring-bolt- and the transmissions between the mechanism and the bolts. During the horizontal displacement, the bolts extend through said section branch due to openings formed in the latter. A hood, for example also a U-shaped section, may cover said first section.
Such a device which is easily fitted improves the resistance of the door towards house-breakings. For these reasons, it is widely successful. The manufacturer and the installators must therefore have a large number of such devices available in order to meet the customers demand. The stock to maintain are all the more important that the lock devices are of two different types in order to take in account the fact that the free edge of a door leaf may be on the left or on the right of said leaf, that it is necessary in both cases to turn the mechanism key and the lever of the spring-bolt in the usual direction and that it is desirable that all the lock devices exhibit a uniform presentation.
The invention remedies this difficulty and meets these conditions. A lock device according to the invention may, with a single realization, fit doors the free vertical edge of which is on one side or the other.
It is characterized in that the two opposite branches of the U-shaped section are formed with opposite openings, so that each horizontally moving bolt may cross either one or the other of said branches.
Such a device may be fitted on doors of both types, the key of the lock mechanism being in both cases turned in the usual direction, viz. clockwise for the opening from the outside when said device is fitted on a door leaf the free vertical edge of which -as seen from the inside of the premises which are to be locked by said door- is on the right, and anti-clockwise when said free edge, also seen from the inside, is on the left. Moreover, the fitting of the device is made easy since it is possible to identify its top and its bottom and the installator has no problem as regards the direction of the vertical disposition of the section.
In the case where the lock comprises a spring-bolt, the direction of the action of the spring means acting on said bolt is changeable so that the bolt may always be biased towards its protecting position. To this effect, in one embodiment, the spring-bolt comprises a body as well as a head removably fixed to the body at one end or the other thereof and a first spring acts on the head in the appropriate direction when it is at a first end of the body and a second spring acts on the head in the other direction when said head is fixed at the other end of the body.
Further characteristics of the invention will become more apparent from the description of some of its embodiments, reference being made to the accompanying drawings wherein: Figure 1 shows a lock device according to the invention fitting out a door leaf the vertical free edge of which is, as seen from the inside, on the left; Figure 2 shows the same lock device fitting out a door leaf the vertical free edge of which is on the right; Figure 3 is a perspective view of a profiled section of the lock device.
Figure 4 is a perspective partial view of a springbolt of the lock device; Figure 5 is a partly elevational view of a springbolt of a lock of the device shown in Figure 1; Figure 6 is a view similar to that of Figure 5, but in the condition shown in Figure 2; Figure 7 is a perspective view of an other section of the lock device; Figure 8 is a horizontal sectional view of a casing of the lock device according to the invention; and Figure 9 is a perspective view of a portion of the casing shown in Figure 8.
The lock device shown in Figures 1 to 7 comprises a U-shaped section 1 with a base 2 applied against a door leaf 3, so that one of its wings 4 is substantially co-planar with the face or vertical free edge 5 of said leaf. The two wings 4 and 6 are formed with opposite openings 41, 61; 42,62, etc., so that the horizontally moving bolts 71, 72, etc., the central portion of the body of which is housed inside section 1, may cross said branches 4 and 6.
The body of each bolt 7 is formed with an oblique slit 8 at 45" relative to the vertical, cooperating with a horizontal rod or pin 9 protruding from a vertical bar 10 housed in the bottom of the section. The bar 10 is vertically displaceable, viz. along its length, due to a lock mechanism 12 also housed inside the section 1 and formed with a key introduction barrel 13. The passage from the locked condition shown in Figure 1 to the unlocked condition is provided by operating a key introduced inside barrel 13 and by rotating it in the direction of arrow f. This rotation causes a downward translation (f2) of bar 10, and thereby a right hand side translation, that is in the direction of the door hinge, of the bolts 7, through the cooperation of rod 9 with the ramps formed by the lower faces of slits 8.
Such a locking device may be fitted without modification either on a door leaf the vertical free edge of which is on the left (Figure 1), or on a door leaf the vertical free edge of which is on the right (Figure 2). In fact, in the latter case, it is the branch 6 which is substantially co-planar with the edge 5a of the leaf and a rotation in the direction of arrow f, (Figure 2), contrary to arrow, brings the bolts from the locked condition (that is protruding) to the unlocked condition. This rotation in the direction of arrow f1 causes an upward translation (f3) of bar 10 and thereby a movement of the bolts to the left.
The catches are represented by a casing added to the door frame and extending over the height of the door. For clarity of the drawing, they have not been shown.
The mechanism 12 comprises, in addition to the locking lock with a barrel 13, a spring-bolt lock the operation of which, with a handle our a lever 15 turned towards the leaf hinge, brings a spring-bolt 16 to an unlocked condition, whereby the spring-bolt can extend through the branches 4 and 6 due to the openings in register 16a, formed in the latter.
The vertical side faces 17a, of a hood or casing 17' of mechanism 12 are formed each with an opening allowing the displacement of a spring-bolt on one side or the other, viz., as seen from the inside, towards the left (Figure 1) or towards the right (Figure 2).
The bolt 16 comprises, (Figures 4 to 6), on the one hand a bolt body 18 and, on the other hand, a bolt head 19 removably mounted on the body 18. To this effect, the latter is formed at one of its ends with fwo tapped holes 20 and 21 and, at its other end, with two other tapped holes 22 and 23 placed symmetrically to the first relative to a symmetry vertical axis 18a of body 18, and said tapped holes are provided for cooperation with head screws 20a and 21 a introduced into the corresponding holes of the bolt head 19.
The body 18 comprises a plate on which one may distinguish two portions 18 and 18c, the first of which 18b is of a rectangular shape and is formed with said openings 20, 21 and 22, 23 in the vicinity of its smaller sides, and the other 18c is square-shaped and protruding relative to the upper longer side of portion 18b and is formed with an opening 18d, also square-shaped, provided for cooperation with the cam 100 of the spring-bolt lock formed with the opening 101, of a square shape, and receiving the rod of same cross-section of the lever 15 (Figure 1). It is the rotation of said cam 100 about the horizontal axis 102 of opening 101 which allows controlling the horizontal displacement of the spring-bolt.
The spring-bolt lock comprises also two springs 103 and 104, one of which 103 acting on head 19 when it is in the condition shown in Figure 5, and the other 104 acting on said head when it is in the condition shown in Figure 6, said conditions corresponding respectively to a leaf with a free edge on the left and to a leaf with a free edge on the right.
Said springs 103 and 104 are placed symmetrically relative to the symmetry vertical axis 1 a of section 1.
Each of said springs, for instance the one referenced 103, is of the spiral type with an end fixed to a pin 105 of the spring-bolt lock casing and the body 106 of which is formed with a first branch 107 with its convexity turned towards the right, and a second branch 108 at the free end, the convexity of which is in the reverse direction, that is towards the left.
The spring 103 acts in the direction of arrow F1, whereas the spring 104, due to the symmetry, acts in the reverse direction.
In the condition shown in Figure 5, the branch 108 bears against the rear face 1 9a of the bolt head, whereas in the condition shown in Figure 6, it is the corresponding branch of spring 104 which is bearing against said face 19a.
The casing 17' housing in particular the spring-bolt lock is formed with two holes foreseen for the introduction of a holding rod 110. In the condition shown in Figure 5, the spring 104 bears against the rod 110 and is thereby maintained stationary and, in the condition shown in Figure 6, the rod 110 is in the other hole 110' for immobilizing spring 103.
For passing from the condition shown in Figures 1 to 5 to the condition shown in Figures 2 and 6, it is enough to accomplish the following operations : to separate head 19 from body 18 in order to place it at the other end of said body, to remove the rod 110 from the hole and to introduce it into the other hole, and to extract the lever 15 and put it back in place after having turned it over 180 .
As an alternative (not shown), instead of springs 103 and 104, there is foreseen a single spring of the helical type one end of which is fixed to the had 19 and the other end of which is immobilized along the axis 1a of the section.
The horizontal axis 161 of the spring-bolt 16 is equidistant from axis 102 of square 101 and from axis 13a of barrel 13 and the bolts 71,72,73 are arranged in a position symmetric to that of bolts 74, 75 and 76 relative to the same axis 161. In this way, it is possible to cover section 1 with a hood 25 (Figure 7) also formed by a U-shaped section with a base 26 and branches 27 and 28, but one only of said branches, 27, being formed with openings 271, 272, 273, 274, 275, 276 and 277 corresponding to openings 41 to 4, 6i to 66,16a and 16b in branches 4 and 6 of section 1 in order to provide a passage for bolts 7 and spring-bolt 16.The base 26 of hood 25 is formed with two other openings, respectively 30 and 31, which leave free on the one hand the end of the rod of lever 15 and, on the other hand, the barrel 13.
The width of hood 25, that is the distance between branches 27 and 28, is larger than that of section 1 so that, when the hood is in position, the branch 27 being for instance against branch 4, the device being in the condition shown in Figure 1, a gap is left outside section 1 between branches 6 and 7 for housing the rear end of the bolts when they are in the unlocked condition. Thus, the lock stems are never apparent.
The hood 25 being symmetrical relative to a horizontal plane 25a may also form a hood for casing 1 when said casing is in the condition shown in Figure 2, although one only of its branches is formed with openings for the passage of the bolts. In fact, it is enoughthturn said hood over 180"C, its lower portion begoming its upper portion, and vice versa, for passing from one condition to the other.
In the embodiment shown in Figures 8 and 9, the section 1 b of the lock device has also the general shape of a U in cross-section, with a base 2a and branches 4a and 6a, but the free ends of the branches are formed with edges turned towards the inside, respectively 40 and 41 and the hood 251 is, as hood 25, made of a U-shaped section with a base 26a and branches 27a and 28a, but the ends of branches 27a and 28a are formed with returns 42 and 43 housing the ends of branches 44 and 45 of another U-shaped section made of a flexible metal with a base 46 applied against the inner face 26b of base 26a of the rigid hood 251. To this base 46 are rigidly connected set-square shaped blades 47 provided from holes formed in said base 46, with a first branch 48 connected to the base 46 and an end branch 49 forming an angle with said branch 48. The blade 47 cooperates by a snap-in engagement with the edge 40 for maintaining hood 251 rigidly connected to section 1 b.
In order to provide the fixation of both sections, the branches 27a and 6a are also formed with openings in register, in addition to those foreseen for the passage of the bolts, and allowing the passage of screws 50.
Finally, the bottom of hood 251 is formed with an edge 51 protruding towards the outside of branch 27a. Said edge is continued, opposite branch 27a, by another branch 52 parallel to branch 27a. Said branch 52 forms a branch of a further U-shaped section with a bottom 53, the second branch of which 54, which is connected to the bottom 26a, being arranged so that the branch 27a be between branches 52 and 54.
The edge 51 constitutes an extra protection against house-breakings.
