Description
0262309813- DOOR AND DOOR LOCKING MECHANISM TECHNOLOGICAL FIELD The present disclosure relates to a door locking mechanism and a door comprising the door locking mechanism.
BACKGROUND Security doors often comprise one or more securing bolt configured to be selectively engaged to strengthen the door against impact. Typically, a single handle is provided which, when rotated in one direction, typically downwardly, releases a latch and facilitates opening the door from a closed position, and when rotated in the opposite direction engages the security bolts, thereby securing the door.
SUMMARY According to one aspect of the presently disclosed subject matter, there is provided a locking mechanism for a door, the locking mechanism configured to selectively facilitate retraction a latch of the door extending therefrom, the locking mechanism comprising: an actuation mechanism; a handle interface configured to receive a handle assembly and be rotated thereby about a handle axis; and at least one a bar having a proximal end articulated to the actuation mechanism and a distal end configured to activate an auxiliary locking arrangement; wherein in a first configuration of the locking mechanism, rotation of the handle interface about the handle axis in a first angular direction operates the actuation mechanism to translate the distal end of the bar in a first direction relative to the actuation mechanism thereby activating the auxiliary locking arrangement, and rotation of the handle interface in a second angular direction, opposite the first angular direction, facilitates retraction of the latch and operates the actuation mechanism to translate the 0262309813- distal end of the bar in a second direction, substantially opposite the first direction, relative to the actuation mechanism; and wherein in a second configuration of the locking mechanism, rotation of the handle interface about the handle axis in the second angular direction operates the actuation mechanism to translate the distal end of the bar in the first direction relative to the actuation mechanism thereby activating the auxiliary locking arrangement, and rotation of the handle interface in the first angular direction facilitates retraction of the latch and operates the actuation mechanism to translate the distal end of the bar in the second direction relative to the actuation mechanism. It will be appreciated that while rotation of the actuation mechanism is described, the presently disclosed subject matter may further include other types of movement which cause the bar to be suitably translated. The first direction may be a direction substantially away from the actuation mechanism, with the second direction being a direction substantially towards the actuation mechanism. The locking mechanism may further comprise a limiting arrangement configured to facilitate limiting an extent of rotation of the handle interface in the first and second angular directions from a neutral state of rotation of the actuation mechanism. In each of the configurations, the limiting arrangement may be configured to limit the extent of rotation of the handle interface in each of the first and second angular directions to a different extent from the neutral state. For example, the amount of rotation from the neutral state required to retract the latch may be less than the amount of rotation required from the neutral state in the opposite angular direction required to cause the bar to be fully translated in a direction away from the locking mechanism. The limiting arrangement may comprise at least one limiting element configured to limit the rotation of the handle interface. The limiting element may be a pin, a rivet, a bolt, a screw, a fastener, or any other suitable member capable of providing a limitation in the amount of rotation of the handle interface, for example, by providing a stop, resistance (such as a wound spring) or other interference which limits rotation, etc. The actuation mechanism may comprise an arcuate slot, the limiting element being configured to arrest the actuation mechanism when coming into contact with at least one of a first and a second end of the arcuate slot. 0262309813- The locking mechanism may comprise two apertures, each configured, when the limiting element is received therewithin, to dispose the limiting element at a location within the slot associated with one of the configurations of the locking mechanism. The actuation mechanism may selectively facilitate retraction of the latch towards the actuation mechanism against an urging force of an urging member. Each of the first and second configurations may be associated with the latch extending in an opposite directions than it is with the other of the configurations. The bar may be a first bar with the locking mechanism comprising a second bar having a proximal end articulated to the actuation mechanism at a distal end thereof. The distal ends of the first and second bars may be arranged to translate in different directions upon rotation of the handle interface. The actuation mechanism may comprises a cam arrangement, the bar (including the second bar, if provided) being pivotally connected at the proximal end thereof to a location on the cam arrangement, spaced from a center of rotation of the cam arrangement in a direction perpendicular to an axis of rotation of the cam arrangement. The actuation mechanism may further comprise a slider arranged to be urged in a first direction by an urging member, and arranged to be selectively slid against the urging of the urging member, or locked in an urged position, by contact of a cam surface of the cam arrangement with at least one portion of the slider, depending on the direction of rotation of the cam. The locking mechanism may be movable from the first configuration to the second configuration by rotation of the locking mechanism by 180° about an axis of rotation of the handle interface, and subsequent relative rotation of at least a part of the actuation mechanism by 180° about the axis of rotation of the handle interface. The locking mechanism may comprise a through-going aperture for receipt therethrough of the handle assembly in both of the configurations. The locking mechanism may further comprising the handle assembly. The first angular direction may be a clockwise direction with the second angular direction being a counterclockwise direction, or the first angular direction may be a counterclockwise direction with the second angular direction is a clockwise direction. The locking mechanism may further comprising the latch. 0262309813- According to another aspect of the presently disclosed subject matter, there is provided a door comprising a locking mechanism as described above. The may further comprise at least one auxiliary locking arrangement configured to be activated by one of the bars. The auxiliary locking arrangement may comprise a security bolt, and be configured to extend the security bolt when activated, and to retract it when not activated. The latch may be configured to be retracted, extended, or locked in an extended position depending on an extent of rotation of the handle interface. The door according may have first and second parallel spaced main side surfaces, the first main side surface having a greater surface area than the second main side surface, so as to protrude outwardly with respect to the second main side surface around at least a portion of the perimeter thereof, thereby providing a lip. Such a lip may be useful, e.g., to facilitate providing a seal against a door frame, such as with security or safety doors, such as for secure rooms which may be closed in a sealed manner. The door may be characterized such that, when viewed from the second main side surface: at least one hinge is provided along a left hand side of the door; rotation of the handle interface in the counterclockwise direction from the neutral state of rotation is arranged to retract a latch of the door; and rotation of the handle interface in the clockwise direction from the neutral state of rotation is arranged to lock a latch of the door in an extended position. The door may be characterized such that, when viewed from the second main side surface: at least one hinge is provided along a right hand side of the door; rotation of the handle interface in the clockwise direction from the neutral state of rotation is arranged to retract a latch of the door; and rotation of the handle interface in the counterclockwise direction from the neutral state of rotation is arranged to lock a latch of the door in an extended position. The locking mechanism may be enclosed within an outer casing of the door, wherein the door is capable of being rotated by 180° in a plane parallel to a main side 0262309813- surface of the door to selectively achieve the first and second configurations of the locking mechanism.
