SAMUEL T. MOOANLESS, OF GARTERSVILLE, GEORGIA.
BALlNG -PRESS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 357,400, dated February 8, 1887.
Application filed October 7, 1886. Serial No. 215,572. (No model.)
To aZZ whom it may concern:
- Be it known that" I, SAMUEL T. McCANLEss,
of Oartersville, in the county of Bartow and State of Georgia, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Baling-Presses; and I do hereby declare that the following "is a full, clear, and exact description of the same.
My invention is an improved device for compressing hay, cotton, and like substances; and the object of the invention is to embody the operating parts in a simple and economical mannenand to provide a machine having great power and capable of being operated by hand or suitable driving power without great expenditure of labor.
The invention therefore consists in certain devices and combination of devices whereby these objects are attained. V
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 shows the device in side elevation. Fig. 2 is a detail in section.
In these drawings, A is the sill, made of any suitable material, having secured to it suitable upright posts, P P,which support the frame of the machine. Thebox or frame 0, in which the rammer works, rests upon the sill, and is also attached to the upright posts 1? l? in any suitable manner. Integral with this look 0 and at one end thereof is the packing-box B, in which the material to be compressed is placed, and in which the rammer works. In the sides of this box B, and extending the whole length thereof, are cut slits a, through which, when the bale has been formed, binding material for the same may be passed. The box B is provided with a door, 0, through which the finished bale is removed, and said door, when secured in place, serves as one wall of the baling or compressing chamber. Thisbox B is also provided with a cover, D, to prevent the material from being forced out at the top. Pawls I), provided with a suitable number of teeth, are pivoted on the box at 0, and these teeth are adapted to engage with a bar, G, its ends passing through the central slit (6 and projecting out upon either side of the berg-said bar being placed in front of the follower-beam and being pushed along with it.
The follower mechanism consists of the beam H, supported by suspensionarms S S, said arms being attached at the top to the crossvond bale. of the bar G being placedin position after the pieces 6 e, which connect the tops of the upright posts, and pivotally secured to the beam H by loop-connections f. This means for supporting the beam H thus allows it to be swung back and forth. This beam is adapted to be moved either by suitable driving-power or by hand. In order to operate it by power, I pro-. vide a balance-wheel, K, to which power may be applied by a suitable driving-pulley. On the same shaft with this Wheel is a face-plate, L, on the circumference of which, in any relation to the center thereof, by the wrist-pin m, is secured the pitman M. The other end of this pitman is secured to the beam in any suitable way, and when the wheel is revolved the beam is swung back and forth. In order to operate the beam by hand, a suitable handle, N, is provided at the end of the beam. The pitman is disconnected from the beam, and the operator grasps the handle N and actuates the beam to and fro.
The operation of the device is as follows: The material to be compressed is fed in atthe top of the box, and the ram, being set-in motion, swings forward against the material to be compressed. Vhile the ram is being retracted for another blow, the bar G is inserted into place directly in front of the material undergoing compression, and the pawls b b, falling down upon the ends, hold it in position and prevent it from slipping back by reason of the elasticity of the hay, cotton, or other material. When sufficient quantity of material has been compressed to form the required bale, the ram is Withdrawn, andthe bar held against the material by the pawls, and keeps it compressed until it can be properly bound. The door is then opened, and the first-mentioned bale then acts as a back for another bale to be formed, and said bale first formed is forced out by the sec- It will be understood that instead ram has been forced forward, it may at first be placed directly in front of the ram and forced along with it, thus acting, when it is locked by the pawls b b, to prevent the elasticity of the material from forcing back the ram.
It will be understood that the posts supporting the beam H may be dispensed with, as the beam can just as well be attached between two trees, or else pivoted to the side of the barn.
I claim-- 1. The combination, in a hay or cotton press, of a compression-chamber and a ram suspended in rear of said chamber from suitable supporting-posts and adapted to enter the chamber in its forward movement to compress the material contained therein, substantially as described.
2. In a hay or cotton press, the combination of a compression-chamber, a bar adapted to be inserted in front of the rammer to hold the material in its compressed position, pawlsb b, for holding said bar in its advanced position,
and areciprocating ram suspended from suit-- able posts adapted to compress the material by intermittent strokes, substantially as described.
3. In a hayor cotton press, the combination ofa compression-chamber, a device for bold.
ing the material in its compressed position after it has been compressed by successive strokes of a reciprocating ram, and means for reciprocating said ram, consisting of the fly-wheel adapted to be actuated by suitable power, the face-plate on the same shaft therewith, and the pitman connected to said faceplate at one end and secured to the beam at the other end, whereby when the Wheel is rotated the pitman will throw the beam forward against the material and back, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
" SAMUEL T. MCCANLESS.
