we STYLING aAcK BACKGROUND OF THE INVENTION The present invention relates to an improved universal wig styling rack for mounting on practically all of the types of chairs which are normally used in beauty parlors.
by way of background, a wig as fabricated at the factory is not styled for any particular person but contains long straight hair. After the wig is purchased, the hair is styled by a hair stylist to meet the requirements of the purchaser. This styling includes the cutting of the hair to the correct length and thereafter setting the hair. In the past there were two waysof styling the wig. The first was to have the purchaser wear it dur ing the styling. This constituted an inconvenience to the hair stylist as well as to the customer. Another way of styling the wig was to mount it on a form which was secured to a tabletop or the like by means of a clamp. However, this causedthe wig to bell 1L3. unnatural position which prevented the stylist from working on the wig with the normal dexterity which she could utilize when working on a person who was sitting in a normal upright position in a chair. The unnatural work position not only affected the quality of the job but often caused backaches. In addition, since the wig was clamped in a fixed position on the table it had to be remounted frequently during the styling operation so as to pennit the proper styling from various angles. It is with overcoming the foregoing deficiencies of the prior art that the present invention is concerned.
SUMMARY OF THE INVENTION It is accordingly the primary'object of the present invention to provide an improved wig styling attachment which can. be mounted on a swivel chair of the type nonnally usedin beauty parlors and which will position a wig in the same position as the head of a person sitting in the chair, thereby permittinga hair stylist to work on the wig in the same manner as she would work on a person sitting in the chair.
Another object of the present invention is to provide an improved wig styling attachment which is universally adjustable so that it canbe mounted on practically any type of chair used in a beauty parlor as long as the chair has arms, a seat and a back.
A further object of the present invention is to provide an improved wig styling attachment which islightweight so that it can be handled with ease and which is relatively simple in construction and easy to operate so that it can be used conveniently.
A still further object of the present invention is to provide an improved wig styling attachment whichcan be moved from chair to chair while. a wig is mounted thereon so as to permit a wig to be moved to a chair under a dryer after the styling has been completed without actually touching the wig itself and thereby obviating the necessity to handle the wig and remount it on a wig form after it has been styled. Other objects and at tendant advantages of the present invention will readily be perceived hereafter.
The improved wig styling attachmentof the present invention includes a central body portion, a frame member attached to and extending upwardly from said central body portion for mounting a head form on which a wig is placed, first means secured relative to said central body portion for preventing pivotal movement of said frame member in a first direction, and second means secured relative to the central body portion for preventing pivotal movement of said frame member in a second clirectionwhich is opposite to said first direction. to thereby hold said attachment in position on said chair against movement when e-xternal forces are applied to said head form incidental to the styling of a wig thereon. In its more specific aspects, the present invention includes arms extending laterally from the central body portion for resting on the spaced arms of a chair, a downwardly depending leg extending from said central body portion for resting, on the seat of said chair, and a rearwardly extending arm attached to said central body portion for resting against the back of the chair. The attachment is placed in position in the chair by merely resting it on the anns of the chair and adjusting the leg to rest firmly on the seat. This adjustment is effected by the loosening and tightening of a simple wing nut. In this manner the attachment can be mounted and removed from a chair in an extremely simple and expedient manner. The various aspects of the present invention will be more fully understood when the following portions of the specification are read in conjunction with the accompanying drawing wherein:
BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF THE DRAWING FIG. I is a side elevational view of the improved wig styling attachment positioned relative to a chair on which it is mounted;
FIG. 2 is a front elevational view of the wig styling attachment of FIG. I; and
FIG. 3 is a plan view taken substantially in the direction of arrows 3-3 of FIG. 2.
DESCRIPTION OF THE PREFERRED EMBODIMENT The improved wig styling attachment 10 includes a central body portion II which is essentially an angle member having a vertical leg 12 and a horizontal leg 13. The ends 14 of vertical leg 12 are cut at an angle so as not to dig into the arms 15 of chair 16. A pairof arms 17 extend laterally from central body portion 11. Each arm 17 has a slot I8 therein which receives the shank of bolt 19, the head of which bears on the underside of horizontal leg 13. A wing nut 20 tightens each arm 17 in any desired adjusted position. The outer ends of arm 17 are formed into vertical flanges 21 which bear against the outer sides 22 of thechair anns 15 after arms 17 have been adjusted. Padding 23 is interposed between the chair arms and the portions of lateral arm 17 in contact therewith, padding 23 being secured by pressure sensitive adhesive or the like to the undersides of arms 17 and the-inside of flanges 21. The padding 23, which may be of a suitable foam material or felt prevents slipping as well as preventing marring; The connection consisting of bolt 19 and slot 18 associated with arms I7 permits the arms 17 to be pivoted about the axes of bolts I9, to thereby cause flanges 21 to lie squarely against the outer sides of the chair.
In order to prevent rotation of central body portion II in a clockwise direction in FIG. I about the longitudinal axis of said central body portion, a leg 24 is adjustably attached to vertical leg 12 of central body portion II by means of bolt 25 extending through slot 26. A wing nut 27secures leg 24 in any desired adjusted position after foot or flange 28 has been moved downwardly into engagement with seat 29 of the chair. Suitable padding 30, which may be the same material as padding 23, prevents foot 28 from slipping. It will be appreciated that leg 24 prevents the clockwise tilting of bracket 10 in the event a force is applied from left to right on wig head 31.
In order to prevent counterclockwise rotation of central body portion 11 in FIG. I, a rearwardly extending arm 32-is attached to central body portion 11 by means of bolts 33. A flange 34 extends upwardly from arm .32 and bears against the back 16' of the.chair I6. Suitable padding 35, which may be foam material or rubber, is cemented to flange 3A and prevents marring of the back of the chair as well as providing nonslipping frictional engagement therewith.
The wig head or form31 on which the wig is mounted is in the shape of a human head and includes a central vertical aperture, not'shown, which receives the end. of mandrel 36 which extends upwardly from C-clamp 37 which is attached to inverted U-shaped frame member 38 having flanges 39 at the lower end of legs 40, said flanges 39 being attached to horizontal leg 13 of central bodymember II by means of bolts ii. The C-clamp 37 is attached to base 42 which extends between legs40 and can be removed from said base 42. if required. The wig head or form 31 and the. C-clamp 37 are conventional items which are normally found in beauty shops and therefore the improved wig styling rack of the present invention can be furnished to beauty shops without C-clamp 37 and wig head 31.
The members 11, 17, 24 and 32 are fabricated from suitable lightweight aluminum, or the like.
it can readily be seen that the improved wig styling rack of the present invention can be positioned on any type of beauty parlor chair having arms, a seat and a back. Once this rack has been adjusted for any size of chair, it need not be readjusted but may merely be placed in position by moving the entire rack as adjusted downwardly so that its lateral arms 17 rest on the arms of the chair. The foot 28 will automatically then be in a position on the seat of the chair and the flange 34 will rest against the back of the chair. During the wig styling operation the stylist stands behind the chair in the normal position which she would occupy when working on a live customer. As required, she may raise andlower the chair or may swivel the chair in order to obtain the best vantage point for effecting the styling. The operator will thus be able to work most efficiently and not be forced to assume awkward positions which would otherwise be required if she were working on a wig form attached to a bench or table.
After the styling has been completed, the entire rack 10 may be lifted off of the chair and be placed onto a chair situated underneath a dryer for final drying. There need be no handling of the wig during this process and therefore once it has been properly set it remains set until it is finally dried. During the time that the stylist is working on the wig, the wig styling rack 10 cannot move from side to side on the chair because flanges 21 of arms 17 bear against the sides of the chair, and furthermore it cannot tilt forwardly or rearwardly because of leg 24 and arm 32. The bearing of flanges 21 against the sides of the chair provides stabilization in addition to that provided by the above structure. Thus the present invention provides an extremely stable wig styling rack which may be conveniently placed on chairs of different dimensions which are normally found in beauty parlors.
While the present invention has been described with respect to wigs, it will be appreciated that it has equal applicability. to hairpieces worn by men and can-be used as an attachment to a barber chair or any other type of chair which has arms.
