SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 357,254, dated February 8, 1887.
Application filed November .24, 1886. Serial No. 219,800. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be, it known that I, GnoRc-E IRVING WAUGHTAL, a citizen of the United States,

In the drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective view of a harrow embodying my improvements. Fig. 2 is a detail sectional view of the same, taken on the line 00 00 of Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a detailed horizontal sectional view taken on the liney yof Fig. 2. Fig. 4 is a similar view taken on the line a z of Fig. 3. Fig. 5 is aperspective view of my improved harrow when formed of a limited number of sections. Fig. 6 is a detail of the front coupling of the harrow-sections. Fig. 7 is a detail view of the rear coupling.
A represents a series of harrow-sections, each of which comprisesa pair of bars, B and G,'which are rigidly secured together at an angle of about seventy degrees.
D represents a series of clamp-plates,which are bent at an angle corresponding to thatof the sections A, and the said plates are bolted to the inner sides of the said sections at the elbows formed at the meeting ends of the bars angle-plates D are provided with right-angled outwardly-extending flanges E, which bear strap, F, thefront end of which is provided with a transverse eye, G.

By this construction it will be readily understood that each harrow-section is flexibly connected to the evener or draft-bar, so that the said harrowsections are free to move laterally, and also vertically, independent of each other. The
barrow-sections are provided with the usual barrow-teeth, P, which extend through vertical openings that are made in the barsB and C.
To the rear end of each harrow-section, on the outer side thereof, is bolted a metallic strap, R. The said straps have their rear ends projecting beyond the rear ends of the harrowsections,'-and are provided with the reduced necks S and the heads T. The front end of each strap R, on one side thereof, and at its upper and lower edges, is provided with a pair of laterally-extending lugs or ears, U. Bolts V 'pass through vertical central openings which are made in the said ears.
\V represents a series of connecting-rods, which are each provided at one end with an eye, TV, and at the opposite end with a loop, V Each of the said connecting-rods has its eye'WV pivoted on the bolt V of one of the straps R, and the link XV engages the neck S of the strap R of the adjacent barrow-section.
The heads T prevent the loops WV from becoining disengaged from the necks S. It will be observed that a considerable space is left between each pair of ears U and the eye \V of the connecting-rod, so that the latter is free to play vertically between the said ears, and that owing to the loops W the rear end of each harro w-section is free to vibrate laterally on the connecting-rod, and thereby the independ ent movements of the barrow-section before mentioned are not impaired by having their rear ends connected together by the rods "W.
Owing to the angles at which the harrow sections or bars are bent, the latter are maintained in a horizontal position on the ground, .with the points of their teeth engaging the soil. The operation of my invention is as follows: When the harrow is drawn across a'field, its independently-movable sections conform to the inequalities of the ground, and thereby all tinue at work.
Having thus described my invention, I claim- 1. In a barrow, the combination of the draftbar or evcner and the barrow-sections, each formed of a single bar bent at a suitable angle and provided with harrow-teeth, the said harrowsections being" flexibly connected together, and each flexibly connected to the draft-bar or evener, substantially as described.
2. The combination of the draftbar or cvener, the links H, swiveled to the same, and the harrow-sections pivoted separately to the rear ends of the said links, the rear ends of the said harrow-sections being flexibly connected together, substantially as described.
3. The combination of the draftbar or evener, the bolts L, attached thereto and free to turn therein, the said bolts being provided with the eyes N, the links H, having their front ends pivoted to the eyes of the bolts, and the independent harrow sections having their front ends pivoted to the rear ends of the links H, substantially as described.
4. In a flexible sectional barrow, the combination of the harrowsections A, having their front ends flexibly connected together, the rear ends of the said sections being provided with the ears U and the projecting heads T, and the rods W, having their inner ends pivoted on bolts between the ears U and free to play vertically thereon, the outer ends of the said rods W having the loops Vi, to engage the heads of the adjacent barrow-sections, for the purpose set forth, substantially as described.
5. In combination with the draft bar or evener, the harrow sections independently pivoted thereto, each barrow-section having at their outer ends rods \V,provided with loops IV, and the straps R, having heads T and the neck S, as set forth.
(5. In combination with the draftbar or evencr, the harrow sections independently pivoted thereto at their front ends, and rods \V, pivoted to one section and coupled to the adjacent section, said rods having a vertical movement, theharrow-seetions being adapted to slide laterally for a limited distance independently of the rods.
