CULTIVATO R.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 290,440, dated December 18, 1883. Application filed August 29, 1883. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, GEORGE WV. LILLY and JAMES E. NORMAN, both of Centre, Rails county, Missouri, have invented anew and useful Improvement in Cultivators, of which Elie following is a full, clear, and exact descripion.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures.
Figure 1 is aplan view of our improvement. Fig. 2 is a sectional side elevation of the same, taken through the line 00 :0, Fig. '1. Fig. 3 is a sectional front elevation of a part of the same, taken through the line 3 y, Fig. 2.
The object of this invention is to keep the plows of each part of the cultivator-frame at the same distance apart laterally, and at the same angle with the line of draft, whatever lateral movement may be given to the said part of the frame in guiding the plows.
A represents the wheels, and B the axle, of the cultivator. The middle part of the axle B is arched to pass over tall plants without injuring them.
Upon the horizontal end parts of the axle B, at the inner sides of the wheels A, are placed long couplings O, which may be formed of plates bent into tubular form, and having their edges bent outward parallel with each other, forming flanges.
To and between the end parts of the flanges of the couplings O are hinged byboltsD the ends of pairs of beams E. Any desired construction of coupling can be used, provided it is such as to have two hinging-points at a little distance apart to receivethe ends of two beams E. The beams E extend back parallel with each other, and are pivoted at their rear parts by bolts F to a crossbar, G, placed parallel with the coupling 0. The ends of the crossbar G are attached to or formed upon the standards H, which are formed in one piece, bent into U form, with arms of unequal length, and having its ends curved downward to receive the plows I. With this construction the standards of each pair are rigidly connected,
so that they will always have the same relative position, however they may be adjusted. The standards H of each pair are still further connected by a curved brace, J, the ends of of the handles K are attached to the upper ends of the brace-bars L, the lower ends of which are secured to the rear ends of the inner beams E, so that the ,plows' can be readily guided by the said, handles K. With this construction, as the beams E are moved laterally in guiding the plows, the. cross-bars G will be always parallel with the couplings C and axle B, so that the plows I will stand at the same angle with the line of draft, whether they are set to throw the soil inward or outward, or in both directions.
We do not abandon or dedicate to the public any patentable features set forth herein and not hereinafter claimed, but reserve the right to claim the same either in a reissue of any patent that may be granted upon this application or in other applications for Letters Patent that we may make.
Having thus described our invention, we claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- 1. The combination, with the single-piece standards H H, of the curved brace J, attached at each end to a standard at or near the beginning of the downward bend, as shown and described.
2. The combination, with the plow beams and standards, of the cross-bar G, forming a rigid connection with and between the standards, and carrying the pivots F, on which the beams turn, as shown and described.
GEORGE WV. LILLY. JAMES E. NORMAN.
